on a break from scroll saw and stick figures, tested positive for flu this morning.

When I make one for someone on occasion I do it freehand no patterns but I still draw each piece on paper if the pieces interlock at any point so it's snug not doing anything the next few days woke up with 101 temp this morning guess watching the grandkids when they are sick caught up to me my wife said if I sit in my grandkids cardboard castle she would bring the saw inside for me thinking most of the dust would stay inside the castle i need a break anyway temp down to 99.6 so meds are kicking in everyone enjoy thevweekend

Yeah I usually trace but not going to fret over 30 or 40 sheets of paper I used a fd psr 7 blade and snapped it after 35 figures

For my daughters next fundraiser at school I'm making a load of these stick figure pieces ive made 100's of them in the past mostly with the bandsaw still need sanding and some need floppy ears to be attached last years fundraiser was a huge success with the birdhouses and feeders she sold every unit I hope she sells a lot of them to staff as I told her I can make as many as she needs for the actual sale normally I trace them onto wood but this time I glued paper pattern so everyone of them is same to mix and match species Spanish cedar walnut poplar so far will use sapele and cherry as I move along she said 36 sets would be fine as I'm making her some other things like planters also since it's first week of may sale msde 18 sets so far ina couple of days but I know sanding will take some time snd my scraps are building rapidly i I did not rummage through scraps for these just lazy but all scrolling projects in future will first be sought after from scraps first if possible

One of Steve good downloads its some segment work and I won't be doing anything this small again my fingers don't like it I used plastic eyes and nose as I have a lot from the layered animals I make i I found some upholstery nails and they looked ok so I made them the buttons its not finished yet still need to sand base and cover sides to smooth a bit and then spray some lacquer Here's where I'm at It's rare I use paint but I took a paint pen and made the tie red it's sapele and hard maple used a 2/0 blade for it and cut the sides with a 5 ine Pegas one flying dutchman

It's a switch from building furniture as my back doesn't like me anymore and when I start lifting sheets of plywood or 12/4 boards my back yells at me and these projects are like wood turning can finish something in one day

I'm afraid if I sanded it down smooth my daughter will ask me to make 15 of them i started cutting his teddy bear box that includes a bit of intarsia also

Not bragging about this simple pattern just showing it nearly finished steve good download took me a bit over an hour to mill down hard maple to 1/4 inch and cut pattern out im getting a little better at selecting blades used a 2 blade and had no problems even on some tight turns I'll stack cut 2 more tomorrow or this week when it's warm enough to get out there I will spray lacquer from rattle can after red paint cures by tomorrow Simple and quick and I'm having fun

i can only hope one day I will be able to do something like that with my scroll saw....I am new to this, not woodworking. that piece is beautiful. as far as selling it, I dont think most woodworkers selling their work actually get paid for their time and effort. woodworking for a living will most likely leave you poor. unless you have a wife that works or some other form of income, woodworking for profit is very difficult. minimum wage where I live, suburbs of nyc, usa, is around 20 bucks or soon will be. most woodworkers I see at shows dont make that much in the end, adding in cost of goods, cost of the booth at shows, plus most important time spent. not to mention the cost of maintaining a shop, supplies, etc. I wish you luck and success, I have no idea how many hours were put into this piece, but I believe there might be a buyer out there that is willing to pay for your talent, hopefully you two will connect eventually.

Wow maybe it isn't the blade drift at all maybe I discovered what the problem is need a little less caffeine

i should mention, I have ocular myasthenia gravis....by now its most likely generalized myasthenia, but after 20 or so minutes, I have to take a few minute break and let my eyes rest and look elsewhere because focusing on that line, my eyes start to get out of focus as the muscles start to get tired. Id do much b etter if the blades were a different color than the lines on the pattern. I might start printing patterns with red or green ink. thanx for the answers so quick....Ill give some thought to moving my bench a bit when I see the piece is off center on the blade. never thought of that. I just thought I was right hand dominant and tend to push harder with right hand, and I even tried using the left hand sometimes to guide the pattern through the blade.

denny i have a bunch of pegas blades, and its no different, Ive tried changing out to 4 different blade companies, pegas, fly dutchman, and the pack that came with the saw, not sure which brand, and a friend from another site sent me all his blades as he doesnt scroll anymore. I find little difference between pegas and flying dutchman with blades that are similar number and tpi, the only difference I find on wood less then 1/2 inch thick is how aggressive the pegas blade is. I had some trouble with the cuts moving a bit too fast and went off lines, so its an adjustment of feed. as a matter of fact, Im pretty sure it was you I ordered them from?

thats exactly what I did today, i decided to see how Im feeding, so I stopped guiding and let the wood move straight. ive had a bottom blade clamp not sit right already, bent the blade immediately, learned a lesson

btw, I tried tightening tension, loosening tension, either way didnt help me, and I try to pay alot more attention to my feeding rate but nothing seems to help me, if this is normal, Im ok with it, as all my cuts have been fine

Im getting straight cuts, all parts fit fine. but I cant seem to feed straight as I notice whenever I finish a cut, or most of the times, Im getting the blade popping? back into position. seems i push the piece a b it to the right each time, and as much as I over correct my technique, the blade seems to be moving to the side....hard to explain, the blade cuts perfectly on the line, but when I remove the wood from saw, seems I was bending the blade ever so slightly and the blade pings back to perfect sitting position. how to I compensate for my feeding the piece a bit off. very tough to explain. I know when I remove a piece there should be no sound, but I get that ping when the blade pops straight again, it doesnt seem to affect the cut at all, I checked, cuts are square, I put pieces against table saw blade with blade up and see its perfectly cut with no gap between piece and blade. I cant seem to feed it straight once I get going on a long cut. anything I can do? hope I explained it correctly, almost as if the blade is drifting but I know its not, its just the feed is off and the blade pings back after long cuts, so maybe Im drifting not the blade.

I did order an intarsia book, forgot the author, but this week I will start cutting even though the goldfish starter project doesnt seem like intarsia to me since its all one piece of the same wood, but Ill make it anyway. will post here when finished as of today, Ive made approx 42 give or take one or two of the xmas trees. Ive given away almost 20 already but Im saving the rest for a school fundraiser, my daughter is a teacher and does small fundraisers for student council or pta. Ill give her a bunch of the doggie puzzles or person and dog figures, just so she can raise money, I make alot of those. i also figured out how much exactly it cost me to make thos small trees with the small ornaments. i use 5/4 stock, 12 inches wide, slice the wood in half, so I can get 3 units on each 12 by 12 piece, cut into half inch thickness, I get six from both pieces. ornaments are from dollar tree, the small ornaments are 1.25 for 15 the gold hooks are ten cents each from amazon. figuring bf prices, I can make most of the species for under 1.60 per unit. stain I have so much of old stain that I wont use on furniture but it works fine for these small pieces. no top coat. seems they are a big hit as the ones I gifted out people want to purchase extras for family members and friends. I think 10 tp 12 dollars each is fair, I can cut and assemble 6 per hour, not including staining

Still practicing made a bunch of these Xmas tree with ornament can't stand working with oak but this is a good way to get rid of it trying different blades and just having fun Still need to oil the leaning tree but need to turn out a few more so I'll do all the staining at once these might be a fundraiser for the school before Xmas

well, i took a look at the members gallery here and alot of the work done. Ive come to the conclusion that at just about 70 years old, not in the greatest shape, I will run out of time before I come close to the skill needed to get something relatively close to what I saw on members posts. Im not discouraged, Im just being realistic. whether it be fret scrolling work or intarsia, maybe I should have taken up golf or pickleball instead.

i dont change shoes when I come in from garage. it gives my wife a reason to yell at me. not that she cant find a reason, but as we approach 46 years of marriage, shes letting it slide a little more these days. she has one spare bedroom completely used for her quilting, and then uses the other spare bedroom to lay out her work if she doesnt want to put it on the design wall. many years ago, when I first got my lathe, which I no longer have, I set it up one of the spare bedrooms before we redid it. it lasted 2 days, she threatened me, so I said ok, it goes into the garage, but it was nice thinking about turning in a nice warm place when its 15 degrees outside now I have some space heaters out there, but when it gets too cold outside, I just dont woodwork.

i used two boards of hardwood both 3/4 inch this morning. made large puzzles, still for practice....today I had my new pegas blades, so I first tried a number 5 and within a minute it snapped. could be my fault, maybe it didnt sit well, then switched to a number 7 blade and finished the cutting. not sure if it was better then the dutchman blade, but it was aggresive, and seemed to let me cut faster. not sure why, Im guessing it has something to do with the pegas scroll saw but the ends of the blade are notched, loaded into my saw fine, just didnt understand why they were notched. Ill keep practicing with different blades. I think between the pegas, dutchman and the ones that came with the saw I can make an easily enough decision in the future which is my go to for hardwoods etc..... Im going to buy my first intarsia plans, something as easy peasy as I can find, give it go in a couple of weeks when I get home.
