Wow Doug, you said everything that I would have said. I started with a used Dewalt type 1 and did the bearings. It ran almost as smooth and quiet as my Ex. The Hawk are great saws but you must acquaint yourself with their weak spots. Same for the Hegners. But with that said, I would still go the used route because so many people buy scroll saws and rapidly lose interest due to the learning curve required and the quality of the saw they started with. All of my saws had very little usage. And after all the buying/selling I have very little invested.

I see folks using a Laguna from time to time. I think in 16" but not sure. Too rich for my blood so I don't pay that much attention.

It seems to me that these blades could be used in either direction if the teeth go both ways. Maybe not quite as well but it should work. Maybe that's the OP's problem. He might have been using them in the wrong direction. They would cut but try to go astray. Maybe???

Thanks Paul. What I liked about the ROKR kits is that they are gear driven when finished. Turn the crank and watch all the mechanism turn. Pretty cool.

I built a very low stand for my EX and I found an old office chair at one of the lots after they cleared the mobile home out. I brought it home and cleaned it up and at it's uppermost position, it's perfect. And I left the arms on it. I guess it all depends on the height of your saw. You might make a trip to Staples of Office Depot and sit in their office chairs. I see used chairs on Facebook Marketplace all the time for free on up. Never very much.

I guess it was just a passing thought. I got a reply back from ROKR puzzles informing me that they do not sell any patterns but if I was to buy a kit, it would be my own business if I wanted to make up my own patterns. I must might do that. SOMEDAY!. I just really want that locomotive. It would look neat on my wall.

I'm posting this here but if it needs to go somewhere else, please move it. I came across this advertisement for a laser cut model kit but I want to try making it on a scroll saw. Have any of you folks ever done this or even attempted it? I'm wondering if there are paper plans for this or something similar available. I've been doing a little bit of searching but so far I haven't found one like this. I was thinking it might be a project that could be worked on in between other stuff. A project to take your mind off of whatever you've been working on. And furthermore, I love trains.

Yes, by all means. I'd love to see what it looks like. I've been tempted to poke a hole in mine and put a plastic tube through it. Just to sip some water once in a while.

I understand your situation completely. Everybody has a different situation. That's why it's so ludicrous for them to keep saying we are all in this together. We may all be in the same storm but we are most all in different boats and some will make it far better than others.

Kevin, we go shopping at will. Some places demand a face covering but we have not been turned away anywhere. BUT we still have not been able to find good paper towels. Cheap ones are available at Walmart but those don't last long.

Dick, all the Hawks have a spring loaded upper arm that will raise by itself when you either break a blade or undo the upper blade clamp. The arm has a spring at the rear of it and once you load the blade and adjust the tension, you should not have to mess with that adjustment again unless you change blade types/sizes. It is pretty much a constant.

Or better yet, why no incorporate a similar item on their saws? I myself put the Jim Dandy arm lift on my Dewalt and it worked great. At only $25 it was a very good investment. Now, I have 2 Excaliburs so the subject is moot at my house.

Yeah, Sears NEVER made anything of their own. Everything was made by whoever came in with the lowest bid.

My hearing is bad enough now that I can't listen to much of anything without some sort of headphone/amplification. We listen to TV using two sets of TV Ears. We can each control our own volume. By the time I put on my dust mask, my glasses, my hat and my over-the-ears hearing aids, there is not much room left for any other stuff. My one gripe about my dust mask/respirator is that nobody has ever incorporated a straw/tube for drinking through. In order to sip coffee or water or my favorite beverage, I have to go through the whole riggamorole of taking everything off and putting it back on. PITA!

I'm happy to hear that you had no overheating problem. That's the one thing that bothered me as there is some hot air coming out the back of the vac. Maybe I'll follow your lead with the velcro so it can be removed if necessary. Did you leave the bottle the size it was or shorten it? I was thinking of taking about 3 inches off the neck just to give me more room for the plumbing. Also, did you hook it up to your foot switch or turn it on and leave it run? I'm going to set mine up so that it runs with the saw.

Les, that's the sort of deal I have been waiting to come along. I used to have one just like that but it was a Craftsman. The part I loved best is the spindle lock. You can put that spindle anywhere you want it and lock it there. I miss that feature so much. I'll have to get more serious about finding another one. There is one near me but they are asking way too much for it.

I've been waiting for someone to ask. Those are my slide out/slide in handles for moving my saw.

I have bought 2 MetroVacs on eBay and got one for under $50 plus tax and free shipping. When I set mine up I'm going to use a double outlet on my foot switch to activate both saw and vac so it doesn't run constantly.
