Looking for suggestions on the best type of hinges to use and where can I buy them?. I will make the boxes out of solid 1/4" red oak or maple. Maybe both. Below is one pattern I will use. jollyred Posted August 2, 2020 Report Share Posted August 2, 2020 I have used small decorative brass hinges on boxes like that. You can get them at most of the box stores and hardware stores. They come with small nails to hold them on, which I don't like, so I got some 1/4" brass screws to use with them. With 1/4" wood, you may need to file or grind off the very tip so they don't go all the way through the wood. The screws will need predrilled holes to fit into, but they hold a lot better than nails. I use a hinge bit to drill the holes, which makes life a little easier. By the way, I like the box. You did a great job on it. Someone is going to be very happy. kmmcrafts Posted August 2, 2020 Report Share Posted August 2, 2020 I had to google it... and your favorite store has them.. looking at the pictures it looks to me like the outer art lines up with the hole in the hinge and then you get your hole perfectly centered into the hinge hole for the screws to go in and sink without getting them off centered etc.. The type of hinge 1st depends upon the type of lid you use, overhang, flush, inside, apron etc and if you are prepared to house them in or only want surface mounts. I go along with Tom, and never use nails, although that is what some of the smaller hinges and catches come supplied with. I drill pilot holes and I screw in a steel screw of the same size, fully seating it to insure the hole can accept the brass hardware. One half mil left on each side just invites the "wood sprites" to work their mischief. Breathe wrong and you're looking at a blowout. JimErn Posted August 3, 2020 Report Share Posted August 3, 2020 I am not optimistic enough to use 1/4, I would go with 3/8, even the pic looks like it is done in 3/8ths.
