  1. Hi All, Finished cutting this Fiona Kingdon pattern and while cutting the outside it cracked. Must have been some internal stress that finally eased. I think the crack is pretty obvious towards the top right of piece but I don't feel like gluing and clamping as I know it is cracked. I think I will leave as is and make another. Thanks for looking Don W PS I may orientate the grain direction next time and run the grain across the piece.
  2. I think you may find a bit of a problem using the instructions as the Gimp version you have will not be the same as the version Travis uses in the lessons. May not be too bad though give it a try. Don W
  3. Great work. She is bound to love it. Don W
  4. +1 for the advice given by Brenda (Foxfold) Don W PS You can make the lines any colour you like. I use red as it gives a good contrast but green or blue are pretty good. PPS @ Brenda, I don't think it is a cheat.
  5. Glad that healed up well Brenda. I am seriously questioning whether I need superglue ?? take care Don W
  6. I scan the sheet in the local library and then use the scissors
  7. Very nicely done.
  8. A quick visit to the 'Shed' today and there is one chap attempting the electronic clock (doing well with it), I have attached 2 pics
  9. Thanks for that Steve, I will check with my joiner friend and see if he can get a quote. Don W
  10. Ray, it was the cheapest quote and this was the result. We have been quoted a new set of prices from our joiner (who gets the trade price) and will be ordering next week. The new ply is guaranteed BB/B (whatever?), it will have a flawless front face and may have some butterflies in the other face. We may need to order a couple of sheets of the 6mm as the scroll saw group and the Pyrography group would like to use it.
  11. @octoolguy, Hi Ray, glad you got that to open, I posted here as a .dxf and I have a .dwg file that I am trying to open with the Librecad (when I figure how that works). Can you print out the pattern at the right size for cutting ?? It is a simple 2 gears attached to a piece of wood and if sized and cut correctly is a very pleasing project.Good luck with it. We are trying the Genesis clock from the book and have cut a couple of gears from ply, The ply was NOT Baltic Birch plywood and it shows in the finished gears, this is why we are determined to get the correct plywood. I will attach a couple of pics. @Rockytime, Hi Les, I normally use/d DraftSight but they are no longer supporting the free version after the end of December 2019. I have downloaded and installed LibreCad and I am trying to use it for my CAD drawings. It's not much different but at 80 years of age it is another challenge along the way. LOL @Scrappile, Hi Paul, Your clock is looking very good. I believe you are allowed cosmetic changes, faces, hands etc. and these can be quite personal, it is the actual gear sizes and pitches between them that need to be quite accurate to get the clock to run. You have made a very good start with the Ascent and Jeff has a really good business going with the full range of goodies from bare drawings up to the full laser cut ready to assemble kits. Clayton Boyer on the other you site mention has a clock in the book we are using and it is the Genesis, the clock we have picked to build. take care Don W
  12. Hi All, I had to start a new thread as I was using too much of the thread where this started. I have found a sample to be cut to test if you would like to try wooden gear clock making. It can be found on the Brian Law site at www.woodenclocks.co.uk and is an ideal way to find if you have the patience/aptitude and skills you will need. I will try and post it here but it might not work. take care Don W sample_1.dxf
  13. I think we all feel much the same and treat the forum as a discussion. I will start a new topic as I have something to show.
  14. A new thread would be good but it could be better to join the forum at scrollsawer.com and ask any questions on that site, unless Travis would like to open a 'Clocks' forum here. @Ray, I have looked for the design I downloaded and I have it as a .dwg and .dxf . I use/d Draftsight for my CAD drawings but they have just announced the end of the FREE programme as from the end of December 2019. I have downloaded and installed LibreCad (I use Linux OS and it is FREE (Very important to this Scotsman)) and I am trying to get to grips with it. I think I got the simple little pattern from the clockmakers website and it was free ( along with 4 or 5 FREE clock plans and instructions on how to print them out in PDF). Have a look at www.woodenclocks.co.uk this is the site for Brian Law and I think it is great.
  15. @Ray, I have visited the 'Shed' today and tried to gather a few facts about the wooden gear clocks we want to make. Firstly the book we are using is "Making Wooden Gear Clocks" by the editors of 'Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts' Magazine that we purchased from Amazon. The clock we are concentrating on is the 'Genesis Wooden Gear Clock'. We have cut a couple of the gears to see what it was like as a project and I think it will be quite good, I am at the moment trying to burn the numbers on the wheels we have cut, I hope to do that using the Laser Engraver. I have attached a pic of the book, (I believe the pic on the front of the book is the Genesis), a pic of the 3 gears cut so far and ready to have the numbers burnt on and lastly a gratuitous pic of the nativity that was being finished this morning (Steve Good pattern I think). There is a pattern somewhere that you can cut to determine if you would like to do wooden gear clocks. I will have a look and post here when I find it. take care Don W
  16. @decker7, I would expect to get 16 x (600 x 300) sheets from a standard 2440 x 1220 sheet. At £47.50 for 25 sheets that would seem to be a bargain compared to my 16 sheets for £41. If delivery is free up here it will be worthwhile. I will check out trustleaf immediately.
  17. @Ray, Will check when I get back to the shed tomorrow (Tuesday) but I think the book was bought from Amazon. We did start with a simple gear meshing example and I will have a look for that later when I have had my medication. Don W
  18. Very well done Brenda. Looks pretty cute.
  19. @octoolguy, Hi Ray I can take pictures as we go along. We have a book and will need to pick out the one we want to make first. Getting this wood is imperative to our project.
  20. I received a quote last week from the local wood merchant and his prices were for genuine Baltic Birch Ply 2440 x 1220 x 6mm £41 2440 x 1220 x 9mm £41.30 2440 x 1220 12mm £54 These prices are Ex. VAT. I don't know the vat rate, around 20% I think. I asked for a quote as our scroll saw group in the 'Mens Shed' as going to have a go at making wooden geared clocks and it needs the best of wood.
  21. She will certainly love that one. Very well done.
  22. Very well done.
  23. @JohnB, I'm with you on that. Sometimes 1/16" is big and the smaller (micro) bits are used but sometimes a pattern comes up that needs a few very, very fine cuts (like the one I am doing at present) and then I use the smallest blade I have and drill half a dozen holes at a time then cut, rinse and repeat, until the project is finished.
  24. Thanks for this. I never knew that the makers had there own sizes ?? I will either need to use 1 make of blade or measure every blade I use. There is a post somewhere else on the forum where someone wants a drill chart to suit his blades ?? looks like that will be a long job. I must go out the shed and see what my blade sizes look like, I am using Pegas and Niqua at the moment but there may still be some Olson. Thanks again for this. Don W
  25. That is not a pretty sight !! Hope it gets better soon.
