  1. I usually paint then glue. usually Aleene's Tacky Glue. It dries clear, so any squeeze out is better hidden. If I can't find the bottle of Tacky Glue, I will sometimes use super glue. I also use a high-temp hot glue gun for some projects. If the paint is dry the glue holds well enough for decorative pieces.
  2. a #3 blade sounds a bit small for 1" material. My guess is that the blade was deflecting as you were cutting so that the cuts were not square, making it hard to get apart.
  3. it is just beautiful! wouldn't want to distract from that.
  4. wow!! that is really cool. The end result is awesome!
  5. very cool! Are you going to frame it or just leave it as it is?
  6. I have cut a few projects with metal. I have cut 1/4" aluminum, but nothing fancy. It was pretty thick and took a few blades to make a small cut. I made a couple of projects out of galvanized flashing sheets. They came in pieces 5x7, were really thin, and cut decently. I found a link When cutting thin metal I always sandwich between two pieces of thin plywood. The thin metal likes to catch and bend making it hard to cut on its own. I made a stack by just taping the edges like I would do with any other stack. I would really recommend that you start by getting used to what the saw can do in wood. When you are comfortable in wood, jump to metal. I don't know much about your off the wall ideas (love to hear about them) it might be possible to get the look you are going for with a painted finish.
  7. @profrpowell How often do you have to tighten the bolts that hold the motor?
  8. great project! very well done.
  9. I heard once that using the fence on the left side of the blade was a European method. I have no idea if there is truth to that.
  10. I like the fake frame. It finishes the piece nicely. The idea could be used on a number of projects, thanks for sharing.
  11. Can you post a picture or a link to the one you made. I want to make sure I am thinking of the same thing you are.
  12. I really like this! I hope you don't mind if I steal the idea.
  13. I think you will be very pleased with your new blades!
  14. It is a steve good pattern, called Manger Box http://www.stevedgood.com/mangerbox.pdf
  15. All of my school shops have had Dewalt miter saws, and they have never given me any trouble. I have loved all of my Hitachi tools. Someday I will replace my little tool-shop miter with a Hitachi.
  16. I have some that I got to practice chip carving. I used my scroll saw to cut it into pieces. If you tried to make a project I think you would find that it cuts too easily. A little nudge in the wrong direction makes a big cut. It is a nice green color, so anything you make would have to be painted.
  17. Brushing paint onto delicate scrollwork is difficult. Your attempt is not really that bad. When I want the edges painted I spray paint. Leave the pattern on to try and protect the front side. Then use something for a sealer coat on the front side, I use Rustoleum 2x clear. I use it as a sealer and a top coat for most of my projects. I use Deco Art Americana acrylic paint (I buy mine at Michaels locally). Get a decent flat or angled brush, 1/4" or smaller. I noticed a big difference in quality when I jumped up from the cheapest brushes, not the most expensive just not the cheapest.
  18. I've been there more times than I care to admit.
  19. It isn't inlay, but if I wanted a cutting board with michigan on it I would do one side like a routed sign, and use the other side for the cutting board. Route in the design, put paint in the routed area, sand flat to remove any fuzzies or extra paint.
  20. I will second Kev's second point. EBAY tends to be a bargain hunters place to go. I buy lots of stuff online but only look at EBAY when I am looking for something cheap or some specific old things.
  21. I use spray lacquer on most of mine. There are a few brands of spray glitter that I have used a few times when they need some bling.
  22. My teacher stuff starts next week and kids start right after labor day. I am looking forward to the new year, although I do love sleeping in during the summer. I will try to get some of my classroom projects posted.
  23. When I cut off a lid that gets a bit crooked, I usually find a piece of scrap wedged against the fence. Another thing is that on one of the table saws there is a miter gauge slot that is sort of in the way. Putting pressure down will cause the box to lift up at an angle.
  24. I don't really know, but if it was me I would try to find digital image I could print. I would be worried that I would cut up a a "priceless" book.
  25. I would maybe make it more of an oval so that both the letters touched the side. Also, I think if the M was a font that was more angled to match the A it would be better. My 2 cents.
