Dangit. I'm horrible with names.

This is a Charlie E pattern. 3/8" bbply, used Pegas #0/2 MG blades. Backer is stained Minwax Honey, Scrooge is "Natural". Once I get a frame cut, this'll go with the rest of my office "Christmas decorations".

Steve Good - Scroll Saw Challenge + Remembrance Challenge
RabidAlien replied to Travis's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Heh. Top of page 3, Barb Enders commented on Jan 19, and after seeing your previous post I totally read that as "Month Year". No worries!! Coffee and sawdust help put things back into order.- 104 replies

This clenches it. I'm going to have to give resin another try. Where did you get the pattern?
-
I listen to audio books while cutting, and have been known to attach one or two backwards. Usually isn't a problem unless there's text involved. The "S" on Superman's chest kinda stands out if backwards. Oops.

Heh. Started going through photos and found more colorful stuff than I thought I'd done. The lightboxes have color-shifting LED's behind them.

Awesome, thanks for the writeup! I may have to give resin another try. Quick question, though. What heat gun do you use to get the bubbles? Would it be better to pour a layer, de-bubble, pour another layer, de-bubble, etc etc? Or is a standard heatgun sufficient to get all the bubbles out of, say, a 1" thick cutting?

Loving the wolf, dragon, owl, and scorpion!!!! And as Rodney said, every pattern is basically the same, one hole at a time. Some patterns have more holes, and some you'll want to plan out which holes to cut a little in advance so you're not putting undue stress on a fragile bit. Otherwise, you've already discovered the secret of Scrolling. Its FUN!!! You wouldn't happen to have a pattern for the owl or scorpion, would you?

LOVE the bottom three! Gearworks always fascinated me, and I'd love to know where you found the plans for those three?

Haven't made too many clocks, but I did just finish one I found in the Pattern Library. One of these days I would love to make a grandfather clock, cutting the gears, escapement, etc. Plans for those, that I can find, are pricey.

Basically, he was a mob hitman who got out of the game, then gets dragged back in. Two Russian mafia dons are talking about him (while taking shots of vodka with shaky hands) and one is explaining how scary "Baba Yaga" (the Boogieman) is...."he killed this one guy with a pencil. A PENCIL!!! Who does that?"

Been slow at the saw lately, family stuff and allergies combining to suck all energy out of me. Pattern came from the library. Added the pencil holder to the frame because....John Wick. (watch the 2nd movie, if you haven't already)

Very nice! Where'd you get the pattern for John 3:16?

A couple I've done over the years for my wife. Heart-gears was the most fun, I did three different sizes on that one. "Nugget's Place" was a sign I made for her Salcata tortise enclosure. The tortoise has outgrown the enclosure (she's big enough she can't squeeze under the shed or the fence), which is good because the sign did not survive the winter. July 4, 1776 I did for me. Rose box and "Love You" were also done for my wife.

Same here, that adapter works well in my desktop drill press. I think my bit is a (ahem) bit off-centered, but if I put the end on the piece where I need to drill, then start the drill, it puts a hole where I need it and I've been using the same drill bit for a year or more now.

Patton would've approved of the choice of wood. Nicely cut!!!

Steve Good - Scroll Saw Challenge + Remembrance Challenge
RabidAlien replied to Travis's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Cut a lot of Steve Good stuff over the years, mostly due to my love for sarcasm or my wife, one of the two. Sometimes both. Some of my first layered patterns were a Steve Good patterns, and all of the boxes I've made have been Steve Good patterns.- 104 replies

Mornin!!! As others have said, there's no set, hard-and-fast rule regarding what to cut out, dark or light. I've put together patterns and don't use just one or the other, it kinda depends on the picture. Most pattern designers will put on the pattern "remove black" or "remove white", or put a red border around what needs to be cut (with a small enough pilot hole, just follow the line and you can't go wrong). When I'm looking at a pattern that I like, I'll find an "island", a spot of one color that's not connected to anything around it. For most patterns, unless you're doing segmentation, the islands are going to be the color you want to remove. "Peninsulas" are just like the geographic feature, they're usually sections of the pattern that were floating, but integral to the pattern, so they're connected back to the rest of the main pattern by a thin "bridge". Here's an example of islands, and what I look for in a pattern to determine what to remove:

LOVE the gear-work!!!!

Very nicely cut! Love the live-edge wood used for this, very wild and rustic. Although part of me saw the subject line and thought "oooo...someone has a pattern of WW2 submarines on the prowl!!!" ...I may need more coffee. Nice explanation on the paws! My first thought was "cut the sides straight, cut scrap pieces to fit in the bottom of the holes and then drop the pads/claws back in so they're scrap-pieces higher than the rest". I tend to forget that my saw table tilts.

Handmade Gifts Scroll Saw Challenge 2022
RabidAlien replied to Travis's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Thanks!! I stack-cut two of them. Wife took one look and said "not in my house." Our senses of humor are....different. I have a co-worker in another department that shares a very similar sense of humor, though, so it went to her on Tuesday. She'd flown back in from an office move/setup, plane arrived around 1am Tuesday morning, and her boss said "tough, come in to the office." I'd left it on her desk as I was working on some other tickets, and I think she had it hung up before she even took her jacket off. Can't say as how I blame her. LOL -
Sorry, y'all! Work's been a royal nightmare (ongoing), plus hormonal 13-year-old-daughter and various other family issues, its a miracle I get a chance to hit the saw at all during the week. I think I have a couple of other clock patterns from that section of the Library, as well. I'll try to be better at posting creds/links.
