  1. FYI - Ultimately it doesn't matter for this particular project as it will be painted. Making Iggy's shelves for the puzzles to stand on. I just thought it was an interesting contrast in wood and hadn't really seen that blonde of poplar.
  2. Maybe I should run back to grab some more. They had a fair bit in the 1/4" x 4x6'. The thicker boards were the "green" colours.
  3. I was at a local big box store today to buy some wood. Wanted 1/4" poplar for a project. The piece on the left is some leftover, or not yet used, from 2 years ago. The piece on the right was purchased today. It was labeled as poplar. Regardless of what it is, it was purchased to use for the intended project. Just thought the difference is looks was quite dramatic. Other larger Poplar boards had the more familiar look like the piece on the left.
  4. Happy Birthday Barbara! Enjoy the new saw, but don't let the old one get jealous!!! Barb(ara)
  5. I run a Chrome book and it took awhile for me to figure it out. I have to download it first and then go into the downloads and it, somehow, magically plays!!!
  6. Frank, there is a hint of grain in the top right hand corner. I suspect it is bb ply.
  7. Great cutting. Not only do I have the song running through my brain, but I now have tears leaking out of my eyes. This was one of my dad's favourite songs and was played at his funeral. Most recently, my sister used it as the song to dance with her son at his wedding.
  8. Where do you buy the pre-manufactured framing material?
  9. Thanks. I don't think I am a great painter. I certainly haven't tried any shading/contouring that I have seen on others.
  10. Thanks for the details. I would like to start making frames but I guess I will need to update some things in the shop. I don't have a table saw or router. I just use a Dremel with the router bits.
  11. I just got some from Garnet Hall but haven't used any yet. Sorry cant help. Love the phrase "bugbear". Might just have to start using that!!
  12. Beautiful.
  13. I like that the body of the work is "floating" on the backer.
  14. Sorry for your loss. Those are great patterns and well executed.
  15. For all the gnomes I have made, these are really the only ones I have sold. I did sell a few "Christmas" ones. As much as people say they like, I don't seem to be able to sell them!!!
  16. The customer is my daughter! She is giving them to a friend for their anniversary!
  17. Nice clean cutting. I am not going to comment on the colour but I am going to ask about the frame because I would like to attempt to make some myself. How thick is the poplar that you used. I assume you rabbeted the inside 1/4" for the thickness of the MDF and that the 1/8" ply covers the frame as well???
  18. Nice cutting John. Great finishes as well.
  19. Commission piece all done and waiting pickup! BB ply, #5 mg blade, acrylic paint, blue is a custom colour, shellac finish.
  20. I find their shipping costs, in Canada, to be very expensive. I had previously ordered a sample pack of blades from Mike @ Mikes workshop. They arrived, from the US in a regular envelope so the cost to send was under $3. When I ordered 1/2 dozen blades from Bearwood, the shipping was going to be, if memory serves, about $15.00. I asked if they could put them in an envelope for $2 in postage. I was told that it couldn't be done and I didn't know anything about shipping! I had just finished a job where I was the shipper and sent items like gaskets up to concrete mixers across North America!!
  21. Shouldn't that be "I see, said the blind carpenter, who tripped over his hammer and saw!"
  22. Couldn't find denatured alcohol. The isopropyl is what the supplier recommended. Seems to have worked out well. I was able to buy a 4 pack at Costco pharmacy so it was relatively inexpensive.
  23. great job.
  24. Looking forward to seeing your new ideas. Stay safe & be well.
  25. You might want to check with your insurance broker. Because you are earning an income from your hobby, ANY claim you may have on your house might not be covered because you didn't disclose the "business". Just call me a paranoid, now retired, insurance broker.
