Sam, We are all happy that you found us and decided we were at a place that interested you enough to join us. I am afraid that if I ware a perfectionist I would have a waste can full of my cuttings. I do the best I can without stressing over every little thing. Keep me kind of sane. I enjoy scrolling probably more than anything I have ever done and so glad that I decided to see if I could even do it. Stick around and ask any questions you may have. Jim, Welcome to our large and friendly family of global scrollers. My suggestion to you would be to not try to do very complicated patterns in the beginning. Just have fun and then you won't get discouraged with it. It is a fun and interesting hobby that I too took up after I retired and I will continue to cut as long as I am able. Log on often and make comments on other posts as well as make posts of your own. Show us your work, we love to see what others are up to. There are a lot of very talented people here and so much scroll saw knowledge that one might think it was invented here. Then there are the ever learning and sometimes. struggling ones, in which category I am in.We all learn and get encouraged by one another. As most of you know by now, I am not a craft show person because I really am not into scrolling to make money. I do wish to take in about $150 a month so my hobby is self supporting. I have my Facebook page and occasionally i put something on our local classifieds, also on Facebook. I do have my 'regulars' who fill most of my income needs, Every now and then I give things away and they often end up bringing me some sales. I try to keep a low key this time of the year because I am so busy with family Christmas presents, This month, so far I have done $450 in November. So I am good thru the end of the year and no making things I don't have a place and person for. That means I am able to enjoy cutting without regards to transporting things in hopes of maybe selling.. Everyone has Their way to make the crafts work for them, this just happens to be mine, I love seeing the photos of peoples booths at the craft sales and i enjoy going to them too. My saw started rattling like crazy, a couple of weeks ago. I have been using it for more then 10 years and it has been a great saw. It his was my DeWalt 788. I also have a Hawk but I like using my DeWalt way better. Anyway I went on line and found a new one for under $400 so I bought it and it was delivered, free freight in three days to my door. I am happy again and will some day buy bearings and rebuild my other saw too. I pays to look around for them on line. Never know when a deal will pop up. My first one I found on line for $349 delivered. So there you go Dick heppnerguy

I also use Inkscape and learned from the tutorial post that Travis made in the university part of the forum, I believe. If you practice making about thereof them, after you understand the procedure , you should be about to make a new patterns about 4 or 5 minutes, max Dick heppnerguy

We have a small town about twenty miles from where we live and they have a volleyball team that won their district championship and were headed for a chance to win the state title. I designed a plaque that announced their winning state, should it actually happen. I was charging $25 per plaque. It turns out the team lost in the first round for the state championship, but four years ago they won state title as well as they also did not lose a single game all season. A woman text me and ask if I could make a couple of these plaques I was offering but with 2011 on them, instead. Of course I did that for her. Today she came a To our house and picked them up. I had never met this woman before today. The exciting pRt was before she left she was looking at some of my work on our home walls and when she saw the eagle I handmade for my wife last year, she said," I have to have one of these for a Christmas present. I told her it was my most expensive piece that I currently sell and told her my prose is $200. (Which is true' of course). Without batting an eye, she said, "perfect, call me when you have it finished" Dick heppnerguy

I had a request from a friend to make this patter of Sue Meye's. I toldherthat it was above my skill level and to choose something else. She said this is what I want andirons you can cut it. I trust your skill. Well since she would not give in, I purchased the pattern and cut it today. The thing that is so new tome is that I knew the best waytocutthis one was going to be able tout this one was info used that dreaded spiral blade. All my previous effort with the spiral were not very pretty but I thought if I was going to accomplish this one I needed to buck up and just go for it. Well as you can see, I was able to get it cut. I actually got to a point where I was starting to enjoy the spiral blade some. I doubt it will everbemyblade ofchoicebutwhen I run across a pattern of this type again, at least I know that I can do it Dick heppnerguy

i guess you got the message about using contrasting colors for piece and background.. it is a very nice pattern and you executed it well. I would have used a thinner wood and a contrasting background but I am not sure I could have cut it as well as you did .. Dick heppnerguy

We had a Japanese teacher stay with us for a few weeks, one summer. He had brought a group of school girls with him and they were housed in our community. at the end of the stay, the kids put on a little show for those who housed them and one thing they did was to paint with the brushes, I think you are talking about and each got their name in Japanese done with the brush.. An interesting time was had by all. Makes me wonder if you too are Japanese or how it is that you got interested in this art. Dick heppnerguy

Everyone seems to have a personal blade preference. I have been going to the double tooth/ reversible blade because I have been doing some intricate and small fret cuts and these blades are a little slow cutting do to the smaller teeth on the blade hence a little easier to control. If I am not doing small fret cuts I go to a more aggressive blade. Some only use the spiral blades and do very well with them , but those who do. to use the spiral on a regular basis, usually don't. Like them at all. So in short, you have to experiment with a variety blades on a variety of woods and over time you will find the 'right blade' for you. Good luck in your search and when it happens you will be very aware of YOUR favorite blades Dick heppnerguy

Hi Dennis, I am unfamiliar with your saw, personally but it is easy to see you are doing a fine job with your scrolling. Exactly is happening when you have what you are calling blade wobbling? Not really understanding what you are saying let give you a couple of things to explore, even though this is coming from the blind side. One thing that could be causing this problem is not enough tension on your blade. Sometimes as one is sawing the tension can lessen due to the blade slipping in the hold down screws. If you are having this problem you might want to lightly sand your blades before you install them . This will remove the oil on them that is there so they will not rust. This will also make the blade surface rough to help it hold better Another possibility can be that you are using you're blades too long. Some people try to make their blades last as long as possible and this can cause them to wonder when sawing. My third guess might be that you are using too small of a blade. When doing that, the blade can not stay on track because it does not have the ability or strength to keep up with the sawing demands put on it. If this is the case try a larger blade instead. If you find that a larger blade Is too aggressive, you might try a double tooth blade because they follow well, can give you better control as then are quite a bit less aggressive while having more rigidity. I may be way off on your problem but I took a stab at it anyway. If it does not help you it might give someone else a clue on a problem they are having. Dick heppnerguy

It looks like you just need to cut the bottle open at the bottom. After you have removed the bottle bottom all you need to do is place the candle on the deck of the hanger, light it and place the remainder part of the bottle over it Dick heppnerguy
