Popular Post Scrappile Posted September 20, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted September 20, 2018 (edited) In 2012 I got excited about "Skin over Frame Kayaks. Decided to try my hand at building one. I purchased a book from Kudzu Crafts that told how to. It was an outstanding book, so good that I was able to build one with just the instruction in the book. The book even contained "off set tables" so I could plot out the patterns for the frames, and the coaming for the kayak. It was one of the most enjoyable projects I have attempted. So much fun that when I completed it I made as second coaming (I already had the forms so why not, and I love to bend wood. I ordered the material for another one, but alas, never got to the second build. Anyway, I found out I could not sit in a kayak without a great deal of back pain which really takes the fun out of it. So once in the water and it has been sitting in my garage since. Always hoping some day I could us it. I decided it was time to give in and try to sell it. I didn't have to try hard. Listed it on Craigslist. The second person that contacted me said he wanted it. He drove down from beautiful Lake Coeur D Alene, Id. about 180 miles away. There are many lakes in that area, so it went to a good home. Oh well maybe now I will finish up the sailboat I started 10 years ago, the kayak is no longer sitting on top of the hull. P.S. I did use a scroll saw to build this. The inside cuts on the frames was done with a scroll saw. Edited October 11, 2018 by Scrappile jollyred, bobscroll, JimErn and 11 others 11 3 Quote
spirithorse Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 Wow! What a show-case of your never-ending talents, Paul! Sorry you had to sell it but, the memories of building it are probably priceless. Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse barb.j.enders, OCtoolguy and Scrappile 2 1 Quote

RabidAlien Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 That is one GORGEOUS kayak! Have you thought about trying a different style seat? I know its traditional for everything in a kayak to be low profile, but for me, I need a seat back that provides support a bit higher up. If its going to be a flat-water kayak, not punching rapids, then maybe a higher seat-back would help your back out? Just a thought. It really is a beautiful build. Scrappile and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote

I have never been in a kayak, but I still want to build one! i am extremely impressed with your build. I would be sad to see it go too! Scrappile and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote

Jim McDonald Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 Beautiful piece of watercraft. Hopefully the spirits of the wood will make the enjoyment better for the current owner. Scrappile and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote

ChelCass Posted September 28, 2018 Report Posted September 28, 2018 beautiful boat! I have lots of friends who kayak/ Like you I can't sit in them, in fact I can't even get in one because of my arthritic legs. Since your sold so quickly and you are in the perfect area I bet you could build and sell kayak's. Most Kayaks you see in the stores are plastic. Who wouldn't want to own a stunner like yours. Just a thought! Scrappile 1 Quote

Scrappile Posted October 11, 2018 Author Report Posted October 11, 2018 Pretty cool. The gentleman that purchased my kayak sent these photos yesterday of him using the kayak. He said he loves it.
