  1. I play guitar and I'm quite familiar with a C note, however I've never once tried to get my blade to sound like one. When I first started out scrolling I was always worried if my blade had enough tension, but I've learned over time what feels right and what don't. You get a nice high pitch ping when you pluck the blade and your doing good. Even with a tuning fork you'd end up driving yourself crazy trying to get a perfect pitch out of a saw blade. Just my advice, someone else might see it differently though.
  2. Looks like you did a fine job. My first time trying spirals I couldn't believe that anyone would choose to use them, but not one to give up I kept working with them and I now feel just as comfortable with them as I do regular blades. Like others have said before they are a great tool in the right situations and a piece like the one you just finished is a perfect example. I haven't cut this one, but I'd say 7 hrs is about right though. As far as your breaking the blades, with the 3/0 blades its real easy to kink them while inserting them in the clamp and the slightest kink weakens them and causes early breakage. I've broke more than my share...lol. Once again great job and thanks for sharing.
  3. So I've been busy making some little Christmas gifts for friends and family, and thought I'd post a few. The "We believe in Santa" sign is a free Steve Good pattern and the key chains were all made using Steve Goods free Key Chain Pattern Maker. All are cut from red oak. The key chains are a great use of scraps. One thing I know for certain is that whatever my next project is it won't involve cutting letters...lol. Merry Christmas everyone!!
  4. Very nicely done! Thanks for sharing.
  5. Very nice!!
  6. So I figured why not...lol. Here is mine... https://www.facebook.com/JJScrollsawing/
  7. Great job with this! I've added this to my constantly growing list of must cut someday patterns. Thanks for sharing!
  8. Wow you really hit the ground running! You've done a great job with these, like Travis said they don't look like the work of a brand new scroller at all. Keep up the great work and welcome to a wonderful new hobby!
  9. This is why I love this forum so much, I posted this the other night and I come back today to so many people with nice things to say. Thanks everyone for the compliments, it really makes me feel good and motivates me to get back out on that saw. Don's pattern is amazing and I definitely recommend it to anyone, I'll certainly be cutting more of his in the future.
  10. For me it's #3 and #5 FD Ultra Reverse with a few #7s I rarely use. As far as spirals mostly 0/3, 1, and 3s and 5s rarely.
  11. So it's been awhile since I've been around here much. I've had a lot going on in life that has kept me from spending as much time at the saw as I'd like, but when I was at the saw I was working on cutting out two of these trains. The first one I cut as a Christmas present for my 4yr old Grandson. Soon after I finished it a friend seen it and asked me to cut him one. To be honest I wasn't really into the idea of cutting another so soon, after all it took me about 20 hours to cut the first, however he made an offer I couldn't refuse. So this is the second one that I'm delivering to him tomorrow. This is a wonderful pattern from http://oldcrowscrollwerks.weebly.com. I cut it from 1/4 in Baltic Birch and finished it with a coat of lemon oil. Thanks!
  12. Very sorry to hear about your friend Kevin. You did a great job on his memorial plaque.
  13. I also have the Delta and honestly have never given a thought to top feeding until reading this post. I've had a lot of trouble with not being able to see the holes on the bottom of the wood to feed the blade through. I might just have to give this top feeding thing a go. Thanks for the explanation of how you do it too, makes it seem so easy.
  14. I work with spirals a lot and prefer to use the smallest blade possible (usually 3/0). I tend to break a lot of them if I'm stack cutting, and sometimes have to give in and go with a larger blade like a 1 or 3. Like others have said though with spirals you want to use as little force as possible when feeding the wood to the blade, a good blade should do the work for you. I also agree with Kevin, make sure your blade tension is good and tight.
  15. Some beautiful work there! That clock is just epic!!
  16. I love it! Was a bit of a Ninja Turtle nut myself, and it's always good to look back and remember those times! Just finished cutting an R2-D2 for myself, for much the same reason...lol.
  17. Looks great, I'd love that hanging on my wall. Great cutting!
  18. When I first started a few months back, youtube was my best friend. There are a lot of great videos on there with some great tutorials and advice. I'm at work right now so I can't get on there to paste you some examples, but if you do a search for scroll saw tutorials you should find something. This site has also been a lot of help for me whenever I have questions so you've already took a great first step. As for your blade breaking problem there are a lot of things that could be causing it. Are you using pinned or pinnless blades? Could be too much tension or using too small a blade for the thickness/hardness of the wood you are cutting. What type of wood are you working with and what thickness? I'm a relative newbie myself so I'm sure the others will come along with much better information, but if I can remember tonight when I get home I'll post a link to a few of the good youtube videos I've found. Josh
  19. This is great, I might have to pick up that pattern myself. You've done a great job with it!
  20. These are great! Thanks to both of you. I'll show them to my friend and let him decide which he'd like, hell he might want them both...lol Thanks again ya'll.
  21. My friend's daughter is a big fan of Bob Marley and he asked if I could cut a portrait of him for her birthday. I found a couple on the pattern library here, but was hoping to find something a little more detailed than what is there. If anyone has anything or knows where I can find one, I'd appreciate any help. Thanks, Josh
  22. Very nice work! I love it!
  23. Well I don't have a lot of experiance with different types of woods, one of these day's I'm going to get around to trying out some of the more interesting woods. For now I cut a lot of Red Oak and of course Baltic Birch ply.
  24. As always they look great Kevin. You are the king of cutting letters, I wish I could get mine to come out as good.
  25. As a huge Star Wars fan and a collector of Star Wars memorabilia I must say I am drooling over all your recent Star Wars stuff. Great work!!!
