  1. I decided to build some cabinets in the garage, it's time to get alittle more organized! under the cabinets I plan on building a bench with a built in miter saw and router table. this has already given me ALOT more room! 3/4 inch plywood. total length of the cabinet is 8 foot, 15 inches deep and 30 inches tall. one fixed shelf in the middle.
  2. well here is it all together....... here is a close of the only visible breaks. The other's broke right at the glue spot so you don't notice them. the breaks on the top ring are totally hidden. I was pretty discouraged when it broke but now that it's all fixed i'm happy again.
  3. well it's all back together, after I got home from work today I sanded it down and re did the finish now it's drying. looks good as new. I can only see 3 of the breaks so it's not too bad. I guess I better learn to be more careful it's a great project though. I think one of my favorites
  4. I sanded and sanded till it was perfect, then started putting tung oil on it, and then it happened, it slipped out of my hand and hit the floor! Man was I mad!! but I've glued it all back together and after some sanding tomorrow I don't think you'll ever be able to tell where it was broke. Luckily the breaks were clean.
  5. Welcome!
  6. Thanks I'll check it out!
  7. I resized the pattern to make it bigger. It's fairly easy to cut hard part was the assembly. I cut a couple notches slightly too big and since the parts are curved you can't clamp it I had to hold them
  8. Not finished, still needs to be sanded and the top ring glued on (it's just laying there) but i liked it so much i wanted to share. I plan on finishing it with a salad bowl oil. the top ring is 11.5 inches across. This is going to be the gift I give to my local cabinet shop for allowing me to come in and get free wood all the time. I'm going to fill it with fruit and deliver it hopefully next week to say thank you. I visited them last week and asked what they did with scrap hard wood, they throw it all away, he said i could take it all if I wanted. so once a week I'm going over there and digging through thier trash cans. this is made out of all the wood scraps they have given me. many different types of wood, 4 I think. the top ring is 8 pieces of red oad edge glued together and then planed down to 1/2 inch thick. this is a modified Steve Good pattern, I made it once and it was too easily tipped over, so i made the base as wide as the top for more staiblity. Trivet, 3/4 inch thick not sure what wood it is, it was in the pile of scraps I picked up from the cabinet makers. another trivet (about 8 inches long)
  9. the blue background makes the wood pop out...definetly the second one.
  10. They look great, looks like something you bought in a store.
  11. Where did you get the pattern from? Got a link?
  12. Showed this to my wife last night and I think she fell in love great job
  13. that looks great, love the detail in the face of it
  14. I like it!
  15. I'm really liking the 3D butterfly it's looks awesome and was really easy to make
  16. looks great, I'm sure she will love it!
  17. something I didn't mention but I wanted to point out.....on the hinges there are 2 white little dots, the way I took the pics you can just barely see them. they are bamboo skewers (the ones you cook with), I didn't think that just glueing the hinges to the board would be strong enough so i drilled 2 1/8 inch holes into each hinge and used the skewers to reinforce the hinge to the box and the lid. the ones on the back go all the way through the box and the hinge, (if you look closely at the pic with the lid open you can see the two white dots on the inside of the back board) the ones on the lid go through the hinge and into the lid and stop about 1/16 of an inch from the top surface (they wouldn't have looked good going all the way through i didn't think). just thought i'd add that Thanks for all the great comments, The guy I made if for is comeing over to get it in a little bit, going to be a valentines day gift for his girlfriend. p.s. just curious about your thoughts on this, what would you think something like this could/should sell for? it's 10 inches long x 6 inches wide x 3.5 inches deep. I'm asking $80 for each of the ones i've sold so far. (I've posted pics of each of them) I was thinking of charging $100 from now on. thanks in advance for your opinions
  18. Red oak for the base and hinges, white oak for the sides and top (a tree cut down from a friends yard that was too close to powerlines), the inlay cats are walnut (another tree cut down from the same friends yard this one was being eaten by carpenter ants) The letters I don't have a clue, it was a piece of dark wood I had in the garage.
  19. the polymer clay is VERY easy to work with. I got some from walmart (multicolor pack with tools) for $5 it's very soft and easy to mold. I got some more from hobby lobby, and it wasn't nearly as soft and easy to work with. says it's the same stuff just different manufacturer and costs more money. the walmart brand stuff only comes with multicolor packs, you can't get single color packs, that's why I went to hobby lobby. but the walmart stuff was much cheaper. you just squeeze the clay into the cut out, bake it for 15 minutes at 275 degrees and then let it cool, as it cools it gets hard, once hard you just sand it smooth. that's it!
  20. Another new box complete. made some wood hinges for this one, I was going to put cat inlays in them but one broke so I used polymer clay instead of redoing the entire hinge. Here is a close up of the cats inlay. I used the idea of using saw dust and wood glue to fill in the holes and it worked great! the arrow on the left is the entry hole, can't even see it! the right cat had a gap along the bottom (not sure why) and it filled in perfectly can't even see that it was ever there. I did the same for the letters too, you can still see the entry holes but not nearly as much as before. from now on I'm going to make the entry hole on the inside of the cut instead of on the line and then use sawdust and glue to fill it.
  21. Great looking box!
  22. Looks great, I've still gotta try this. Got any pics of how you enclosed the dust Chamber?
  23. That sounds like a great find, I'll go check it out
  24. Those look great. Even better than the pattern. Good luck at the show, I imagine there's great potential at one of those
