  9. May I say thanks to all you guys that have contributed to this thread. I have been following this (lurking) with a great deal of interest as I am in the process of starting a scroll saw group at my local 'Mens Shed' . We don't have a lot of (any ?) money and there are quite a few people interested in joining in. I have always used Olsen but recently have tried Pegas blades because the Olsen blade was in short supply here and I was happy with the Pegas. Now the same problem has arisen and I am trying the Niqua blades. My goto blade is #5 and my first try with the Niqua blade on a piece of 1" thick Ash had a lot of smoke and I was worried about the piece going on fire. It may have been a bad blade so I will try again in the morning. Thanks again for this information it has been a great help (for me). take care Don W PS As I have noted above, I am helping with the scroll saw group at the 'Shed' and am wondering if it would be better (cheaper) buying in bulk and selling on to the membership at cost price ?? I expect there will be a high breakage rate at the beginning and we can ill afford to hand out free blades to our learners.
  10. I use Gimp and I simply open/import the design/pattern, usually a jpg image, go to Colours > Colourise and move the 'Hue' bar to the right to get Red. You can also add the middle bar 'Saturation' to the right to 100%. Click on 'OK' and the jobs a good 'un. I think Travis answered this question from me a couple of weeks ago
  11. Seems a logical answer Don W
  12. Great first piece. Very well done. Don W

  15. Thanks Brian, I think I know what is going on now. I was a little mixed up. Glad it's sorted now. Don W
  16. Very nicely done. I would like to make one of these some day are they made to a design ?? Don W
  17. Thanks for that spirithorse, I see what has happened now. As Steve has released the pattern I can use it but I will, of course, credit Steve as the designer. I was thinking simple design, simple cutting, I could probably start this as Segmentation and paint with Acrylic paint and finish with a coat of spray varnish. take care Don W PS Thank you everyone for the interest shown in this little project. I was at the 'Shed' this morning and the 'techie' crowd were in setting up wireless routers etc. I didn't get much time on the lathe project I have to finish before I can get the scroll saw classes started but there is a bit of interest from half a dozen people so that will be enough to get started I think. Again thank you all.
  18. I have sent a message to Brian but I don't know that it is in the right place. I will await his response (if any). Don W
  19. Thanks for all the help chaps. @spirithorse, I have downloaded the pattern and am about to PM Brian. @meflick, I saw the pattern on Judy's site.but was sidetracked by the 'bears' patterns, I may send (later this year) for the whole series of them. We have just set up a 'Men's Shed' in Glenrothes and I have been put in charge of the Scroll Saw and the Pyrography sections. I have 4 interested members for the scroll saw and I have copied and used the practice patterns that Travis produced. When I saw the 'Scarecrow' I thought it ideal for the class as it could be done as Intarsia with different woods or Segmentation with cutting from a piece of Redwood and staining. I will just need to ask Bpardue for permission to use his design in the class, and if he gives it I may turn it into a competition that they must complete by the Open Day this year, Thanks again all of you. take care Don W PS Thinking of the competition, I may post the pieces on here and ask for criticism/judgement on what you all think of them.
  20. I would like to use this design and need to know who created it. Anyone help me please ?? take care Don

  25. Hope this doesn't take away anything from your post but I can answer Marg if I may. @Marg, I ordered the "Contact Brand Clear Covering Self-Adhesive Privacy Film and Liner, 18 inches by 9 feet, clear matte" from Amazon.uk on the 9th December 2017 (my birthday present to me). It was promised delivery 'Saturday 6th January - Friday 19th January 2018'. It did arrive on the 11th January 2018 from 'otcforyou', a company in New Jersey, USA I believe. I haven't used it yet but part of the English Instructions say 'Raw wood and water based paint must first be given a coat of varnish or shellac', Surface must be above 55 degrees F (13 C), allow at least 3/8" overlap for possible shrinkage' Sorry about butting in but I hope this helps Marg take care Don W PS I forgot to say it cost £10.43 including P & P.
