  1. I recently built a deck on my house, nothing big or fancy, but enough that I needed some help. Most of my friends are the type of people that have never picked up a hammer in their lives, but I asked a few anyway if they'd mind giving me a hand. To my surprise two of my buddies quickly agreed to help, but neither of them knew anything about building a deck. They were very eager to learn though and so my deck building became a lesson in simple construction for two of my friends. It was a lot of fun and I think they took a lot away with them. We talked a lot about how growing up their father's were not DIYrs and so never taught them the basics, but they both had always wanted to learn. I think there are a lot more people out there willing to learn to do basic DIY stuff.
  2. I'm going to chime in as an owner of the Delta saw. I've had mine about 2 years and have several hundred hours of use on it and have had no problems. I can't comment on how difficult it is to get parts for since I've not needed any as of yet. I'd say you can't go wrong with either of these saws.
  3. I love it! Something I would have never thought to try and now I'm fascinated. So many great ideas and too little time!!
  4. Most scrollers do it mostly as a hobby or for some extra cash to put back into their hobby. I think it would be extremely difficult to break it down into levels of expertise especially since a lot of us focus on one area of the hobby or another (portraits, puzzles, fretwork). It may just be me, but I would have little interest in putting a label on my hobby. I'm a scroller. I do it because I love to do it and if I make a few bucks at it so my Wife don't cringe at the costs as much then I'm happy. Interesting topic though, I'm interested in how others look at it.
  5. Wow I'm really impressed with your cutting of those long curves. Mine never come out that well...lol. I also love the choice of wood. Great work!!
  6. Looks great! These key chains always make great gifts, especially to folks whose names aren't as popular.
  7. Very nice cutting!
  8. I've been using the FD New Spirals for a long time and they work great for me. I'm not sure the differences in them though since I've really only used the FD New Spiral.
  9. Awesome project! I'm really looking forward to watching the progress of this one. A large clock is definitely on my "someday" list.
  10. I recently ordered some patterns from them and it took almost 2 weeks to get them. I was disappointed, until the package arrived and I seen that the post stamp was the day after I ordered it. So Wooden Teddy Bear did their part and got it out quickly, but the US Postal service took their sweet time delivering it.
  11. Thanks again everyone for the kind words. The lady I made them for stopped me today to tell me that her friend and her mother absolutely loved them. It made me feel real good. @Kevin I know what you mean Kevin, when I last bought Deft spay on lacquer I bought it on amazon for $6 a can, now its up over $12 a can. I don't think I'll be buying it at that price, I'll have to try some alternatives.
  12. Sam, I just finished them with a few coats of Daft clear spray on finish. New Guy, I did stack cut them. When I cut the outside line I had the two backers also stacked and was a bit worried about everything matching up well, but they ended up matching up great. Thanks for all the kind words!
  13. So I haven't shared anything in a long while so thought I'd share these elephants I cut. A woman that I work with asked me to make these. Her best friend's sister had died last year and she loved elephants. The woman I work with thought it would be nice to give one of these to her friend and her friend's mother as something to remember their loved one with. The pattern is by: Michael Brown (purchased from wooden teddy bear). The wood is 1/4" Baltic Birch with a 1/8" Baltic Birch backer. I painted the back board black as I felt it made the cuts stand out. I used FDUR #3 blades for most of the cuts and FD New Spiral 0/2 blades for some of the smaller cuts. Thanks for looking!
  14. I love it! Seen him live just weeks before he passed.
  15. Wow you did a great job with these. I love the idea and design of both of them. A great way to immortalize great musicians.
  16. That's some very nice work!
  17. Unfortunately Don most of the things that are popular with the kids (Star Wars) are under very strict copyright and making them to sell is not allowed. It would cost companies like WTB a fortune for the rights to make the patterns to sell and even if you bought the pattern and made something from it you wouldn't be able to sell what you made without having a license yourself. Copyright law can get very confusing.
  18. My 4 year old Granddaughter loves to sit and watch me scroll. I can't wait till she's old enough to learn to do it herself. I just hope in the mean time she don't lose interest in the mean time.
  19. Some very nice work!
  20. Looks great Kevin!
  21. I third the foot pedal!! One of the best investments I've made. Some other things that have made my life easier are a good set of needle files, and my exacto knife kit. Makes cleaning up detailed fretwork so much easier. Another handy thing I have is a Punch Awl that I keep next to my saw, I use it to knock out stubborn chunks of wood that get stuck in the fretwork.
  22. Just my opinion, but I'd say 2/0 blade on half inch Walnut is too small. I'd use the #3 for this myself.
  23. For a long time I used the blue painter's tape and glue method, but I kept having trouble getting all the tape off without it taking bits of wood with it. So no I mostly just glue the pattern directly to the wood and use mineral spirits to remove it. That has worked fairly well for me though sometimes I put a bit too much glue on and have to scrub the wood a bit to get all the sticky residue off.
  24. Proud bottom feeder here! When I started scrolling just a few short years ago it just seemed like the way to do it. I've tried top feeding on several occasions and it just seems awkward to me. I cant easily see under my table and honestly it hurts the old back to bend down and try and see what I'm doing. I've always felt that if it's not broke don't fix it...lol.
