  1. Congrats on the find. Looking forward to seeing what it turns into. Please keep us posted.
  2. The fonts I use varies. I like Times New Roman and Bookman Old Style. Both are fairly simple and fairly easy to convert to scrolling. For script Birds of Paradise is nice to work with. You can find fonts at DaFonts.com. Lots of selections up there or just google free fonts and it will give you a list of places.
  3. I use a "dead man" foot switch. Won't go with out it.
  4. I made shelves for the smaller cut offs, less than 2 feet under my chop saw. The wood is sorted by type, pine, oak, maple etc. For BB I have two boxes one for 1/8 and one for 1/4. These are from paper reams and make it easy to find a piece too big to toss but smaller for little projects. The longer board are all stacked on a rack I have and labelled according to what they are. Sheet goods are standing together unsorted but are easy to identify.
  5. Well your off to a great start. Take your time and practice. The arcs and corners will come as you get more comfortable and learn the machine and blades better. Keep in mind we were all there at one point. As your practice more and more things will start to come together and you will increase in your learning. Welcome to the addiction it's a great place to be and your in good company :).
  6. A friend of mine has been making toys for years. He uses nothing but pine and they seem to hold up for him.
  7. As the history books say. Rome wasn't built in one day. Best of luck on this huge undertaking.
  8. I'm sure your in good company. I actually have a box in my shop marked designer firewood. Glad you caught it before it got shipped.
  9. Looks like your in good company with the back. I spent my life bent over fenders working on cars, plus laying on the floor working under the dash boards. My back is a wreck as well as a few other parts . I purchased a bar stool at a store that was going out of business. Then I built a stand for my scroll saw. I basically sit straight up looking down using my neck. I take breaks and move around as needed. I also don't stand on concrete. I have those rubber floor things on the concrete floor. And where my saw is is carpeted so softer to walk on. Every little bit helps.
  10. Your off to a good start. Let the fun begin
  11. For me it all depends on what I am working on. For portraits I use black felt ( normally ) since it makes the art work pop. Other pieces I do I stain the backer board to the desired color. A lot of depends on the desired effect I am going for. I always use something in a matte finish since you don't want any glare taking away from the scrolled work. I'm sure others will chime in on this and help better explain it.
  12. You can also leave it assembled as is then stain it. Once stain you can take it apart wait for the stain to dry the glue it together and apply your top coat. I do this with some of the furniture I build, keeps the glue joints clean and no glue residue to interfere with the stain. Just a thought. Just make sure your assembly is tight when you stain it.
  13. I was told many years ago that the only dumb question was the one that wasn't asked. Took me a while to understand. If you don't ask you may not understand. One thing I really love about the village is how the members help each other and support their efforts. Please feel free to ask any questions we were all there once and all got help in learning and understanding.
  14. I have an HP and I like it. If I were shopping for a new printer I would take a good look at the cost of the ink. Printers are fairly cheap anymore but the price of the ink is expensive. The HP I have is an All-in-One, printer, scanner fax. I don't use the fax. The Model is HP Photo smart 6520. For buying all four factory cartridges runs about $125. Someone else up here was posting about this not long ago, can't remember who. Maybe a good read if you can find the thread.
  15. Nice work on these. I haven't had any requests but I'm sure there would be a small market for it. I don't think people are into family heritage and doing family trees like back in the day but for those that do, this could be a great addition for them.
  16. Last time I was in my local store the display didn't change. Thinking online only
  17. I just looked at and it came up fine for me. Can you read a pdf file? I'm not being funny but some don't have the plug in for the browser.
  18. Ditto about iggy. He has done well with them. Scroll Saw Wood works also offers a book called Woodimals as well as individual patterns and cd's. You can find them @ Scrollsaw Woodimals.
  19. Dick A pre-stain wood conditioner will do the trick. I use MinWax and it is water based. I use a spray bottle to dampen the surface and let it dry. Very lightly sand it, clean it then apply the conditioner. This way when I sand prior to applying the conditioner I don't have to worry about taking too much off. As for the grit 220 works great for me. Just be gentle and you will remove all the raised fibers and not what was pre treated with the water misting spray.
  20. I was going to suggest Arnold's site but that has been done. Sue Mey has a few on her site also. I have the Angel Arch one I got from one of the magazines, either SSW or Creative Woodworks. They are fun to do and people seem to really like them.
  21. Congrats on the find Dick. Happy for you.
  22. Looks really nice. Nice job cutting it out.
  23. Didn't know Rockler was putting them into the store. Seen them on line for them and HomeDepot. I was just at local HomeDepot and didn't see any on display.
  24. I agree with Don. There are free programs on the internet that can convert it for you. Also like Sam I can convert it to a PDF or many other file formats.
  25. I bought some of them years ago from JGR when I purchased a few of her patterns Like any other blade they have their positives and negatives. I did like the way the #7 Platinum cut through thick wood. Today I stay with Flying Dutchman blades. I can look and see if I have any in my shop and mail them too you. Just not sure what is in there.
