  1. I have a full shop. About the only thing I don't use for scrolling is my lathe. Most of the other tools get used for a purpose just not every day.
  2. Dick I'll soon find out soon. The Mrs. seen this and wants two of them cut for our upcoming shows. When I down loaded the pattern it read Grandmother which I'll cut two of them. I did like you and cut and edited the one line to say mothers. When I was drilling the holes my old and feeble mind drilled the wrong letters (of) so I walked away before I got upset to take a break and this will be the Grandmothers cut. Such is the life in a shop .
  3. Veining cuts will stand out once finished. I cut mine with what ever blade I normally cut the pattern with. I do stain most of my work and that enhances those cuts.
  4. I use blue painters tape. Spray the pattern and then cut. I only use packing tape on deeper cuttings. The spray adhesive I use is 3M super 77 and never had a problem.
  5. Thanks for posting this. Good advice and practices too. If I only have to make one then I use a playing card taped to the saw table as a zero clearance which also supports the pieces.
  6. Very nice work and words to live by too.
  7. As has been stated here you have to allow for the drift. Some really great advice has been given.
  8. I got my 6 footers from Sams Club and am very happy with them. I also have an 8 footers I got from Walmart and it has done me very well over the past 3 or 4 years.
  9. For the hanger I mix up some epoxy and glue a saw tooth hanger to the back is it is too this to use a screw or short brads. You can also use a glue called E-6000 which sets up pretty quick and holds very well.
  10. I want to apologize to the designers here. When I posted this my mind sat was on PAID patterns. Although the one I was cutting from Karl Taylor was free. I totally respect and appreciate those that take the tie and efforts to help the other villagers and share their skills here. So with said I hope I didn't step on anyone's toes. I assure you it was not intentional. Please accept this apology.
  11. I think it would be safe that many of us have been there and done that. Not a happy place I know first hand. The worst one I had was 16 hours cutting, taking off the pattern it slipped out my hand ( like a fool I was walking around to stretch my legs ) and it hit a concrete floor. I still haven't forgot that and now remove patterns on my work bench.
  12. Working in the shop today I was cutting patterns from a couple different designers. One from Marilyn Carmin. Sue Mey, Sheila and Keith and another from Carl Taylor. I enjoy all these people's designs and it got me wondering who my favorite was which lead to others as well. For me it would be a toss up between Mike Fehring, Marilyn Carmin and Charles Dearing. All do very detailed designs. When I first started typing this in many more pop into my head that I really enjoy too. So who is yours ?
  13. Having more then one Drill Press would be great. I have a Ryobi in my shop, bench top and would like more depth so this is something I have considered over time. I agree having to change the set up on a daily basis is a bit of a pain in the glutious maximous but a necessary evil. There are days I change my bits and setting many times to get a job done and out. But thinking about the investment I have trouble justifying the expense. Also changing the belts for speed is a pain. Keep us posted on your progress with this.
  14. Nice bouquet. I'm officially envious but super happy for you
  15. Welcome to the village. Nice work indeed.
  16. Welcome to the village and scrolling. First off it is very addicting. The old Ex's are no longer supported for parts so finding a needed part may prove to be difficult. I'm not sure about the Delta so I can't answer on that one. As Kevin mentioned seeing and trying is the way to go. Checking craigslist is another place to look if you haven't already. Make sure you know what to look for in the saw you want. Lots of good information on the site about that. Wouldn't want to see anyone get burned on lack of knowledge and experience by someone not so honest. What you may think s a minor vibration could be a major problem. I will say that I love my EX-21 and it gets used for 6 - 10 hours a day most days and just waits for the next project.
  17. When I first started I stood. Now I sit in a modified stool that I shortened about 2 inches. Much easier on the back and shoulders and neck.
  18. I use regular masking tape around the sides. Holds well gets thrown out once cut. There are many ways to do this. Try different ones and find the one that works best for you.
  19. There are a lot of things that cause blades to break. The bigger ones are speed and feed rate. If your speed is too high or your forcing the blade through the cut that is almost guaranteed breakage. Using inferior blades will cause this also. Choosing the right blade, the right speed and the right feed rate is critical in scroll sawing. Takes time to learn all of this. Olsen produced a chart for their blades. The blade chart can be found here. Great information for folks starting out.
  20. I ran into an older machine for a similar price. I wrote Ray @ seyco.com about it. Parts were not available . So I passed on it. I ended up buying a new EX-21 and haven't looked back since.
  21. I have 5 in my shop. 3 of them don't work at all or vibrate so bad they are unusable. Just haven't got around to throwing them out for scrap. The Excalibur EX-21 is my daily saw. The other is a back up so I can play around with stuff or if my Ex goes down.
  22. I normally set and cut what I can do in a day or two.I also have one project as a fill in for work. These are normally something that takes a couple days to cut or the pattern is so detailed it wears the eyes out quickly. I'm always making progress that way in my shop. It does get a little difficult to remove the blue painters tape after a month or so. I think everyone has a system they work by and it all depends on is it just a hobby or do you do it sales and shows. My wife has us booked months in advance for shows so there is always work to be done. As you prgress in this you will get your own system that works for you which may not be good for someone else.
  23. I use blue painters tape and 3M super 77. Don't have any issues with that. The only time I use clear packing tape is on thicker wood or compound cuts to hold things together.
  24. So sorry to hear about this. Will keep all in prayer for healing comfort and strength,
  25. Welcome to the village. You may want to post this in the pattern request forum. More folks will probably see it there and there are some fantastic pattern makers here. Would also help in your request to provide some photos which could help a lot.
