  1. Well congrats on Indiana. California is going in the opposite direction. They are so shackled by the unions here and the backward thinking, at this point we have no hope. Sad. I always wanted to be a shop teacher but I didn't want to have to go through all the nonsense classes to get there. So I started my own business instead.
  2. That's great to hear. We need more trade/shop classes back in our schools. The folks in charge seemed to have forgotten that we still need to have things fixed. Where are you located?
  3. I have a close friend who lives in a senior park there by the name of Quail Ridge, if I'm not mistaken.
  4. First off, welcome to the SSV. I know you will gain a ton of knowledge here. I know for sure I did and still do. I agree with Kevin in that the saw once tuned is only so good. The way it is mounted makes a huge difference. It must be rock solid. I have built wooden stands for both my Dewalt and my EX21. They also both sit on foam rubber floor matting. No vibration at all or little to none. Both saws have a "sweet spot" where I tend to do most of my cutting. As CharleyL said, the choice of wood and the blade will determine the cutting speed.
  5. Here is what I found. My wife buys Target brand and Puffs brand. I printed out the patterns just as they were in Steve's plans. Both of the boxes will fit but the Puff's is a tiny bit smaller on one side. Barb says she doesn't buy the Kleenex brand because it's always higher in price. So I'm going with Steve's plans as they are. I did make sure that they printed at 100%.
  6. Whereabouts are you in AZ?
  7. I am going to make this one too. I did measure a few boxes of tissue and found that there doesn't really seem to be a standard in the industry as to size. So, I'm going to make mine to fit the largest one I found and the rest will just have to be a sloppy fit. I also asked Steve for a custom pattern for the sides. We live in an area that palm trees are very prolific so my wife wanted palm trees on the sides. Steve is such a great guy, it took him overnight to send me a pattern.
  8. Yay! Now, if you haven't already done this, go to Gwinnette Woodworkers on Youtube and watch the 4 part video on how to service you saw. Do that FIRST. I guarantee you that it has never been done. Buy some synthetic grease and a package of pipe cleaners and go to work. You will love that saw once it's greased and tuned up. AND parts are still all available for it. Congrats on your new toy.
  9. I found these. I think 140 mm is more than 5 inches. If I recall one inch is 25.4 mm. https://www.amazon.com/Rainbow-B-Clear-Plastic-25x140mm-Beaker/dp/B01LVXE98H/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?keywords=Plastic+Safety+Test+Tube+5.5+L+x+1+(OD)+Inches+Preform+Threaded+Cap&qid=1551400182&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmr1
  10. I'd sure love to be there to experience that. I love watching sawmills in operation. I went to a steam tractor show a few years back and they had a big old steam tractor out in the field with a long long belt running to a sawmill. They were milling lumber from logs. Fascinating to say the least.
  11. Paul, that's exactly what I have decided to do. And you are right about the shipping. That's the bugaboo on all the wood suppliers. I have a pretty good one about an hour from me so I am going to try to put together and order and go pick it up when it gets large enough to warrant the trip. My Buick Enclave gets crappy gas mileage.
  12. You mentioned sapele. I want to make a bowl from a pattern in SSWC a couple of years back. It calls for 3/4" sapele but I have yet to find a supplier. Where did you find yours? I have found turning blanks I might add.
  13. I did buy the top one but got busy and didn't read all of it. It's a great book.
  14. I pretty much cut clockwise turning the wood counterclockwise. Unless, as Kevin said, I'm doing double bevel work.
  15. I used to compete in military 3-gun competition. I have a High Standard Trophy model .22 bull barrel for that part of the competition and two 1911's for the other 2 parts. One has an extended front sight and both have Bowmar rear sights. Both of them have been highly accurized with 3 lb. trigger pulls. I came within 5 points of making the Olympic Team back in the early 80's. I also competed in precision air pistol and actually won the state championship once. That pistol is the most expensive gun I ever purchased. Back then, it set me back over $500. Made in Germany. The pellet exited the barrel at over 600 feet per second. I sure miss them days.
  16. Here too. Never a problem but there may come a day and I guarantee you that they will be very sorry. I keep the first chamber full of snake shot. But the second one is all business.
  17. Heck, that's standard operating procedure here. I'm too trusting. I openly invite folks to come here to buy/pickup whatever I'm selling. But, there is usually some conversation prior to that. I've been around for a while and sort of know what to look for. Oh, and I usually carry a .357 too.
  18. Maybe the only good thing about living amongst 30 million people. They sell a lot of stuff. Some of it is actually not stolen.
  19. I know that you probably already have done this but if not, DO check out Craigslist in your area. I watch it on a daily basis and there are quite a few great used saws on there. Especially in the price range that you are looking for. I only follow the better grade of saws always looking for that great price. Anyway, check it out and see if you can find somebody's cast off. Here is one example of what I'm talking about. https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/tls/d/santa-clarita-porter-cable-variable/6826070156.html
  20. Good info. Thanks.
  21. Some of the wood glues are water soluble so you might be able to wet it and get it to release. Just try to isolate the piece you want to free up.
  22. You have to do a "copy and paste" on that one. It's not a clickable link.
  23. Well, so far, I'm still not educated enough to know what I need to use so I have hesitated to buy anything in quantity. But, It looks like I'm going to be sticking to the Watco oil for a while. I have used it and once it's dried/cured I spray with spray lacquer. What can you tell me about varnish/spray varnish?
  24. I like it. I just have to start buying my stuff in gallons.
  25. Here is the manual and all the part numbers. file:///C:/Users/Ray%20Scrafield/Desktop/13&quot%3B%20(330mm)%20Bench%20Planer%20%E7%94%A2%E5%93%81%E8%AA%AA%E6%98%8E%E6%9B%B8.pdf Here is the company address/phone number http://www.dbkeighley.co.uk/masters/gpt317a.htm
