  1. Finished the Dragon Skull this morning. My design for my use only. Too many woods to count be will try: aspen, Peruvian walnut, butternut, lace wood, walnut, spalted tamerian, Peru Amarillo, Padauk, blood wood, aromatic cedar, I think that is it.
  2. Far as the look of texture that is strictly the natural gain of the woods. Far as depth I always start out with a solid 4x4 woods and raise or lower the pieces by a quarter of an inch. I have found to get a good 3D image that method works great. I will use 3/8 to 1/2 wood for a backdrop only. There was a Raccoon heads I did last year in the "in progress section" following my process because everyone had been commenting on the depth of my pieces. I agree on the nearing flat pieces out there, the may look nice but they tend to be more segmentation. This piece took me between 20-25 hours - 1/2 the time selecting the wood & cutting and the other 1/2 raising, lowering, shaping, gluing & finishing the pieces. Brian
  3. Roughly 14” tall and 20” long Brian

  5. nice work, have you thought about joining Kathy Wise's pattern group. She does a pattern a month for the groups use only. Patterns have been great. I joined at the start of the group. Brian
  6. I have been stuck in a rut for awhile sense about the latter part of last year doing cute animals. I know that several of you have liked my darker side when i go mythical with dragons and the sort. everyone seemed to like the Grim Reaper that I do. So here is the tease on what will be done in a few weeks. My design for my use only like the Grim Reaper or western dragon. Woods in the piece are Walnut, Peruvian Walnut, aspen, butternut, lace wood, blood wood, Paduck, Bubinga, Aromatic Cedar & Peru Amarillo. 90% is cut, should finish cutting this weekend. Need to finish a Bison before I start shaping. Time to go to that dark piece again. this is near the bottom of the piece. Colors in the pattern are reference only Brian

  12. I sign all my work on the back "Handmade by Brian Pardue month & year" I sell a lot and people seem to be able to find me by my signature through the woodworking stores in NC or through facebook. Before anyone asks, yes I'm still around but haven't been in the shop due to illness. hope to post some things in the coming weeks Brian
  13. I use the flex drum sanders like most everyone else. If you are not accustom to them or is the 1st time using them buy a couple extra sleeves. Until you get used to the pressure needed you will have to replace the sleeves more often. The sleeves last me 6-9 months now. I use the 80 & 120 grit only. For small tight areas I use the small sanding drums on my Fordum power carver. Brian
  14. Thought I would share the link below if anyone is interested, I've known Russ for several years now and he has been trying to get me to do his live show on YouTube:
  15. Starting selling about 4 years ago. Mainly to support my intarsia habit. I do a couple of shows a year, one in May and the other in October and I do 5 or 6 custom pieces for clients a year. Through selling I have been able to redesign my shop and upgrade a lot of my tools including the Hawk I bought just over a year ago. Nice thing about selling my intarsia I don’t have to dip into the household funds. Brian
  16. This is the 1st project completed in 2019 for me. The is the scary version of Kathy Wise’s scarecrow. Several different woods from the scrap pile to make it.
  17. Thanks for all the great comments but I will let everyone know a secret about the “seamless” joints related to the spots. Body parts when cutting I split or take the line. When cutting the spots I leave the line. I fit each spot 1 at a time and do whatever sanding I need to get them to fit. Once the piece is shaped any minor gaps around the spots are taken care of by running medium AC glue over the joint and working the sawdust of the darker wood into the joint. Resand the piece to remove the dried CA glue and sawdust. The joint looks seamless Brian
  18. I had a very bad joint where the aspen meets the bass wood so I ended up using a white was on the aspen
  19. Thanks for all the nice comments Brian
  20. No I had both completely cut before the holidays and just needed to shape them and apply the finish Brian
  21. This was a every easy piece to cut, the layout allowed it to be cut is a few large sections than slice the pieces apart. Shaping was a pain and the time consuming part. Brian
  22. The spots are typical intarsia. I use 4/4 thick wood and at that thickness I don’t see any way to no a typical inlay with angled cuts. These spots were done by cutting on the line on one piece and leaving the line on the other than fitted one at a time. Brian
  23. Finished The Freisian Horse Head from Kathy Wiss's Pattern Group over the Christmas Holidays
  24. Finished the Snow Leopard from Kathy Wise's Pattern group over the Christmas Holidays
  25. nice work on both the pattern and the actual piece
