  1. That's my 67 GMC daily driver! I love that truck!
  2. It had better be big enough! That's as big as the city will let me go. The plan is to take the Oil furnace out of the basement and replace it with an electric heat pump and then put the furnace in the shop. That way I don't have to pay for anything extra and I get some good heat in the winter.
  3. Finally got some time today to check in. Been a busy 6-8 months. Sold our old house and downsized to a new one. Went from 4 bed 2 bath to 2 bed 1 bath. It's an older place on 1/3 acre so I have plenty of room to build my dream shop with my wifes %100 approval! Have a couple bids out for a 30 x 50 x 12 pole building. Should be starting soon. All my tools are in the little tiny 1 car garage. I have a little path down the side to get to the garage door and the light switch, haha. Spent most of this last week doing yard work, cutting trees, removing stumps, flattening the yard etc... now it's ready for grass. Hopefully by this fall I should start posting some more stuff in the bragging rights section, my sister already has a project for me.
  4. When i started building my model boats as a side business I figured I needed a logo. I did a lot of thinking and brainstorming and it always came back to a pattern I saw here on Scroll saw Village that I really liked. It was one by bobscroll of a dragon head. The boats are made of carbon fiber, and in the mythological world dragon skin or dragon scales are the strongest stuff around sooo.... I contacted him and asked if I could use his dragon head or a variation of it as part of my logo. He had no problem with it so I proceeded with designing it. Here is what we came up with. It looks pretty good. I just wanted to give him a shoutout and say thanks.
  5. Just built and delivered this trophy to a boat club near Seattle. Have one more modern hydro to build and deliver for the July race. Then 5 more for another group for a race in June.
  6. I've been using them for a while and love them. Usually doing birch plywood and aromatic cedar. They are aggressive and stack cutting seems to be the best, since if I try to do only 1 layer it cuts too fast! They are at the local woodcraft store on the way home from work so I don't have to go out of my way to get them either.
  7. I volunteered to give away 4 of my trophies for the model boat Nationals in Vegas this Oct. There are about 40 different racing classes but they also do what they call "Concourse judging" for the scale hydroplanes. They judge how accurate the hull is compared to the original race boat. There are 4 different "Scale" classes, 1/7th Modern, 1/7th Vintage, 1/8th and 1/6th. I am doing the trophies for these 4 classes. Should be fun, plus get my name and face out there since I'll be there racing too. I'll probably do them with a Maple base, red cedar pattern and maple backer to make them a little nicer than the previous ones I've done. http://www.nats.namba.com/ I haven't done them yet but I figured it would fit in the "Bragging Rights" section. haha!
  8. I have had a few where I tape a piece back in the original hole because I know if I catch my finger on it that it will break. Seems to help at least when you are cutting. Afrerwards they are usually glued to a backer so I don't need to worry too much.
  9. Thanks everyone. Most of the time you send things away and never hear anything back. So this was nice.
  10. So I sent the 17 model boat trophies to San Diego. They really liked them. In fact they included my name in the national monthly newsletter. The article is "Nitro in district 19". Nice to see that and it might get me a little more business. Propwash October 2016 Web.pub.pdf
  11. I use dollar store masking tape. It's cheap and sticks just enough so that it doesn't peel off if I wait a day or 2. But then comes off really easy and leaved no residue. Most of my stuff is pretty brittle and small so I would be terrified to use a rag with mineral spirits.
  12. AHA! good question Len. The bases are large enough to place an aluminum engraved plaque in front of the image. It has the class of boat, club and whatever other info they want. The color of the bases could have been done the same as or similar to the cedar but I didn't think I had enough stain to get them all done and I honestly said "good enough" haha! I've done some with mahogany that matched very well but I don't have much of that left. Not enough to do this many.
  13. I gave some trophies to a club earlier this year. There is a husband / wife that both race together. Her boat is actually faster than his so he drove her pink boat that weekend just so he could make sure and get one of my trophies. And he did win the final and got it! It was a cool story to hear.
  14. Thanks everyone! These are always fun to do and it's much nicer than just the plain engraved plaque.
  15. Had a model boat club in San Diego request 17 trophies from me a while back. I finally got them done. (16 shown here) Made from Aeromatic cedar and a pine backer to hold it together mounted on an oak base. The bases are about 11 3/4 in long. Usually I charge $20 each but since he ordered so many I dropped it to $17 each. I did stacks of 3 when cutting so I still have a couple others that are spares for later.
  16. I use them if I have to. But if I do I make sure and use them on a practice piece first to get used to them again. They do take some getting used to. Make sure and practice first! It's almost like throwing a ball with the wrong hand, I can do it but it takes a LOT of concentration and I have to go slow.
  17. The nice thing about this forum (from what I have seen) is that even if you asked for and did get some criticism it would always be good info that you could use to improve yourself. " Try such and such a blade, slow down/crank up your speed." Never a "That looks like junk, you suck" type of post. The people here are the best I have seen on any forum anywhere.
  18. I did the same thing once before too. I had the same nightmare of trying to get the glue off. Never again. The tape thing is just too easy to not do for me.
  19. Good job, looks nice. I always liked the look of the P-38.
  20. Most people wouldn't notice. I usually say, "It's something in the grain of the wood"
  21. I think I did too. But I havent been on here for about a week so....
  22. I'll have to put one in for my Dad. He had just sharpened the lawn mower blade and had done a very nice job. Was tightening the bolt on the blade and the wrench slipped. He sliced the tendons in 2 fingers. They had to operate on his hand to go get the tendons and reattach them. Good reason to wear gloves!
  23. Was using a cut off wheelin my roto zip. Apparently it wasn't balanced or loose or something (I'm not sure) but when I turned it on, the shaft bent, it spun around a couple times then hit the accessory attachment stud and kicked itself right out of the chuck. Of course it hit me square in the face! Felt like I got punched in the mouth. Luckily I had my dust mask on and it put teeth marks in that instead of my face.
  24. Thanks everyone! It is a unique project. We'll see if it brings me any more work after it's finished.
  25. Good job Kevin! you always get neat requests.
