  1. Love the deer!!!!!!!!!
  2. Nice cutting. Try a different stain vs the background. You want it to POP out! bb
  3. I went to the candy store today! Got a flyer from the lumber yard that they had 4/4 Red Grandis on sale for $2.46/bf, 6-10" widths x 10' length. Had not heard about Red Grandis before. Common name is Eucalyptus. Native to Australia but also can come from South America. Will make some dynamite dragon puzzles. It was flawless with no knots etc. Also picked up some #2 Walnut for $3.71/bf. Very few knots. I backed the truck up! Probably have a couple years worth of both varieties now. Definitely worth the 100+ mile trip. bb
  4. Rolf, I have heard that most walnut is steamed to get a uniform dark color. bb
  5. cost of repair should only be $249 at a DeWalt Service Center. make sure they look at everything inside too. might need new internal parts which would be covered under the $249 plan. bb
  6. Hope you ordered the modified geometry blades.
  7. Never heard of them. local or national?
  8. I bought about 250 bf of walnut for $400 ($1.60/bf). It had been air dried for perhaps 10 years and is not of the best quality as you can see. Some of the boards were uniform in color but many had color variations. Strangest walnut I have ever seen. At least I didn't give an arm and a leg for the lot. I've attached three pics of puzzles I have cut from this batch of walnut. Now the question: Do you think the puzzles with color variation will sell at the same price as the uniform colored ones? My wife likes the uniform color. I like the color variation as I think it adds interest to the puzzles. Your thoughts?
  9. Excellent John! Impressive number. bb
  10. I switched from FD blades to the Pegas blades some months ago. What a difference on 3/4" hardwoods! Cuts like butter compared tot he FD blades. I have probably 3 gross of the FD blades which I give away to anyone in our woodworking club that wants to get started scrolling. I still use the FD puzzle blade on 1/4" Baltic Birch and haven't found a good substitute.
  11. A few years a go I saw a pattern for a motorcycle which was featured in a magazine. Sure looked like a Harley to me and often wondered how the magazine got away with that. I sell the motorcycle at craft shows and folks buy it because it looks like a Harley. As an aside I spoke with an attorney some time ago and she said even the sound of the Harley is copyrighted/patented - can't remember which. I was amazed at that.
  12. I don't do intarsia but I sand a boat of of puzzles. Band-Aids! bb
  13. My go-to blade as well. I order by the gross from D&D. bb
  14. I just tried the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #5 vs the Pegas Modified Geometry #5 on some very hard cherry. So hard it burned without packaging tape. The Pegas won hands down! If you haven't tried the Pegas blades you are missing out big time. bb
  15. Wish it was near Atlanta airport! Looks like a lot of puzzles to me! bb
  16. I tried those dog puzzles 9 years ago and went on to other puzzles. They did not sell very well for me. I think they were called Woodimals by Jim Sweet. There were other designs besides dogs. I now only carry some of the more popular breeds - dachshund, golden retriever, poodle, terrier, and lab. But NOT in the Woodimal style with the name built in. just stand up puzzles. I had to design the poodle and terrier puzzles and they are Pickens Puzzles originals.
  17. I looked at Star Wars images on the net. I didn't see anything that would lend itself to a wooden stand up puzzle. Any other concepts to look at? bb
  18. Where is the Rooster? 2017 is the year of he Rooster.
  19. Iggy, I also failed at mixing purple!; now I buy from LoRann Oils. Like you I get excess off asap via sponge, paper towel, etc and also use a hair dryer with diffuser to dry the pieces, thus helping prevent bleeding. bb
  20. I've used food colors for 7 years now and I'm still perfecting the technique. Some day I plan on writing up my technique which incorporates some of the ideas above but many more as well. For starters I use only soft maple and it has to be of certain hardness to prevent bleeding. Therefore I take a durometer and test every piece of wood before I buy it. Alcohol was mentioned above but that comes with restrictions on several colors as it interferes with the color quality. For example, mixing alcohol with black will get you green every time! Other colors behave similarly. And don't forget to seal the colors. A child's wet hands on a piece of unsealed colored wood is very interesting; raindrops too. Visit my website to see my colored puzzles which were colored exclusively with food colors. bb www.pickenspuzzles.com
  21. Main Street Festival - apply through ZAPP.
  22. Don, were you the gentleman who stopped by my booth in Franklin, TN last April? I didn't get his name but he also had a booth and some puzzles. Even had the guitar puzzle which I designed and was published in ScrollSaw Workshop & Crafts magazine a couple years ago. bb
  23. Love Judy's books! I have animals, dinosaurs, dragons (fantasy). Can't wait for her next book - heard she was negotiating with Fox for another one. Just look at my website and you will find many of Judy's patterns. Some I have modified slightly. bb
