  1. I'm having the problem with a John Wayne portrait I'm working on. I'll see if there are any areas I can stick a couple of brads in when I finish my coffee. If not I'll try that on the next one. I may also try the hot melt instead of blue tape on the next one. I've been doing hardwood or one off ply but want to start making copies of stuff to sell this winter. Making 3-4 at a time beats the heck out of making singles! That gets me to thinking...very dangerous...do any of you stack cut something like 1/8" or 1/4" hard Maple or Walnut? If so is there any difference in the procedure between that and 1/8" or 1/4" BB ply? Great ideas guys! Thanks!
  2. Is that the same as a brad nail gun?
  3. When you use hot melt...do you put it all over...or around the edges? I thought about using some in the middle, but wouldn't it bust the tight stuff when you took it apart (I've never tried it) ? How do you separate it?
  4. Good point Jerry, I've never tried cutting it that way.
  5. Do you wrap the whole stack...or just the edges? I may have used a piece of BB with a bow in it...or maybe 2 pieces.
  6. That's a great cutting!!
  7. I'm trying to do some other types of cutting, and I'm using 1/8" . I've tried stacking 3 together and taping the edges with blue painter's tape. I can cut the tight stuff fairly close to the edges ok...but when I cut in the middle it vibrates and breaks off. I can cut a single 1/4" without a problem, never tried stacking 2 pieces of 1/4" though. Do you guys that stack cut a lot use 1/8" or 1/4"? OK...some of you "prolific stack cutters" please give me a step by step setting up to cut and taking it apart.
  8. Awesome job Marg !
  9. Google “Ocooch Hardwood”. Good price and fast service

  11. I framed Charlie Daniels today. I picked up a 11" x 14" frame at Wally World the other day and was just going to cut the window out to fit with an X-Acto knife. I've been wanting to start building my own frames for my art and other stuff...so I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a Logan mat cutter, a rig to insert V nails in frame corners, and a rig to inert points and brad nails to hold it all in the frame. It was fairly easy to use the mat cutter, and it made nice 45* beveled cuts to enlarge the window. I used black card stock for a backer to keep the thickness down. I could get use to doing this all the time. Those of you that frame your art: 1 Do you buy frames. New or garage sale finds? 2 Do you make your own frames? Details on wood thickness, rabbit depth, any other helpful tips? 3 Do you use glass or plexi-glass? 4 I cut the mat to cover 1/16th of the piece on all 4 sides...is that enough or is it better to have 1/8th or 1/4 "overhang"? 5 What do you use to "fill in" from the mat to the back cover? Normally 1/8th or 1/4 thick wood. Lots of questions...sorry. This is just another facet of the obsession/hobby that I need to learn to evolve.
  12. Great work! What a voice he had.
  13. Thanks Dan! This one coming out OK inspired me to try spirals more. So I ordered some from Denny today!
  14. Thanks Kevin! Yea, I thought it looked pretty cool also. I might have to frame this one.
  15. He surely will! Thanks for the complement! I started the first cut with a Pegas #1 MG that was in the saw. Then I thought I would give "the Devil's blade" aka spiral another try. Usually it eats everything it touches and I throw it in the trash, but I got it to behave...mostly. I only had the 2 blades left so I cut the tight stuff first and when the last blade broke the only thing left to do was his coat. I'll order some today. The only ones I've tried were 2/0. Is there any other sizes that work well? Or is a larger size easier to learn spiral cutting?
  16. He was a well known country singer. And a fantastic fiddle player. If you like country music go on You Tube and listen to a few of his songs. Thanks for the complement!
  17. I cut this Russ Beard pattern today. 1/8 Baltic Birch ply. First time I cut something with Pegas 2/0 spirals that didn't end up in the trash! But I only had 2 blades left, that I had abused before, and they broke. Finished Charlie's coat with a #1 Pegas.
  18. Glad to hear you're ok. I hear ya on the shows. I was going to do some summer shows...but that went down the toilet. I took a couple months off from cutting, just a few orders. But I've started to work on winter show stock. Got a Schnauzer pattern from your site the other day, did that and a dozen others. Take care.
  19. Just finished cutting this for a client. I showed him some finish samples today, and he really likes the Minwax Early American. To get in all the letters and a smooth finish (as much as possible) I think I need to dip it. I'll pick up a quart as I don't have enough in the shop, and dip it in a tin pie plate. I normally use Minwax Pre-Stain to help smooth out the top coat. Any other tips or tricks to a stain dip? Never tried dipping with stain, always just brushed it on. I glued up the three pieces of the card holder...and left the base and big piece separate in case I needed to dip in a smaller container. Dip first, then glue up when dry...or glue up, then pour the stain over the complete piece over a pan...? After stain is applied and dry would you top coat ? With what?
  20. Sounds great Scott!! I'll watch it later tonight, just came in for dinner and a beer . I'm working on a Charlie Daniels portrait! I was just thinking about you the other day. Haven't heard from you...how are you getting along over there?
  21. Love it! Was it hard to cut? I have that pattern but haven't had the time to do it yet.
  22. I ended up putting a couple drops of blue Locktight ( the cheep generic one) on it, worked it in a little, and out a prop on it (after I set the right spot) to dry overnight. I was VERY careful making a small adjustment...and so far it works great! I'm being extra cautious to not bump it! We'll see how long it lasts before I use a couple more drops.
  23. I get that also Les, but a much smaller pile...with a blower on my King. But I get it with different woods, and not all the time. I can even be cutting a line and get it for a couple of inches then turn a corner and it's gone. I just figured it had something to do with the piece of wood, maybe the clear shelf paper/pattern printed on a label, or humid/dry air in the shop. In other words...I have no idea!!!
  24. Kevin it sounds crazy...at first, but I did pull the saw out about a foot yesterday and push it back. My saw sits between two benches I built. The one on the right is lower than saw table, it's for fly and jig tying. The one on the left is higher than the saw table. It's my general work bench at 36". When I lay out several animal puzzles on a poplar board I need to pull out the saw to cut them apart to a manageable size, then push it back in place. At the winter shop on the border I only had a folding table, it is lower than saw table, so I never moved it till I packed it in the 5th wheel to head north. You'll love the Blue Tooth! I have a Bose Blue Tooth that I've had for years , upper left corner of photo, it's great to control volume and play list/etc from phone right beside me. Also my new window A/C! Just put it in a couple of days ago. Only 6,000 BTUs, but it's the largest I could get in the window...lol. With the spray foam insulation it really helps though.
