Popular Post Fish Posted June 10, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted June 10, 2018 I fially finished the pattern Bob made. I used the whole pattern for the top and half for the front and sides. 1/4" Oak and no idea what I'll do with it, probably sell it. munzieb Posted June 10, 2018 Report Posted June 10, 2018 Dan that is a truly nice box. I have done a similar one in oak and it is time consuming and blade consuming but definitely worth the effort. Nice job! Fish 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted June 10, 2018 Report Posted June 10, 2018 Very beautiful. Nice cutting, building and finishing! I love cutting this type of projects, putting them together can be a bit challenging sometimes. Fish 1 Quote

Fish Posted June 10, 2018 Author Report Posted June 10, 2018 Thanks everyone. I have another half of that box done due to making a mistake, then having to buy another piece of oak and it finally matched. The other pieces aren't even close color wise. One piece of the wood was really light and one really dark, it was all red oak. It's amazing the difference there can be in two pieces of the same kind of wood. Some put a colored liner in a box like this? I have never tried it. Quote
DWSUDEKUM Posted June 10, 2018 Report Posted June 10, 2018 Very nicely done project. That was a lot of work. Thanks for sharing this with us. DW Fish 1 Quote

Some put a colored liner in a box like this? I have never tried it. I have made several different types of boxes and try to add a felt base. I use the adhesive felt but found the stiffer type is easier to install. The thin stuff pulls too much. I will cut a 1/8" or 1/16" (if I can find it that big) so that it drops into the box and take it out and adhere the felt. I usually don't glue in place incase I want to remove it. Several people have suggested flocking. I have not tried it yet but it would not work for an extensive fretwork box like yours. If you plan on doing this in the future, add the felt and base thickness dimension to the height/sides of the box so it stays below your fret work on the bottom. I have also used 1/8" colored Plexiglas for the sides. It cuts like butter with a 60/80 tooth blade on my table saw (Leave the paper on!) I glue it on with contact cement brushed onto the wood or just go for interlocking snug fits on the sides. If you also do the felt, the base will help lock in place. Fish 1 Quote
