Allen levine replied to Allen levine's topic in General Scroll Sawing
I need to clean up some fuzzies on the green painted part will wait for a complete cure then wipe them off -
Practicing my unsteady hands used a 2/0 fd blade for 1/4 inch and broke or bent 3 blades i used a 9 blade for 1/2 inch pieces base and stem all pieces again came out of bins i know the pattern uses the same species for stem since it's part of tail but I used what looks like white oak or ash and sapele scraps for fish inhave a boatload of poplar from all the other projects so made the grass with that took me approx 3 hours to cut and sand Used some old stain and I routed a small curve around base im still struggling with tight turns even with 2/0 blade i ended up using a 3 blade to finish the 1/4 inch pieces much easier for me

thanx for kind comments. I downloaded a steve good pattern just now, probably start it tomorrow if I dont have to pick up my grandson. hes 4 and hes fascinated by the workshop and the tools, but the loud tools bother his ears so he stands outside and looks in....he goes into the house and takes out his plastic work bench with all the tools and gets busy immitating me. Im almost sorry I sold off my mini lathe as Im sure in a few years I could have taught him pen turning as I did two of my nephews.

After our week in the Amish area of pa i saw a lot of pieces of art this one caught my eye because it gives me scroll/fret practice the one I saw was black metal on rough oak I picked up a piece of 3/8 inch ply that was the base top of a pallet that had tiles on it insaw it next to dumpster and the contractor told me take it all but with my back I only took the 4x4 piece of plywood it had some stains but I cut the best piece of it had a lot of shorts from cedar decking I used for my sons outdoor furniture and some bird houses so I used them as a back its raised a bit with 1/2 inch dowels its basically finished but I want to clean up the black painted surface and spray some polyurethane have a look the original is also shown

So I've made hundreds of stick figures both on bandsaw and hegner many are related to certain people and their profession or hobby ive made teachers with students foot doctor a gazillioon people with all breeds of dogs cats birds etc not wanting to get started on a new project I wasted some time making a stick figure of me and my hegnet laugh because it's pretty funny i even mounted casters on the bottom of the stool(black push pin with stem cut down)

I spent most of yesterday sorting through mountains of scraps and managed to let go of a basketful sorted different species into different bins moved all lumber and made the lumber rack neater today I will move all tables and do a complete and thorough vacuum and clean then wax all metal surfaces i had to bring in everything so it wouldn't get knocked over or scraped while I clean I have pvc birds next to the boiler and in my den behind the tv unit Elmo's are just sitting in the living room where they won't get dirty or scratched my daughter texted me last night after I gave her the final count and she said they are going to raise a lot of money she said they were putting out the stick dog and person and calling it awesome pawsome raffles she figured she will sell most of them before they offer raffle tickets and that would be better as I don't want to have to make more if they get alot of raffle tickets sold

I'm not an artist just a weekend wood warrior I can make planters and spray them but trying to simulate a hairy furry doggie is out of my league i I can respray them brown and someone else can paint face it can hold an 8 to 9 inch potted plant
-
Popped my last thin blade on my bandsaw hoping I can make the last cuts on the Hegner

6 flamingos are ready to go along with 2 Elmo birdhouses and 24 sets of stick figures some of which were sold already i I don't think it's up for auction or sale till end of April or beginning of may but between travel and appointments I want to make sure all is finished on time I'm working on doggie planters
-
Made a lot of progress today even though I still feel the congestion left over from the flu decided to walk to store for something but cold windy air triggered coughing so I just went back into the garage/shop and kept working all pvc birds have second coat of both colors and cut all pieces for the first doggie planter want to see how planter comes out before I cut another one lots of sanding and painting still but I'm good where I finished today way ahead of schedule(I have to make a schedule in my head so I set goals )

This was last years fundraiser and it was a total sellout and I had to make an extra 3 birdfeeders and several birdhouses to those that just wanted to purchase them outright
-
I don't have many pics of all the pvc animals I've made but here's a couple I found party flamingos were well liked and the see saw flamingos were funny the giraffe was one 6 inch pipe 10 feet and it cost 60 bucks during pandemic I'm sure it's over a 100 now used to get a lot of horns beeping when I was Driving around with the birds in backseat as I delivered them the momma and baby ducks were very popular and I made many sets for friends and family and even sent patterns to several other woodworkers to make for their gardens i taught 3 people how to make pvc birds not that it was a difficult thing but they were clueless and now make beautiful birds and one guy sells them
-
-
I'll add that the 3 inch pvc pipe 10 footer is now 38 dollars at home depot for years I paid 18 dollars disgusting each will be attached to brick paver that cost 2.00 bucks each at Home Depot garden center I use tapcon screws sprayed same color as foot depending on what color I paint birds but these 6 will all be pink with black feet and beaks
-
I'm waiting on pink paint for the pvc flamingos these will be the approximate 186 of them I've made since 2019 I gave away anonymously 120 of them in all colors to nurses and other hospital workers in my town and some to people who lived close enough as a thankyou during pandemic for their service I'm still struggling with remnants of the flu so I can't get myself into full mode yet this is the last therapy dog the school had and I made 6 planters that sold within an hour when she put them up for sale fred is retired now and I'm hoping he's enjoying Florida
-
I stopped at 24 because I have other items to include Those 24 sets i made a flamboyance(had to look up what a group of flamingos are called) of pvc flamingos that she will get 50 bucks each I had 2 Elmo birdhouses that were not picked up after people left deposit so I'm sure they will sell as soon as they are out out and the school has a new therapy dog so I'm going to make only 2 planters that hopefully resemble the new doggie heres the dog and the pattern I'll tweak to get it close it will be made with 2x8 s and 2x4 s and paint

15 dollars per set

on a break from scroll saw and stick figures, tested positive for flu this morning.
-
When I make one for someone on occasion I do it freehand no patterns but I still draw each piece on paper if the pieces interlock at any point so it's snug not doing anything the next few days woke up with 101 temp this morning guess watching the grandkids when they are sick caught up to me my wife said if I sit in my grandkids cardboard castle she would bring the saw inside for me thinking most of the dust would stay inside the castle i need a break anyway temp down to 99.6 so meds are kicking in everyone enjoy thevweekend
-
Yeah I usually trace but not going to fret over 30 or 40 sheets of paper I used a fd psr 7 blade and snapped it after 35 figures
-
For my daughters next fundraiser at school I'm making a load of these stick figure pieces ive made 100's of them in the past mostly with the bandsaw still need sanding and some need floppy ears to be attached last years fundraiser was a huge success with the birdhouses and feeders she sold every unit I hope she sells a lot of them to staff as I told her I can make as many as she needs for the actual sale normally I trace them onto wood but this time I glued paper pattern so everyone of them is same to mix and match species Spanish cedar walnut poplar so far will use sapele and cherry as I move along she said 36 sets would be fine as I'm making her some other things like planters also since it's first week of may sale msde 18 sets so far ina couple of days but I know sanding will take some time snd my scraps are building rapidly i I did not rummage through scraps for these just lazy but all scrolling projects in future will first be sought after from scraps first if possible
-
One of Steve good downloads its some segment work and I won't be doing anything this small again my fingers don't like it I used plastic eyes and nose as I have a lot from the layered animals I make i I found some upholstery nails and they looked ok so I made them the buttons its not finished yet still need to sand base and cover sides to smooth a bit and then spray some lacquer Here's where I'm at It's rare I use paint but I took a paint pen and made the tie red it's sapele and hard maple used a 2/0 blade for it and cut the sides with a 5 ine Pegas one flying dutchman

It's a switch from building furniture as my back doesn't like me anymore and when I start lifting sheets of plywood or 12/4 boards my back yells at me and these projects are like wood turning can finish something in one day
