I wish I knew Paul. I get it from pallets at a local tractor supply store. Large mowers are shipped on them. It's usually not very pretty, sort of blotchy, when planed but has good looking sawmill marks on it so I sometimes just sand it and use it for rustic frames, etc. This piece came out with some pretty grain when I planed it. It's extremely hard and dense, not porous at all. The piece here has no stain. I think I'm allergic to it because I get a sore throat and congestion when I breath too much of it. I try to use a mask but I hate them in hot weather. The temptation of free wood is greater than my allergies I guess.
