  1. You must not have a wife like mine. She won't even let me bring one of my scroll saws into my office/man cave. LOL. Anyway, if I can't find something that is useable, I'm going to build one out of my Makita 0800 portable planer. I've watched a few videos on some folks who have done it and they were very pleased with the outcome. I'm not into big projects anymore so it might just be the answer to my needs.
  2. JT , I used to watch his show every week and he mentioned it once on his show and then I bought his book "Measure twice cut once" and in the book he talked about it if I recall correctly. At the time, I think he blamed oak and all the work he did with oak for his problem. I'm pretty sure he beat it. He is still around but not much.
  3. Kevin, you mentioned "sinus infection". Just a word to the wise. Make sure you aren't suffering from fine sawdust up your nose and giving you an infection. I can't recall whether or not you use a dust mask. I remember Norm Abrahms on New Yankee Workshop got nasal cancer from working around wood dust without a mask. Make sure that what you call sinus infection is really that. Get it checked out if you haven't already.
  4. In my past life, I had what you suggested. I have a Delta Unisaw and a good jointer and planer. But, now that I live in a mobile home, that isn't possible so I must work with what I have. I have fine-tuned my Dewalt portable saw to do the best it is capable of doing. I'm trying to find a good small jointer that I can store under my bench when not in use. I will figure out a way to do it but it just requires more thought and planning.
  5. Thanks Paul. You are too kind. I seem to recall a certain canoe that you built. That put me back on my haunches. You are the talented one. I still have a ton of stuff from that same book that I want to make but I keep finding other stuff that my wife wants. Or a neighbor wants or whatever. I just wish I could find a cheap source of wood. That and time is all that is holding me back.
  6. That's neat. I love hearing about places like that. Too many small shops have closed their doors.
  7. I know, some of you folks have seen these before and are probably tired of me posting them but for the folks who may not have seen them, these are 3 of my baskets that I am now making for folks. I enlarged the pattern and will be turning out some bigger ones soon.
  8. Thanks, I wasn't aware of the "stabilizer". Interesting.
  9. Well then, if I'm now included, I might suggest looking at this place. I realize that it's on the West coast but they have great wood, the owner is a Vet and maintains a small museum on his premises and is all around a great guy. I went there once and found some 5/16" baltic birch that had a water stain on one side. I bought 2 sheets 4 x 8 for $5 ea. They even cut them for me so they'd fit in my little Scion. Anderson International Plywood. http://www.aitwood.com/
  10. Speaking of the Carter add-on, do you feel that it is that much of an improvement over the stock blade guides to warrant the cost? Almost as much as the cost of my saw ($350). I always wondered if they really helped that much to pry the money out of my wallet.
  11. Why did you limit your question to just the "Nice People"? You don't care about the where I buy mine? I'm crushed!
  12. I like the reasoning behind mesquite.
  13. I have no actual experience here but from what I have read and heard, the advantage of gel stain is it's controllability. From what I have read, you can wipe it on and not have it going all over the piece and it doesn't soak in as fast so you can come back on it and wipe it off before it gets too deep into the wood. Ok, that's all I know.
  14. The only apple wood I have ever seen was a few items that my great grandfather carved for me when I was very young. Unfortunately, I was TOO young and didn't place the correct value on them and they got away from me. The wood though is a very nice straight grained light colored wood.
  15. Just for the heck of it, I'm going to guess "apple". I don't know why but it just came to mind.
  16. Iggy, I sell a lot of stuff on C/L and a while back, I got a very similar response on an item that I was selling. I wrote back to them that it's true that I was born at night but it wasn't LAST NIGHT! I never heard another word.
  17. I have that same magazine and I am thinking about making a set of chess pieces. But, the bad part is, then I'd have to make a chess board. My table saw is not the best so it will be a real test to try to make that many truly square pieces. But, it will prove to be a good challenging project.
  18. This was my first attempt. 8 side panels.
  19. I agree. Great saw. I paid that much for my Delta 8 years ago. You will never regret having a bandsaw in your shop. Whenever I need a quick cut, instead of setting up my portable table saw, I just do it on my bandsaw.
  20. I have no idea what it is but I'll bet it's way too hot. And, I said "not centigrade". It's Fahrenheit for me. And, I don't speak metric either.
