    Hey Ike. If you are using a finish that is thinned or cleaned up by mineral spirits ( like poly, tung oil, danish oil........) you can finish immediately. No need to let it dry. Now if you finish with a water based product or lacquer or shellac it must dry first.

    You have received a lot of great advice above. Let me throw in one more tidbit. Pine is not a good choice for novice puzzle makers. It has very pronounce grain patterns and your blade will tend to follow the grain. Try following the advice you received and cut it out of poplar or basswood.

    Just finished one of the ornaments designed by Montserrat as part of the Ornaments for Charity project. This was cut from 1/8" Baltic Birch. The inner part is layered. I cut that using a #1 FDUR blade with the table set at 12 degrees. I did use a wood burner to make it appear the tree is separate from the outer ring.

    Reverse tooth blades do not excel in doing compound cutting because the reversed teeth push sawdust back in the cut. That is why a skip tooth blade is preferred. For me the FD Polar blade is my first choice.

    I use a product called Deftoil. Like the name applies it is made by Deft. I use the natural color.

    I scroll a lot and all my saws ( I have three ) are setup with no angle. I do sit on a 30" bar stool .

    Wayne I run a food bank agency. Last year our agency distributed over 20 tons of food donated by people such as you and local businesses. We thank you and appreciate all the support especially this time of year. It does make a difference.

    I don't know about Menards but I know Lowe's does not carry Baltic birch in any thickness especially 1/16 or 1/32. Try a craft supply place like Michael 's or AC Moore. You can also get it online.

    Yes it is soft but works well for most compound cutting.

    For those new to compound cutting wood choice is also critical. Pine is a poor choice as your blade will fight to follow the grain. Start out with poplar or basswood.

    Eastern red cedar is very brittle. It is subject to cracking and splitting. Western cedar is soft. While not impossible neither would be my choice for a puzzle. Poplar should work out just fine.

    I make puzzles out of a variety of woods including red and white oak. My blade of choice for oak in a Pegas MG in either #3 or #5. Try the same puzzle using 3/4 oak and one of those blades. By the way what kind of wood is chipping out on you?

    I am Blessed to know and have worked with Charley. I have never met a person who would go the extra mile to help anyone more then Charley. He is a man of many talents.

    I often do this with patterns in magazines and other printed materials where I plan to make more then 1 or 2. My paste up method of choice is good old scotch tape.

    Congrats. If you really want to sell in this modern world you most be able to take credit cards. I agree people tend to but more when they can charge it.

    The one you see is cut from 3/16" maple. When I made them originally I stack cut them 3 high.

    I cut some hand bell ornaments for our church bell choir a few years ago. Well since that time several people have left (moved or passed) and new ones have joined. Anyway the bell choir director wants to give the new folks one of my bell ornaments. Problem is I can't find the pattern. Here is a picture of one. Anyway recognize it? I think it came out of one of the SS magazines but I can't seem to find it.

    If the piece allows I attach a business card to the back. I get my card from Vista Print. On rare occasions I may trim a card down slightly to get it to fit. I also sign and date larger pieces with an India Ink pen. Small items like ornaments I do nothing.
