  3. welcome to the village from North Carolina
  4. I started scrolling about 5 years ago. My family and i went through a horrific event and because of the event, we needed to get some kind of sanity back. I had always had a shop until moving to NC. 5years ago when i starting setting up my shop i did not have the room to build furniture, don't like turning; so i had to find something to do that would be both interesting & challenging. Both my 1st saw about 5 years ago and have not looked back. What I like is if I have had a bad or stressful day at work, I just go home and work in the shop a few hours in the evening whether it is cutting on the scroll saw or shaping intarsia and the stress just goes away. 5years ago the doctors put me on so many different meds it was unreal. Meds to sleep, meds to wake up, meds to function. Through the enjoyment for scrolling I am no longer on the meds
  5. Welcome to the village from North Carolina
  6. I have been watching the progress and this project turned out amazing
  7. i realy like the draw slide idea as well as the way you are locking it in the open position.
  8. I am a mentor for anyone in the Carolina Scroller's Association to learn how to do intarsia. Never had any issues.
  9. they look interesting, I have thought a lot here lately about making a geared clock but have changed my mind an i will be doing a fretwork clock. I odered that pattern today.
  10. very nice pieces, they look GREAT
  11. I am debating on making a couple wooden geared clocks this year, I have been able to find local sources for everything but the brass rods & tubes. Any ideas on where to order from and is there any places you recommend not ordering from.
  12. I bought my DC at Christmas and i am still working on getting it installed. I built a large 5ft X 6ft closest to house the unit an insulated it with 2" thick foam board.
  13. I am installing a "return" vent back in the shop from the dc to prevent any backdrafting. There are not any vents or exhaust duct that would be effected
  14. as promised attached are some photos of my shop. 1st photo is an older photo I took a few years ago just i originally designed the shop Now this is my shop 3-4 years later Still need too build a few more cabinet doors this weekend, but the re-design is coming along great. With the majority of the work completed, I can get make to the scollsaw sense I have a few pieces to make for a couple of clients. Brian
  15. I was blown away today when i received a call from the local Dewalt service in Greensboro NC about my scroll saw. I took it in for some repairs right before Thanksgiving and was concerned with things I had heard about their service work. I pick my saw up shortly before Christmas and used it some through the Christmas holiday. What i had heard was starting to come turn. I was still having the same issue as if it was never fixed. Took it back. Call i received today was my saw was ready, I asked what the problem was and what i was told blew me away. They gave up on trying to fix the issue so instead fixing the saw, they gave me a brand new 788 still in the box. Moral - don't a ways believe what people say about a service company. Now i just have to unpack the saw & set it up after i finish re-designing my shop
  16. Finished building the face frames for the cabinets last night and started cutting the door slabs. Sense i decided to re-design the shop for the collector I am going to put a good finish on the long bench top in the shop. My other 2 bench tops are sealed. The reason the collector is going outside in a closet is because my shop is on the other side of the wall from the kitchen & living room and my wife says it is too loud to remain in the shop. Wayne- I have not redesign my shop sense i set it up over 5 years ago when i started scrolling. I'll take some photos hopefully this weekend & post them before leaving next week. I have a conference to go to in Kansas City.
  17. I bought a a Jet air filtration unit back in November and installed it, but sense i do Intarsia I still have a lot of dust to deal with. So, my Christmas present was a Dust Collector for the shop. My shop is a single car garage. To install the collector I to doing the following: 1. Build an exterior closet on the back of the garage to house the unit do to the noise. - complete 2. Sense i have limited space - walls are wall to wall benches and wall hung open shelves &lumber racks. To get the pipes into the garage, I had to redesign the walls and build new wall hung cabinets & lumber storage. Once I get this completed than I need to paint or seal the cabinets. - in process 3. Than I can run all the piping for the collector and ground it. 4. Need to insulate & wire the closet 5. Still need to paint the exterior closet in the spring. Sense the weather has not been the greatest I have been moving every thing in the shop from 1 end to the other to have some room to move around & work. Oh - the other thing sense i took up a good portion of our small patio for the closet, the wife informed my that i will have to build a deck to make up for the patio. Missed an item. sense the shop has conditioned air I need to duct the air from the collector back into the shop through some kind of filter system To date I spent most likely over a grand for the collector and everything I have done so far. Still have 3 or 4 solid weekends of work before I am completed with the install. I will share some photos of the shop once complete. Collect will be tied into all my equipment in the shop. I can't wait to start using my scroll saw in my newly re-designed shop.
  18. I have the Jet Air Filtration unit, 2 filters, 3 speeds, 3 timer setting or just on all the time. Also comes with a remote. Very quite and works great. cost was just over 300.

  20. welcome from Winston Salem.
  21. I'm self taught in Intarsia. I started out doing Fret work and getting very comfortable with the saw. Kathy Wise's Intarsia for Beginners is a great teaching book. That is the book I used to learn the steps about 5 years ago. With a lot of practice you can do things like the picture before. I have been told that Intarsia is like painting with wood. This piece has over 25 different woods all which are shown in the natural color except for the bright white which is a whitewash.
  22. Jim, You may want to come to the Klingspor Woodworking store in Winston. The Carolina Scrollers Association meets there the second Monday of every month at 6pm except for December this year. We will be meeting again in January. We also demo every Wednesday from 9:30 till around noon. This has also come to be an unofficial meeting. Normally several of the members show up and talk shop with each other and customers. We have a mentors program with several of us opening our shops up to members. There is a wide range of experience in the club from beginners to advanced and from Fret work to intarsia and everything in between. I will be there tomorrow sense I'm on Vacation.
  23. Welcome Jim, I'm Brian out of the Winston Salem area.
