welcome. my advice on getting started is Blades. They are the most important thing to achieve good results. Flying dutchmen , Olson are a couple of brands that are highly used here. Wooden Teddy Bear sells both too. Start with basic patterns, as you have probably already learned, don't jump into the deep water until you know you an swim. trying to start our with small, numerous fret work will most likely discourage you..go for the basics and then push the envelope as you go. There are a lot of different kinds of wood out there but baltic Birch is very forgiving and not all that expensive. One source for that is Sloans. A family owned business and they are honest good people running it. Patience is important and you already noted that you have that. I am afraid that Amazing Kevin is right about the light but you will soon see if it is helpful to you. Check out the 'University secton' on the forum and you will learn a lot.. It was some of your friends FREE patterns that I have cut and admired. I am always happy to see what others have to offer. As I check out your work and see the signature on some of the patterns you have cut, I am thinking that is must be your patterns, and if so, I have cut several of your patterns and if this s all true, then you are one of my favorite pattern makers, because you patterns are nice to cut and not filled with a lot of unneeded things that just get in the way for me.. The person that ordered the Indian Warrior and the Running clock and the running cross also ordered this Fishing Cross to give for Christmas, to her family members. This was another that I was not too sure of my skill level to get through. I was able to get it cut without any breaks so I was happy about that Dick heppnerguy

Here is another request for a Christmas gift. The pattern is by Sue Meyer and I was a little concerned with a couple of places that looked like they might be a little challenging but everything worked out fine. She received it and was happy as could be, so that makes it really worth while. Dick heppnerguy

I was going to be gifted by a visit from my super busy granddaughter and I wanted to give her a little gift as she really likes the scrolling and intarsia pieces and has quite a few of my pieces. So this is what I made for her this time. Dick heppnerguy

Jim, I, personally am not into super heroes but I have to admit that these plaques would definately catch my eye at the show. I would HAVE. To make a remark about how I liked them and would be sure to point them outto my wife as we stood in front of your booth. If I had someone in the family that was into super heroes I would not have hesitated to purchase at least one of them and probably get your contact information Fromm you for further purchases. I have tried some colorization on a couple of my pieces but only I liked them. What medium did you use to colorized these? You did a very nice job with them but, not only in the painting but also the cutting. Dick heppnerguy

That looks like a good drying system you have here. Takes up a small area while servicing a large a mount of cutting. Nice idea Dick heppnerguy

I have found that using a little larger blade it will track better. I agree with Roly on that. Also I have found that using a double tooth blade helps too because it is also way less aggressive and much easier to control. Also if you are getting into fret work, forgery the painters tape and put the pattern directly on the wood with spray glue and when you are finished cutting all you need to do is cover the pattern with some mineral spirits or paint thinner and wait about 15 seconds and the pattern will just fall off. That is what I do and it works great for me. I just finished cutting 2 pieces of fret work on 1/8 inch BB ply and I used no added wood and I had no problem with either of them. Take your time and let the blade do the cutting, don't hesitate to change the blade if The going does not go easily and you find you are having to push a little more than you did at the beginning. I had a really nice magnifier with a fluorescent light. It was an older one and had a weight that kept it where ever you put it. I found for me, that I just did not like the magnifier. It was nice and clear but i did not like having it between me an my work, so I gave it back to my daughter, saying if I ever do decide I need it, perhaps I will ask if you still have it. Who knows Dick heppnerguy

Welcome aboard. I am happy to hear that you are not only interested in scrolling but also in chatting. This group is so much fun to hang out with that before long you will probably fin it difficult to get to your now normal web sights because the people here always have so many things to say and show and it is also about the most giving and helpful place on Earth.
