  1. Thanks for all the kind words. This was a fun project that I was pleased with. Some of my projects end up in the trash...never to be seen. This project is on its way to my grandkids. I have used these micro led lights on several projects. You can find them many places but Amazon has quite a few different variations.
  2. This is my Halloween project. It used the scrollsaw, drill press, lathe and some carving. Paint is acrylics with lacquer over the top. The lights are a string of micro led lights with control and battery in base. 20221016_195210.mp4
  3. A number of vacs have the same feature or you can by an auto turn on switch. Because a scroll saw produces mostly very fine dust, I use my HEPA Festool on it and rigid vac on other shop small tools. My router table and all large tools are hooked up to a Oneida dust collector.
  4. I would put the Festool on the scroll saw and use something noise on the router and track saw. Who cares how noisy the vac is with a router or saw??
  5. Rolf.....your Intarsia is some of the best I have seen. The parts really fit together. However, your shaping should be an example to others. Too many people just found the edges but yours are shaped extremely well and bring out a 3D effect.
  6. Travis had a great explanation and example. You generally purchase a pattern for personal use. You can make something for yourself. Selling things made from the pattern violates the copyright unless the creator grants additional usage such as selling things made from the pattern. Will you be caught violating the copyright.... probably not unless it is something like a NFL logo or Disney character.
  7. Just to clarify a bit, I found the following concerning US copyright laws. As of January 1, 1978, under U.S. copyright law, a work is automatically protected by copyright when it is created. Specifically, “A work is created when it is “fixed” in a copy or phonorecord for the first time.” There does not seem to be an issue if you make something from a pattern in a book. However, if you make something from a pattern and then sell it, you may have problems depending on what the creator allows. It is like making a copy of a page in a book for your own use which is ok. However, if you make a bunch of copies to sell, you are potentially violating the copyright. I also did a search to try to understand the issue of altering a copyrighted image. Even if you do alter an image, it probably is still covered by copyright. The idea that if you alter an image it is ok to use seems to be an internet myth. Copyright laws vary depending on country. Since I only make things for myself, all of this makes little difference. However, if I made things to sell, then I would need to understand the law.
  8. I do not care if it is difficult to enforce the copyright or not. I do not care if different creators have different rules. To me, it is not a grey area. Breaking the copyright rules is illegal and more importantly just wrong. Trying to justify breaking the copyright rules is just wrong. We owe it to the creators of the patterns to pay them and encourage them to create more. Some are relying on the income such as Alex Fox. There are too many people today trying to justify breaking the law because they think it is the law is in a grey area. If one does not like a law, then try to get it changed. Personally, I have my name on a number of patents and involved in new technology. I do not want people to steal the things I helped create.
  9. I am sorry but I disagree with some of the thoughts being written. A copyright protects the the creator from someone stealing his work. The same goes for a patent. What I read in this thread is that it is OK to to break the copyright laws because no one will check to find out. Do we do the right thing or do we justify breaking the law because we can get away with it I probably will receive some not so happy comments for this post and that is fine.
  10. Make a small treasure chest and put a parrot puzzle in it.
  11. Age is A good consideration at how long you will use it. The other point with age is health. The scrollsaw makes a lot of very fine dust which is the most harmful and a good real HEPA vac protects my lungs. I do not like just blowing the dust away as the fine dust will float a long time. I could wear a N95 or N100 mask but I find these difficult to deal with. Before I retired, we had to wear N100 masks most of the time and they are tiring.
  12. I use a Festool CT26 on my scroll saw and it goes on and off with the saw. I having been using it for more than five years and no problems. Most of my scrolling is puzzles or Intarsia so I do not turn it on and off like those doing fretwork. I have it plumbed with dust pickups above and below the table and does a good job.
  13. For 1-1/2" thick wood, I use a FD Polar 5 or 7. The best blades for this IMHO are the PS Woods Supersharps. They cut great but more expensive.
  14. I had the same issue with the Harbor Fright lens. With a better lens, the sweet spot is bigger and I have both eyes open with no problem. Everyone's eyes are different so the reaction to different lens will vary. When I do Intarsia, I need to cut on one half of the line to get a good fit. I can not do that without a magnifier.
  15. I had a Harbor Freight magnifier and could not stand it. I got an Ottlite magnifier light with a 3X lens and no issues. I think the quality of the optics is significantly better. Also, my magnifier is not attached to the saw so there is no vibration.
  16. Looks good especially for a first try.
  17. I have a couple Brother laser printers and very happy with them.
  18. Just very weird and smells bad. This will hurt their reputation.
  19. My tomatoes are doing great. Have several grape tomato plants and the wife loves them. It has been hot but in our area gotten good rain. My biggest problem is deer. They are just long legged rabbits and can now the garden down quickly. Two years ago, they chopped off all the Hosta blooms. I put up narrow Mylar reflective tape and that stopped them.
  20. This thread made me glad that I only scroll saw for my own enjoyment. Spent most of my life working to put food on the table and now just do things I enjoy. Worrying about liability insurance or making a spreadsheet of costs are not fun for me. However, if people enjoy that...OK.
  21. Thanks for the article...really enjoyed it.
  22. Could you provide information on the stand....brand and model?
  23. Great workmanship and artistic style. The frame looks great and the floral color choices outstanding.
  24. Interesting story and amazing work !
