  1. I don’t stain! For most projects, I use hardwoods. I pick hardwoods that have grain that will pop when I apply oil. For portraits, I use BB without stain. I will either us a hardwood veneer plywood or a painted BB backer. If i paint the backer, I use a flat spray paint. I’ll paint the backer at least a week before I mount it to let the paint cure. Then once cured, I will glue the backer to the portrait with Aleen’s tacky glue. I do the same when I use hardwoods. After the glue is dry, I soak the items in my 50/50 mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. Then after the oil dries, I’ll top coat the item with Deft semi gloss spray lacquer. Occasionally, I’ll stain a backer using the same process.
  2. Laugh when you can, it’s good medicine. I have no idea where the pattern came from, it has been in my pattern file for years. 1/2” Maple with a Cherry veneer, MDF core plywood backer. I cut two. I finished these several weeks ago. I set them aside waiting for my finish to arrive via mail order. When I went to finish them, they had both warped. I had already posted them on my Etsy store. I removed them from Etsy and stuck them in a drawer. I came back a week later, and they both had flattened out! I sprayed my lacquer and they are both fine now!
  3. It looks very nice Kevin! BTW, welcome to the Village!
  4. Nice work Dan!
  5. Thanks Al! Kevin, nice job on that!
  6. I haven’t cut it yet but I have the pattern mounted and ready to cut sometime this week. With anything I cut, if necessary, I will adjust as I’m cutting. If something looks fragile, I’ll either not cut it as the pattern says, or cut it differently. I’ve been cutting over twenty years, I know what will be sturdy or not. In my opinion, Aspen is too soft a wood, which will make close cuts fragile.
  7. I have an old saying that I say all to often.....”dammit Dan!”.

  12. I think we all need to be optimistic that this will end soon. If we all heed directions by our local officials, we will be back to normal by summer. I’m still cutting for my shows at the end of the year and my Etsy store. I don’t sell much there because I don’t advertise, but I do sell some. And if the winter shows are cancelled, I’ll have plenty of stock for next year. Don’t be discouraged, things will even out! Stay positive!!!
