Kevin I am not even going to weigh in here because this becomes a matter of choice. But Bill Wilson gave a lot of good pointers to consider when buying. I will add a cabinet saw and hybrid are easier to collect dust from because they are enclosed fully. They are easier to adjust the miter slots to the blade because the table top moves to do this as opposed to a contractor saw where you move the trunions. I will say stay away from any saw that has the open grilled type extension wings. Pain in the butt and could be dangerous. A hybrid is a combination of cabinet and contractor. Many people make their own outfeed tables to accommodate their work space. I have a Delta contractor saw and love it and it has been my work horse for over 35 years. Of the top 3 the sawstop is the new kid on the block. Powermatic and delta have changed hands over the years. If the tool is well maintained it should last a life time. Cabinet saws will have a larger motor on it because they are designed for heavier work loads but a contractor saw will do well also. Good luck.

You can get kickback on any saw. Sawstop will not prevent it. Many things come into play when talking kickback. Fence, runout of arbor, blade, feed position and so on.

Oh Kevin that is a big investment if you are thinking full size floor model saw. A couple things you have to ask yourself. How large of a saw do I want and have the space for. Do you want a cabinet saw or contractors saw or hybrid. Is the safety feature all that important to you to add about $500 to price tag> You are looking at $2000 to $3000 for a Sawstop saw. The cartridges and replacement of blades could get expensive if you keep firing that safety feature. There are work arounds it and the idea of not getting cut is a huge factor. I can break down saws for you in detail if you like. The top 3 saws on the market are Sawstop, Delta, Powermatic if you are talking full size.

Ray they change those out to a quick release lever now adays if they break. There are many Delta parts dealers on the net just have to google for what you want. 2011 Delta sold their division and was taken over by a chineses company. They moved part of the headquarters to South Carolina. have to say I have a shop full of Delta tools and of course they are older tools but I would not hesitate to buy Delta again. It is a crap shoot of who owns these companies today. People love Wen and I would not get with 2 feet of a wen product. Grizzly gets high marks but again would not touch them All Chineses made too. Good luck in your quest. If you ever need another part let me know and I will locate it or give you a little insight as to what can be done. As I said those tension knobs are an old system that has been long replaced.

Very nice variety. I think that red and green Christmas cross is not going to be around long. Thanks for showing.

I never store my items in the cold and in fact I will not even put my craft stuff in the truck until the morning of a show. Wood products will expand and contract due to moisture and temps. Just the nature of wood. Now depending on the type of projects you make can have an effect of cracking. If the items are glued the glue can crack. If the pieces are thin veneers they can become brittle. Just my thoughts. This applies for heat in the summer as well. Extreme temps is not good for finished craft projects.

Again all I can suggest is find someone who can teach this stuff to you or look for videos on utube. Even using a hand plane can be used to square the ends of boards if used correctly and most times a shooting board is used in conjunction with a hand plane. But again sharp blades is key and setting the plane up is also key. Type of plane is important because there are many types and styles and they are used for different things.

I have found that it is a long way down to get to something you dropped on the floor these days. Never use to be that far down. I must have gotten much taller.

I started answering now with hello (name of town) police dept. Sgt John here how can I help you. Hang ups are happening.

I never did realize how many of these robo calls or whatever scam calls come through since I retired. Some days the phone constantly rings. One after another. Other days nothing so there must be a pattern day. With that said another thing that has become popular in my area and want to strangle these people are the solicitors that ring the doorbell. Power companies solar companies, remodel companies, you name it they sell it. I tell the person to take me off the list and next week another guy shows up selling same thing. Now with crime the way it is these days you never know what is ringing the doorbell or on the other end they do not know what is behind that door. I have been meaning to have a sign made no soliciting

I too agree with this. I do what I can to not see the hole in the back. Some of the 2-3/4" inserts you have to drill all the way through but I still use a forstner bit. I just had to order a 42mm bit a couple days ago because of some inserts I have. Now I have used these inserts before but I either must have cheated the smaller bit to ream the edges of I had that bit somewhere but it is not to be found again. Hate when that happens and the memory does not work.

Thanks I may have to check with my dealer and see if he carries any sycamore. That has some nice look to it.

They usually run all kinds of sales this time of the year. That is when I picked up another 400 series one last year. Almost jumped in my cart from Home Depot. I am hoping they have another great sale on the Rigid shop vac this year. A couple years ago they had a tremendous sale on them for about $30 I picked up a couple. My Craftsman one died this year finally and that owed me nothing but have to use one of the Rigids and would like to replace and have a back up.

Ever since you shown that project I have been trying to figure out that wood type. Do you know what that wood is called?? My only guess was lacewood but not there. Nice recovery and lesson learned as you say. Thanks for showing.

Talk to Kevin about cherry wood. He uses it almost exclusively in his projects and seems to work well for him. I have no answer for the different types and where they come from but you can find that in all species of wood. I find some red oak just a bear to cut and most just as easy as cutting pine. Exotics will always be hard on blades and have a tendency to burn because of the resins in them. They are so dense also.

I know this is probably overkill for you Kevin but this is what I have for my Dremel and I have 3 dremels but this is a precision tool for using the dremel or likewise tool for plunge routing or edge routing. I am from the school buy once and buy quality. I also have a few of dremel attachments but when I looked at their plunge routing attachment it was too cheaply made for any accuracy for me. Thus I went this route.http://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Routers_and_Bits/Routers/Precision_Router_Base.html?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=BS%3A%20Catchall&utm_term=457

I have a couple dremels and use them for detailed work. I use the fixed router base alot when doing some fine router work. I have many other options when it comes to plunge routers so not looking for that.

I have a Delta 16" floor model and a Delta 12" model and not one complaint about the tool. Perfect and I use my 16" to drill the tiniest holes in scroll projects with no problem. I do have to use a small pin chuck because the 16" does not have a zero clearance chuck on it. I would buy another delta any day. I would of course check all the variables to make sure it is true and if not return it but I do know what to look for. For drum sanding I have a Clayton oscillating spindle drum sander. Nice sander. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81PE1T69ZRL._SX300_.gif
-
Be careful with sanding drums on a drill press. They can cause the wobble effect you speak of. Pressure being applied sidewards on the chuck and arbor is not what they were designed for.
-
Boy I would be very scared telling you anything on a forum about the use of power tools. I suggest you find someone who can either teach you or do some of the preliminary work for you. Sanding edges flat even on flat glass is not easy to do. The pieces can rock and you are sanding edges and not the flat.

I told myself that I wouldn't post til finished but......

Well here is another "ATTABOY" that is coming along really well and is going to look good all finished up. Some talent in that piece for sure. -
It all depends on the type scrolling you are doing. If it is alot of portraits then frames are pretty much needed. Now you can buy frames premade from dollar stores or walmart but your work may need custom frames because of size. You can buy molding already shaped and just cut to size. You can make your work so that it can be displayed on an easel or plate stands as they are called. instead of in a frame. I am sure other will have more ideas.

Cherry is one of those woods that does burn easily as well as many exotics. The tape trick does work. I use blue tape under all my patterns anyway so I really do not notice burning.

Buying And Selling Online With Tax Laws Getting Crazy
JTTHECLOCKMAN replied to kmmcrafts's topic in General Scroll Sawing
It is a hassle and getting worse but good paper work backs you up. Yes it may take some time if you have problems. I was audited the very first year I started my business. I had to go to IRS twice to get things straightened out. I finally took all paper work and placed it on the ladys desk and gave her the header page so that each bill and numbers were listed and told her to call me when you are done of if you had any questions because i could not sit there and walk her through every bill. I told her my time is money too. 2 days later everything was squared away and I picked up my paperwork and believe me it was in the same order as I left it with her. My business is way too small to go after me. She realized that I am sure and her boss probably told her move on. I fill out quarterly sales and use tax. If I get behind they send a letter threatening to add penalty. Some quarters are 0 income so I say go ahead. It was just a matter of time when all states want a poiec of internet action because it has become so huge and the brick and mortar stores are becoming a thing of the past. Good luck to all -

They can not go back to collect taxes. Those laws are for the here and now. Fight any charges.
