  1. I have a boatload of puzzles I am donating to the local Toys for Tots charity anyway. Just wondering if there are any puzzle ornaments in the e-book? bb
  2. Some very nice things for the show. Please report back and tell us how the show went. bb
  3. Maybe the #5 has too much kerf for your puzzle. Try their #3. Or #2. All are aggressive blades. bb
  4. My "Go To" blade for 3/4" hardwoods is the #5 modified geometry Pegas blade. I order them by the gross. bb
  5. Tite bond III should work very well as it holds like epoxy! bb
  6. Been using food colors on my puzzles for several years now. I'm still perfecting the technique! bb
  7. I wish a retail outlet would sell a Hawk or Ex in the Atlanta area. Just not going to have one shipped to me. Been there, done that. And it wasn't pretty. bb
  8. Welcome to the Village! I see you are from Pickens, SC. I live in Pickens County, GA! Hence the name of my craft business. Question: Is Pickens, SC named after Governor Pickens or General Pickens. General Pickens of Revolutionary War fame or Gov Pickens of the first state to secede from the Union. I like to think Pickens County, GA is named after the General. bb www.pickenspuzzles.com
  9. Hi PJB. Welcome to the Village. Remember now it takes a Village of characters to do something but I forgot what it is. Please post some of your projects when you get a chance. We love pics! And if you can beat Jerry's cartoons, we wanna see them. bb
  10. Look at my website for the cross puzzle I designed. Feel free to copy it; I don't care. I like it but it doesn't sell a the price I am asking. I probably won't make any more. bb www.pickenspuzzles.com
  11. 6 hrs a day is production mode! Not surprised your DeWalt crapped out but the good news is that it is under warranty and will be fixed. I am in similar mode and just bought another DeWalt after looking at the DeWalt and Jet at Woodcraft in GA. I wanted to see and test the EX but the store no longer carries the EX. I have purchased a Hawk and Hegner in the past and had them shipped to me; Never again. I think UPS/FeDEx treats them rather roughly. Had to return the Hawk (at my expense) because of excessive vibration which they could not solve over the phone. Should have returned the HEgner but I didn't. I think the table got bent as I have a difficult time cutting puzzles out of hardwoods. And the blade changing mechanism is a pain. Plus there is no way the Hegner will accept the Flying Dutchman puzzle blade or a jeweler's blade. I am keeping track of the $$ amount I cut on the DeWalt before it needs repair. Not sure if I can pull off regreasing the bearings as it looks like a royal pain. My plan might be to cut $10,000 worth of puzzles (hopefully) and sell it for $100-200 and then buy a new one again. bb
  12. Recently I spent about an hour test driving the new Jet scroll saw at our local Woodcraft store. I took an assortment of blades. Pegas #3,5,7, Flying Dutchman Puzzle blade, and a jewelers blade from Sloans. I use them all. All the The Pegas blades worked well cutting puzzles from 3/4" cherry after tinkering with the tension a bit. I could not get the Jet blade holders to accept the puzzle blade or the jewelers blade. I looked at the owners manual and it looked like adjusting the set screws on the blade holder might solve the problem but I wasn't going to spend any more time to do that and I'm not sure that Woodcraft would have let me do that anyway. I bought the floor model DeWalt788 which was set up next to the Jet. I need a saw that can accommodate puzzle blades and jewelers blades. I took the DeWalt on the floor because it ran perfectly, unlike some I have purchased in the box and had to return for a variety of reasons. This is the 5th DeWalt I have purchased in 12 years. In my opinion it is the best value for the $$ even though I wear them out after a few years. And one further comment. I will always buy from our local Woodcraft store in Roswell, GA. Very accommodating folks. Several years ago I had my one and only saw in for repairs at the DeWalt Service Center and I needed a saw for an upcoming craft show. Woodcraft was out of stock of the DwWalt 788's so the manager, Robert, loaned me a saw from their classroom training room! Now that is service!!!
  13. This is what I use and love it: http://www.joann.com/ottlite-22w-magnifier-crane-lamp/13129663.html Don't pay the price listed! many coupons available. bb
  14. Interesting comment re the Pegas Modified Geometry blade. That is my "go-to" blade for almost everything. Cuts cherry, walnut, maple, padauk, locust with ease. I prefer the Pegas MG blades over everything else I have tried for 3/4" hardwoods.
  15. I get requests for puzzle boxes all the time; just haven't had time to make any. I took a course at our local Woodcraft years ago and the instructor showed us how to make puzzle boxes without a pattern. ScrollSaw Workshop and Crafts published an article several years ago by the instructor: Karl Taylor. I don't remember the issue#. Should be able to find it by searching or calling Fox Chapel.
  16. velcro
  17. would like to see some pics of your puzzles.
  18. Terrific idea on the coasters! Do you apply a felt backing? What is the finish? bb
  19. You would certainly NOT want to use a FD #9 blade on your patterns!!!!!!!! Impressive teelicht patterns. The final product would involve so much work I wouldn't sell them for anything less than $100USD. But who would pay? bb
  20. I buy Elmer's spray glue by the case from Blick and have had no problems. Then again I spray very lightly and use the same day. bb
  21. Les, Great job on your first puzzle! I like it. Did you design the puzzle yourself? At a Spring show this year I had a request for a Star of David along the lines of my 5 pointed colored star. I like your presentation with the base! You might try coloring with food colors and then sealing with a lacquer.
  22. There is a book by Jim Sweat called "Woodimals". Available from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Woodimals-Creative-Puzzles-ScrollSaw-Woodworking/dp/156523748X I did a few of the woodimal patterns but they didn't sell well. Have since designed a few dog puzzles of my own. check them out at www.pickenspuzzles.com
  23. What is it? bb
  24. The noise is getting worse on my 788. It gets a little better when the wood hits the blade. No vibration to speak of. Still cuts puzzles from 3/4" cherry like a charm. Any idea what is wrong? I'm inclined to just keep cutting until something breaks and then buy a new saw. I've been using it almost daily for 18 months. I haven't had good luck with DeWalt repair service lately. It usually runs OK for 6 months afterwards and then breaks down again. Tempted to look at the Jet or Ex when I need a replacement. bb
  25. Welcome Diana! Glad to have you here. I live in Big Canoe, between Jasper and Dawsonville. If you are in Gwinnett County there is a scroll saw group that meets every Sat AM. bb
