The DeWalt saw was designed to aid in top feeding. It is so simple to do, why would you want to bottom feed!I too once had a Jim Dandy arm lift. As Scott did, I quickly took it off and tossed it! Do your self a favor and learn to top feed. Once you get the hang of attaching the blade to the bottom clamp without looking, it will take seconds to move the blade from one hole to the next.

Hey Terry, Welcome to the Village! I was one of those that recommended the Village to the Wood forum. I used to post a lot there when they had a scroll saw forum, but that changed a few year ago during one of the forum downgrades. This is a very friendly site, no prima donnas here! Did you buy from an online catalog like Wooden Teddybear or Scroller or Cherry Tree or something like that. If so, they source patterns from designers, some of which sell their own patterns too.

Typically, for portrait type patterns in the vault, you cut out the black. But not all patterns are drawn that way. If you buy patterns from online sources or get patterns from scroll saw magazine, there may not be any shading at all. And if you use patterns from Steve Good, you cut out the white. The bottom line is it is up to you to determine what to cut.

The EX 19 is one of the original Excalibur saws made in Canada which means it is at least 15 and maybe 20 years old. As was mentioned above, there are no replacement parts available for it.

Tony, be careful with Rosewood as it can be quite an irritant. Not many woods bother me, but Rosewood definitely does. Wear a dust mask and maybe even gloves. As for finish, you may not even need a finish as the wood will polish up very nicely. You definitely do not need to stain or oil it, just a top coat to protect it.

Nice cutting Nathan! In my opinion, pine is too soft for stand up puzzles. The wood dents easily and pieces could break off. You need to use a hard wood like Poplar or Maple especially if you plan on selling them.

Danny, you don't have to top feed on these saws. In fact, bottom feeding is easier because the top arm lifts up out of the way making it easier. But I do recommend top feeding though. Like was mentioned, I would never buy a saw that didn't have a lifting top arm!
