This past Thursday was my last day at work.  I've worked full time since I was 18 and I've spent the last 44+ years with the same employer.  There were a lot of us there of a similar age.  Most of them have retired already or otherwise moved on.  Some of them had as many as 50 years there.  The business was family owned since 1960, but was sold to a conglomerate last year.  Lots of changes coming and I knew it was time for me to ride off into the sunset.  I'm looking forward to going to bed tonight, knowing I don't have to get up for work tomorrow.  😀

Congratulations.

My last job lasted 24 years.  Ended 2 days ago.  They told me I was being laid off 3 weeks ago.   They laid off 5% of employees and some departments got bigger cuts. I suspect many more companies will be announcing changes.

I turned 65 a few months ago. I have started to exercise again. Ride my bike, walked 2 miles.  In the past 3 weeks only dreamed of work twice.

I have a non-profit project started today.   No timeline.  No specifications, just my imagination.

I get to interact (not work) with non-engineers for once.

First, congratulations on retirement. Don't forget to NOT set the alarm. I still wake up at 5:30 every morning.

I was just commenting with my neighbor yesterday how they prepare you for a job/career but never prepare you for retirement.

I closed my business last year after 45 years but have not stopped learning and making stuff (scrolling is one of many things to keep me busy)

I'll be 70 in a few months, trying to plan for at least 25 years of fun things to do if my body cooperates.

Been retired for a little over 25 years.  Still wake up early every morning. Up around 6 am.  If I were to stay in bed until later, I would feel like I wasted most of the day.  But I also go to bed early.  Even when I did work, I would get up early on the days off.

Congratulations but don't bet on retirement. I have retired 3 times in the last three years.

In my profession there is such a shortage of licensed people I have gone back to work each time . I have made a commitment this time to train 2 new people if my health holds out. That is a 2 year project.

What ever you do enjoy it.

I am 73, retired from the military, and worked after for 28 years before retiring as a Systems Programmer, specializing in Unix/Linux administration. I am busier now in retirement than ever. My grandkids take a huge chunk out of my time, and I don't regret a second of it. I have zero spare time.

I have been getting up at 0400 for so many years that I still wake up between 4 and 5 in the morning. The best thing so far is no alarm clocks.

For exercise, I ruck with 30 lbs of iron on my back, typically four miles but occasionally five or six. I also do some resistance training when I can force myself to. It's pretty boring.

Thanks for your service!

The whole thing about keeping busy is that, as a retiree, you get to define what "busy" is and do things more on your own terms.  That is what I'm most looking forward to.  I've worked the past 30 years or so doing production planning and scheduling for a small manufacturing company.  It was my job to determine lead times, define schedules and due dates for material, keep personnel utilized and help manufacturing reach goals.  Those goals were always set by someone else and I didn't always have much input.  I am very glad to be done with all that.

Been retired 3.5 years now. My cardiac surgery really sped up the process, but I was ready to go at that point anyway.

I do cardiac rehab at least 4 mornings a week and we now have the freedom to go  or stay.

And today is another date with the granddaughter and then her new brother will be here in July. (The other grandparents are not retired, so we get first call on days like this)
