Dan:  You got to dial your phone?  We had to talk to the operator.

MTCowpoke22: You had more than one channel?  When TV finally arrived in our region in the late 1950s, we only received one channel.

I'm old enough and I grew up in a remote enough rural region that I could add a lot of things such as:

-Hauling logs out of the bush using a team of horses (heck, even knowing how to harness a team of horses)

-Cutting ice on the lake to store over the summer months in sawdust in the icehouse

-Stooking wheat sheaves by hand

-Getting up early in the morning to add coal to the furnace so that it would not go out

-Scraping ice off the inside of my bedroom window when the furnace did go out

-etc. etc. etc.

Apple and an orange and nuts in a stocking.

5K Memory computer

Teletex on the tv

Pubs full of smoke

Cheap beer

Oh and Roland Rat on the television

I'm done could go on but losing the will to live!.

Frank, we had 3 Channels. Two from North Dakota and one from Canada. It was weird watching Sesame Street in French. And I second ya on the teams and hauling wood. I did that for quite a few years when I was younger.

I'm enjoying this thread a real lot - but it sure does date a lot of folks who enjoy using the scollsaw ......

I might add .....

.... the school-yard teeter-totter!!  .....

.... and maybe .....

.... canning deer meat ......

.... and .....

..... of course .....

.... playing in the coal bin ....

.... then there is .....

.... the one-room school house ....

.... boys and girls school lines .....

.... the privilege of ringing the school bell .....

Was life any better??

theres a song by tim mcgraw titled "back when" that i think sums it up

Don't you remember
The fizz in a pepper
Peanuts in a bottle
At ten, two and four
A fried bologna sandwich
With mayo and tomato
Sittin' round the table
Don't happen much anymore

We got too complicated
It's all way over-rated
I like the old and out-dated
Way of life

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when

I love my records
Black, shiny vinyl
Clicks and pops
And white noise
Man they sounded fine
I had my favorite stations
The ones that played them all
Country, soul and rock-and-roll
What happened to those times?

I'm readin' 'Street Slang For Dummies'
'Cause they put pop in my country
I want more for my money
The way it was back then

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when

Give me a flat top for strumming
I want the whole world to be humming
Just keep it coming
The way it was back then

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when
I miss back when
I miss back when
