  1. I use a wooded trivet I made 20 years ago. We use it almost everyday. It was finished with blo/mineral spirit and have had no issues. It looks well used, which I like, but my SLW wants me to make a new one.
  2. Hello Michael and welcome to the Village! Love those hinges.

  5. Hey Rick, what is the file type of the image you imported <or copied) into Inkscape to be traced?
  6. That pattern is a painted segmentation. Cut all the pieces, paint the front and back of each piece, then glue them pack together.
  7. It looks like you're on the way to a good repair. When you're done, the only one to notice the repairs will be you. Nice pattern, btw.
  8. It's been a while since I did any just plain scrolling so I picked Steve Goods' church pattern. I think it's easy enough for my grandkids to try, well, mostly easy for them. I made it from 1/4" and 1/8" Baltic birch ply. I stained the church a light cherry, the door and window frame dark walnut, and the trees, wreath and ribbon are dyed with General Finishes. The steps are painted with acrylic paint made to look like stone slabs. I did change things a bit. I didn't add the star banner over the door. I just thought it was too much. I didn't care for the icicles on the tower being cut in so I cut them from 1/8" and applied it. Not sure if I got the effect I was looking for. Also, the pattern called for all 1/4" but I thought the window frames and icicles would look better from 1/8" ply. I like it better. Seem to add more dimension since it's right next to the trees. I didn't want the round base as it may not fit where I want to put it so I cut something a little smaller from cedar and left the natural edge on the front. The pattern has a tab on the bottom of the backer which is 1/4" thick. The pattern for the base has a cutout almost 1/2" thick which wouldn't fit the tab, so I resized it to fit snuggly. I didn't glue the tab to the base so it can be taken apart and stored easier. I think this would look great with some lighting to glow through the windows. Comments welcome.

  10. Welcome to the Village, Aaron. I hope you get more time in the shop. Set small goals (like one or two ornaments a day) and soon your life will be on the upswing.
  11. I saw a video of a guy that did something like that but he glued the piece he was cutting to another board then ran it through the table saw. I have run thin wood through the thickness planer using a carrier board. Just stuck the roughly 1/8" hardwood to the carrier board with double-sided tape and planed to the thickness I needed, 1/16". These were only 6" long and 2" wide. The toughest part was getting the part removed from the tape. So, you could cut the board the size you need to make all the parts for the project and run it through the planer to get the thickness you want.
  12. Good details. I've seen where someone would cut put the pattern on the 1/8", cut just the interior cuts (eyes, mouth, etc.) then glue the 1/8" to the 1/4" and cut the outline. Either way would get the job done.

  15. Welcome from Ohio! I'm not familiar with your saw but I did find this manual. Sure hope it's the one you're looking for. http://www.vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=24398.

  18. Very nice. Brightens up the yard.
  19. I agree with John, could make without those joints. I believe those are box joints. I have seen where people use both wood glue and super glue. The super glue will hold the joints together long enough for the wood glue to set up. Put a few drops of super glue on a piece and the wood glue between those. I haven't tried it but I can see it working.
