  1. Bruce, Yes the middle ring is not quite the same hight as the ring. I have also cut the center ring at an angle on some of the past ones. This one I didn't because I started cutting at a 90° before I remembered. cutting it at an angle does give a nicer fit and makes it easier to glue in place. Like the flag idea. Nice touch. The stand I use is a Steve Good pattern, called a plate stand. I enlarge it quite a bit. I also have to sand or cut the bottom to slant to give it more of a backward slant. it you don't it is a little unstable and can fall forward. One of these days I want to spend a little time and come up with a better one for my emblems. I just started a "Retired Navy" one that I want to give to close friend of my son, that I met last time I visited. He retired after 35 years, It is going to Tennessee.
  2. Okay I am going to post this just to give everyone a laugh. This is my boot graduation picture. Me 1963, 145 pounds of hell, death and destruction! Being in the Marines was one of the highlights of my life. Some of my worst and best memories. I never felt I needed to be thanked for my service, I always felt I was lucky I made the decision, on a dare, to try it. I was the first in my family to serve. My older brother follow when he got a draft notice. He joined the Army.
  3. @Dave Monk Ha, I have that book also.. I new I had seen that before. I have a piece of the alternate ivory left from my pen making days. I am going to give it a try one of these day. I do not know about the finish. That could be difficult. Also, I can not find it thick enough to make a chess piece, so the question is will it hold if I glue two pieces together. But I think it would make beautiful chess pieces if it worked.
  4. Have not seen that before. I agree very well done.
  5. I have stack cut many detailed pictures and portraits, but my limit is 3- 1/8" layers. That is just my preference. If you are comfortable cutting 3-1/4" why would you not?
  6. Dave is the second set a Diana Thompson pattern? i want to make a set, and am going to see if I can. 3D cut "alternative Ivory". It would make beautiful pieces but I do not know how dfficult it would be to cut on a scroll saw. I use to turn on a lathe.
  7. Maybe you could find someone in your area that has a scroll saw that would cut the little project for you or let you do in on the saw.
  8. Oh, so beautiful, Frank. A+!
  9. I do not know what is legal anymore where I live. I do not care, I do what I want.. at my age life in prison is not much of a deterrent. At least in prison I would not have to worry the inflation,, I would have a bed, three meals a day and too old to be pestered by any young buck...
  10. Very nice!
  11. There are three layers but I can do it with two pieces of BB two patterens, and no waste. It is 1/4" BB. One pattern used to cut the border rope and the waste is used as the backer. the second one is used for the rest of the piece, the globe and anchor circle is cut out and glued back in at the hight wanted. View from the back
  12. Ha! I did not do that good. I think I paid a little over $4 for mine. There are couple sellers on there that sell for Good Will Industries. I have always received great service from them. The last book I ordered from them was said to be in used condition. It had been used, the person that used it kept it in a plastic sleeve (which came with the book). the sleeve had a little paint on it, the book was like new.
  13. Darn Charlie, every time I see something about a past character I think of you and your famous portraits... Tonight I ran across one that I only knew from his character in the great old tv series "Gun Smoke". Festus Haggen, Come to find out that was one of his least accomplishment. He was a singer that sang with the likes of Frank Sinarta a lead on "Sons of the Pioneers" acted in movies with the like of John Wayne. Real name Ken Curtis. Do your portraits go back that far? You have found your niche with these portraits an someday a museum will be displaying them. Or some celebrity place like Club 21,, seriously!
  14. Nice cutting and the perfect piece of wood for it.
  15. Beautiful in all respects! Dave, you are an artist for sure.
  16. I purchased this book.... Got off ebay, like new for less than half price. Great book, I have made one from each branch and gifted it to a family member. Probably one of the most well received gifts I have given.
  17. I would have assumed the same as you. I wonder if it is the same on a Seyco. I never tried cut at a slant on my Seyco when I had it. One alternative you could try, is slant the table as far as you can without hitting the side the hole then make a wedge to make up the remaining degrees. Would be awkward but might work.. however I will be very disappointed it this is true about the saw. Would almost be false advertising. Can not wait to read the answers. Does the table have slot that the bolts go so it could be shifted right or left if needed?
  18. I have been making some things. I just finished this Marine Emblem. This is the 6th one I have made. Everytime I make one I end up giving it to a Marine I meet. Then I have to make myself another one. The last one I gave to a Marine, it was my Dental Hygienist. She was pretty excited.. So here it the last one. I am now starting a Navy one for a retired Navy friend. He spent 35 years in the Navy.. He deserves one.
  19. You have created a great picture.
  20. Use to be a time when we had an abundance of jackrabbits in our part of the state. I use to hunt them all the time. they were every where. Now days I get more excited seeing a jackrabbit than a deer, (didn't use to have deer in this area). Same with pheasants, use to be the pheasant capital of this part of the west. Now you never see them. I should cut that pattern in honor of the Jack rabbit. You did a great job. Brought back memories.
  21. Super! Great looking boxes!

That is a beautiful picture. Nice work!
  23. very well done. That turkey is a cutie! I really enjoy 3-D scrolling.
  24. You do a great job on all your portraits and I think portrait of people are the hardest to get to look real good.
  25. Nice box. Your are off to a good start. If you really get into boxes and using box joints I highly recommend investing the time and a little money to make a good boxjoint jig. I did this one, not hard to make works very well, fully adjustable to different size joints and very accurate https://www.woodsmithplans.com/plan/box-joint-jig/
