Letters colored with food coloring, clear lacquer top coat. Letters are 4" high, the whole thing is 23" long. Thanks for looking. Phantom Scroller, lawson56, amazingkevin and 1 other 4 Quote

Rob Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 I will have to experiment with food colouring sometime. Those colours are great and very even. Do you have any tips or tricks to share? Thanks, Rob Quote
Fish Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 Great job, I like the food coloring idea. Quote
dansnow Posted November 22, 2015 Author Report Posted November 22, 2015 Before coloring mix shellac 50/50 with denatured alcohol. Apply thin coat to piece and let dry. I mix the food coloring with denatured alcohol, (rubbing alcohol can sometimes precipitate out the dye pigments) to the intensity I want, then apply thinly, allow to sit for about 5 seconds then wipe off excess. Re-apply till you get the results you want. Quote

orangeman Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 I like the name puzzle immensely!! Looks great. What font did you use? What is the idea behind the 50% shellac treatment prior to applying the food coloring? Quote
dansnow Posted November 22, 2015 Author Report Posted November 22, 2015 The font is called Word Art, I got it off the web. The shellac fills in the fibers somewhat like a primer, and allows for a more even result with the dye. Quote
merlin Posted November 22, 2015 Report Posted November 22, 2015 Very good, must have a good at a name some day....................have used food coloring in the past but never used the shellac trick.................must find out more...............must have it in NZ................... Quote
