  8. thanks lol still havent figured out the best way to try to do the expoxy reisn but i have the other compound cut s done and the layered snake just has to be glued together and then the polyurthine on it.....will put up pictures when there done.... have to get off the computer now. will try to look at you guys stuff soon
  9. thank you lawson56. I love doing the compound cuts and praticing carving on them. carving has always been my first love but until the compound cuts i didnt have any patterns and since i cant draw...lol a do the layered animals a lot to for the same reason....iv found sawdust and glue makes great hair and fur or snow and such depending on what im doing....gives it a more 3 demisaule look.... i hope to get better as i pratice. and being able to use the scraps for pins and things give me more finished items and less trsh lol
  10. The pictures didnt come out to well but these are the compound santas'mrssantas and a witch i still have to paintthe belt buckles on the santas . I used sawdust and glue to make the hair and fur on the santas. A friend gave me some expoy resin to try working with. Now i have used it years ago on flat projects could some one tell me the best way to put it on these compound cuts? when there all finished i'll repost new pictures. only 2 of the santas are the compound cut, the rest i made out of the scraps from the compound cut, these will be used as magnets and perhaps as over lays on other projects. some might be put on crafts made from other meduems.... or turned into pins. I still have some other compound cut pieces to paint and im working on painting a fret work peice to. and i still have the layered snake to paint and put together.
  11. Thank you jim. my mosic pattern book then has the pattern for both sesgmention and mosic. the mosic pattern would be using different woods to make up the picture. using different colored woods, but also has the pattern cut from one piece of wood such as pine and then staining or painting each piece of wood before glueing everything together. in my segmention book the patterns tell me to cut the pattern in different pieces rounding over the edges a bit and then glueing the picture back together on a backer board. both books have instructions for using different colord woods and for cutting it out with just one type of wood such as pine and then staining or painting the pieces before glueing it back together on a baker board. i think thats why i got confused. I wish the pattern books would have explined each method and what they were called would have saved on some confusion.
  12. i hope everyone had a wounderful christmas! My youngest daughter got me a fantasy and medieval mosaics wood pattern book. i also have a segmented wood pattern book. Now after having read the instructions in the mosaics pattern book they seem to be done the same way....i'll have to dig out my segmentein pattern book and reread it but from what i remember after doing the segmentaions they seem to be done and finished the same way. is there a difference im not seeing or that im missing? id like to know before i get a pattern out and start making it as i want to be sure im doing right....going to reread the mosic instructions again to try to find what iv missed Thanks for the information and help in advance
  13. Thank you everyone, this has been very helpful!! yes we just used flat black house paint since we had that on hand. like 2 big cans. i will tell spike i need to get some gloss lacquer to finish it. its not hard to paint but that dosnt mean i want to have to repaint it any time soon lol
  14. humm never had any trouble with things hanging stright but i can see how it couldbe a proublem....i forgot to mention that with bigger pieces i use two.....i also forgot to mention i take tin snips and snip a small part for the nail or what ever to rest in. Yes it does take a little more time but i have so many of them that time is not really a factor for me. lol and i do like to recycle when ever i can. that being said i do also use the saw tooth hangers from time to time depending on what im making to hang.
  15. Thank you everyone and yes he did love it. I hope to have more pictures to put up soon. I do a lot of cutting in the summer and put the things in a box to be finished in the winter. My wood shop dosnt have heat and doing it this way helps keep the electric bill down . Thats why i havent put a lot of new things up. I hope thats ok, if not just let me know.
  16. I dont know if any one will be interested or not but figured i put this up just in case. Im real big into recycling. Instead of buying the wood hangers all the time i use the pop tabs from soda bottles... all you have to do is take off the thin part that covers the hole and then you can nail them to back of plaques and pictures , just mmake sure you leave a little bit over the edge or you can bend the back a little so a nail or what ever can be slid into the hole ..... just an idea if anyones interested
  17. Thank you. Its not like its suppose to be.....i have to get back into cutting letters again...but i fixed it up best i could.
  18. thse are great ideas!!! THANKS!! have to get off now
  19. well here it is all finished, my sons dad by day gamer by night from steve good. I had messed up the lettering when i was cutting it out, but most people who know me i seldom throw anything away that i might be able to use. i turned it into a picture frame. It holds a small school picture. since i dont have a small school picture of my grandson so i inserted one of my sons small school pictures she he knows where to put the picture. we printed out the dad by day gamer by night on the computer and then cut 2 peices of bb to size and glued the words on to it and then glued the words on the wood to the backer board. i left it unfinished as i dont know how well the print would hold up if i put polyurithine on it. now the back peace for hanging the pictures is made from the plastic that comes with a new pair of earrings. we cut the top off and lued it to the back leacing the lip in tack. then i slide some clear fishing line into the grove and put a dab of glue on the earring holder thing so the fishing line wont slide out. i used peaces of dowl for the frame....now i wont be on too much anymore because the bowtox shots are not working as well as it used to so im constently in mild migrine pain. i had hoped wearing an eyepatch over my right eye so it wouldnt get the light from the monter screen in hopes that it would prevent the migrine from gettig worse and its helping some but not enough i will try to look at all your projects one at a time inbetween the projects i am hoping to be able to do at least until the pain gets to bad again for me to craft....im hoping it wont get that bad again and if i work slowly and take lots of breaks ever 5 -10 minutes or so the pain wont get to bad at least not for awhile....oh well at least you wont have to read my rattleing on and on in far to long posts as often now... i hope every one has a VERY MARRY CHRISTMAS!!
  20. Ok i hope someone can help me with this because i dont do furnture very often and i hope to make this rocker look really nice. Not so important when i did the first one. Now after the paint is dry what should we use as a finish? polyurthine? or iv heard people talk about schalac....is that a finish or a stain iv never used it. My ex just always got me polyurthine to finish my crafts with and we didnt finish the old one id kind of like to finish this one as were using a basic flat black paint we had in the gragrage
  21. well today im taking a little break from my crafting for a little while. Last week we stoped at the hospic thrift store after my drs appoment and i found a wounderful wooden rocking chair! And it only cost me 18.00 dollars. i was so excited and told spike i wanted to get it....welll since i already have a wooden rocking chair he wasnt to keen on the idea. I do love my old rocking chair but it is not really comfortable for me any more... even with the seat and back pillows i made for it. Now when we got it i was pg with my oldest son. My ex husband bought it for me so i could rock my baby to sleep....and of course it had just a lovely little creek when i rocked. Just perfect for a young mother. I used that old rocking chair to rock all 3 of my children when they were babies and as they grew older it sat in the corner of there bedroom as mommys reading chair. The kids always knew if they played with it mommy would take it out and story time would be a lot shorter lol.... So during the day my 2 daughters put there favorit dolly and teddybear to sit when they werent playing with them. At bedtime teddy and dolly got in bed with there mommies and listend while i read to them and that creek still helpped to put them to sleep. i did read to my son when he was younger to but his pet monster sat in it during the day. lol I do love that old chair....but it was gotten to help me stay awake with my babies lol i never sat in it for very long. and i will miss it to..but im giving the old one to my son John for christmass. not sure if i'll leave the seat and back cousions on it or not as it was made from an old snuggle up i used to wrap myself and john in when he was a baby...such a loving memory. im thinking i'll take the two and make it into the seat cousion for my new rocker as this one has flat slates for the back instead of the round dowl type the old one has. now you might wounder just what im doing to the rocker if its so perfect. Well im or actualy mostly spike is painting it black. I dont know where it came from but it was painted pink and purple! lol and it did look nice but dosnt really fit in a house with 2 old people lol now if the kids were still little id of left it....also my oldest daughters favorit color is purple and my youngest daughters favorit color is pink lol with it painted black maybe they wont fight over who gets it when i die. lol i took a picture of it before being painted and ll take another picture of it after its all painted. I intend to carve a dragon at the top of the back but first i have to find a way to put the pattern on it. carbon paper lines dont show up on purple or black....i figure i could use my dress makers white pencle to put the pattern on it....but since i cant draw i have to figure out some way to transfer a pattern onto the wood. I carved the top of the old oneto but i just carved out the printed design that was painted on it. IF i ever get the pattern on wood not sure if i should just leave the carved part the color of the wood or paint it....but there i go putting the cart before the horse again lol first lets just get it painted!!! pictures will follow when the paintings all done i'll put one up of the old rocker to...sentamentle me i need at least a picture of my old rocker if i cant keep both of them!!! lol
  22. ok heres the thing, i have my layered rattle snake all cut sanded and ready to paint....but im not sure about the colors.....so i decided to look at some pictures of rattles snakes. i never knew there were so many different kinds and colors of rattle snakes!! proubly because i dont get close enough to ANY kind of snake to see what color they are. i tried looking up the colors they recomend in the pattern to paint the snake but there the colors dune autun and bambi have several different colors for each so how the heak am i supoose to know which of the colors listed for each one im suppose to use? perhaps someone here could give me some ideas ....like the body is......the dimanods are......and the belly is such iand such a color..i could really use some help with this
  23. i think everone has a pet peeve or two and this is mine....you see im 5 foot nothing and weight about 130 lb where as spike is 7 foot 2 and i dont know how much he weighs but i do know hes a LOT stronger then i am. now i dont really mind if he uses my tools.....thats what there there for but you would think after 17 years he would have learned that WHEN he uses my tools he MUST untighten them when he s done! ha ha he dosnt scroll but he does build things from time to time and i get it sometimes it just easer to use the scroll saw to cut things and the drill press to boar holes. and of course he has to use different blades and drill bits no proublem.....and im a fairly laied back person but it annoys the dickens out of me when i go to scroll and have to go find him to take his blade out of the saw or the bit he was using out of the drill. for some reason he has trouble remembering " hand tight" for him is NOT "hand tight for me!! " lol at least this time he was still home and i just haad to wait until he finished eating to get his blade out of the saw so i could put mine in. lol working on a few compound cut peices right now and i have to look up the colors on the instructions for the layered snake im making....i also have have a fret farm seane to finish and the dog groomer wall hanging to cut out. at least i have all the christmass orders done and out on time .
  24. lol well i think spike would like it better IF I DID MORE OF MY WORK IN THE SHOP or in my craft room lol but after almost 16 years hes kind of given up on that idea lol Now hes just glad i dont sand things in the living room anymore lol.... Hes given up on idea that the ariea around my livingroom chair will ever be clean ( uncluttered) lol i always have 2 baskets full of supplies around my chair for the 2 or 3 craft projects im working on that are not wood lol and i still have the sewing machine in the livingroom......i havent told him yet then when im fiished sewing and put the sewing machine away i'll be getting out the embroidery sewing machine lol i have a ton of things i want to emborider lol and no i SIMPLY CAN NOT work on just one project at a time!!!! lol nor can i EVER be ORGINIZED!!! lol poor man i dont know how he puts up with me lol and of course his grage is all nice and neat with a place for everything and everything in its place!! where as mine are pretty much a total shambles all lthe time. lol
  25. These are just some things i working on in wood right now. The first 2 pictures are of wood papper dolls. the first one is after i glued the pink bodies on to the wood. the second one shows the how the hair face underware and shoes will look once there glued onto the body after the bodys are glued to the wood. once this is done the velcrow is glued to the bodys at the waist sholders and heads and the other side glued onto the felt cloths, that way little ones can just stick the felt cloths on to the bodies. i had to wait a ittle bit before i could glue the felt parts as i didnt have the right kind of glue.... now that i have it i hope to get the velcro glued to the bodies and cloths soon to make up each set. i made 4 boys and 4 girls so need to make a ton of cloths .....the last 2 pictures are of the 2 layered snakes im making. iv got all the pieces cut out sanded and ready to glue together but i have to make the markings on the snake bodies first and then paint them. i wish i was a better drawer as i have to draw the lines and dimanns free hand but we'll see how it goes....i wasnt sure how to carve the faces.....other then just rounding the sides the only things i know about snakes is 1) i dont like them !! and 2) i dont care what you say they ARE NOT MORE SCARED OF ME THEN I AM OF THEM!!! lol im not sure how to paint them either as the instructions say they to paint the body dune , autum and bambi? now what the heak kind of colors are dune autum and bambi? I think there rattle snakes so i'll google rattle snakes and as much as i HATE to even look at a picture of a real snake look to see if i can tell what colors they are. i also have a small bowl of compound cut figures cut out in a bowl waiting to be sanded and carved as best i can and my dragon house sign to carve yet.... there on the list lol and as i always told my mom and now tell spike as long as it on the list were ok, lol bug me about something on the list and it might never get done!!! lol and of course im still working on my sewing and crochet projects and i have several empty soda bottles waiting for me to turn them into knob houses.... not to mention that big tree stump outside waiting for doors and windows lol so even though my pictures are few and far between im still crafting !!! lol spike keeps telling me id get more things done if id just stick to one project at a time and hes proubly right but i get board when im only working on one project at a time lol and besides its more fun to do it this way lol and now its time to make some plarn while i watch marshal law and the pretender.
