If you place a light source off to one side of the blade, you will creat a shadow. This shadow intersects where the blade is. You now know where the blade is at all times!

Just a couple more dust collection questions

Hey Al, I use a shop vac connected to a Dust Deputy, but it is only hooked up to my random orbital sander. I use a full size 1 HP dust collector connected to a separator for everything else, including my scroll saw. The vac/ Dust Deputy does a great job for sanding, but I don't use it for anything else. The HP ratings on shop vacs are phony. It's impossible to get 5 HP on 110 volt circut. I 1/2 is about all you can get. The real ratings are amps. -

For me, it's not a business. Just an occasional thing. Using a scroll saw Is as safe as can be. If the student does not have any woodworking experience, I do all the drilling, sanding and anything else that might be needed. I suppose I need to have them sign a release form like they have too when I teach at the Woodcraft store.

Nice find Rob! I actually have two 788's. One as a back up, just in case my main saw breaks down. I also occasionally will give private lessons in my shop, so it's nice to have two saws.

If it is an 18", it may be an older version. There are no replacement parts for those older saws. If so, I would stay away from it.

A couple of years ago, I was doing a demo at the Woodcraft store that I teach at. The DeWalt rep was there and asked me how I liked the saw. I told him I like the saw but it does have some deficiencies and could use some improvements. He said he would like me to talk to the guy in charge of the DeWalt saw to give him some input. He took my card and said he would have him contact him. About a month latter, I got an email from the scroll saw rep and asked what was wrong with my saw. I emailed him back stating I would like to talk to him about the saw. He never returned my emails. So I called him as he left me his phone number. Always got his voice mail but never got a a call back. The point I am making is it is obvious that they really don't care!

From what I see, you mount the lower part to the lower blade guard. The second thing I recommend to folks is to remove the lower blade guard for better access to the blade clamp, the first is toss the hold down foot. I think the whole thing will just get in the way of feeding the blade. Just my 1/2 cent. I agree about the noise of a shop vac. I have my dust collector hooked up to my saw. The dust collector is a lot quieter than a shop vac, but it is still loud. When I am cutting, I usually have head phones on listening to either music or a football game or a NASCAR race or maybe even a Hocky game.
