    Handy Tips

My favorite is the box fan filter. Before I used it I was vacuuming after every project. Now I only vacuum about once a week. Save old scroll saw blades. They can be used to poke dust and small pieces lodged in the kerf. You can also use them to embellish small frames.

Cool! Be sure to put some cork on the back to protect the furniture.
  8. Thanks all. The wood is eastern red cedar and the font is a modified Ancestry SF. I had to add a few bridges to the font to make things work.
  9. Nice project. I'm not sure if I would leave it natural color or paint it. Either way I like it.

    Nice design. Thanks for sharing.
  11. Made this for a friend.
  12. Dick, I think you are on track. Keep adding the details then start looking for floaters and islands. If you want to covert it to a vector drawing it's easy to do once you have the pattern completed as a jpg.
  13. Great job! What type of wood is it?
  14. If you have runs, you are probably putting it on too thick. Try using less and spreading it thinner. It will take a few coats to build up a nice finish, but it is worth it.
  15. Nice work and wonderful thought. I know she will love it.
  16. Hey Bill, I don't think mineral oil will dry, but I may be wrong. I know when I used it on cutting boards the rags never seem to dry. BLO/mineral spirits will yellow the BB ply slightly. You could thin some polyurethane. It's low odor and may even dry faster than BLO.
  17. I spray...less cleanup.
  18. This is from Wikipedia: A shoutbox, saybox, tagboard, chatterbox, chat box, or comment section is a chat-like feature of some websites that allows people to quickly leave messages on the website, generally without any form of user registration. I remember the good old days when people use to write comments (graffiti) on the bathroom walls. I guess in today's society, the kids don't go out so shoutbox is their bathroom wall.
  19. Not sure if this would work, but I think so. Cut some thin (1/2" wide) strips of 1/8" plywood to go around the back of the frame. Glue them in place. This will give you an extra 1/8" thickness where the portrait goes. This is assuming your portrait is cut from 1/8" stock.
  20. Thanks everyone. For those with a curious mind (and nothing better to do) here's a link to some of his videos. http://www.youtube.com/user/RedGreenTV
  21. Thanks Richard. I found that slowing down the blade speed gave me a little more control toward the end of this project. I use 1/8" Baltic birch ply.
  22. Finished Red Green today. Not a lot of cuts (I counted 100) but a couple of delicate spots. Still needs to be sanded and framed. Uses 4 FD-UR#1 blades. Took about 4 hours. I stacked 2 1/8" plys but the blade seemed pretty aggressive. Hope to make a frame this week. Thanks for looking.
  23. I converted my car's remote to use on my scroll saw. I value my saw more than my car. Marg, here's a tutorial on how to install it.http://www.hgtv.com/home-improvement/how-to-install-click-lock-wood-flooring/index.html
  24. I do that all the time. If I'm making ornaments, instead of spending cash on 1/4" or 1/8" hardwood, I just take thicker boards (3/4" or thicker) and resaw them. Then I run them through the thickness planer. I can do a lot in less time than it takes to drive to the store, buy the wood, and drive back. And I get more for my money.
  25. Looks great Richard.
