  1. Just built and delivered this trophy to a boat club near Seattle. Have one more modern hydro to build and deliver for the July race. Then 5 more for another group for a race in June.
  2. 55 inches long x 24 inches wide, 8 lbs. All carbon fiber with Green/black fabric on the top. This one went to a guy near Chicago.
  3. I've been using them for a while and love them. Usually doing birch plywood and aromatic cedar. They are aggressive and stack cutting seems to be the best, since if I try to do only 1 layer it cuts too fast! They are at the local woodcraft store on the way home from work so I don't have to go out of my way to get them either.
  4. I volunteered to give away 4 of my trophies for the model boat Nationals in Vegas this Oct. There are about 40 different racing classes but they also do what they call "Concourse judging" for the scale hydroplanes. They judge how accurate the hull is compared to the original race boat. There are 4 different "Scale" classes, 1/7th Modern, 1/7th Vintage, 1/8th and 1/6th. I am doing the trophies for these 4 classes. Should be fun, plus get my name and face out there since I'll be there racing too. I'll probably do them with a Maple base, red cedar pattern and maple backer to make them a little nicer than the previous ones I've done. http://www.nats.namba.com/ I haven't done them yet but I figured it would fit in the "Bragging Rights" section. haha!
  5. I have had a few where I tape a piece back in the original hole because I know if I catch my finger on it that it will break. Seems to help at least when you are cutting. Afrerwards they are usually glued to a backer so I don't need to worry too much.
  6. Thanks everyone. Most of the time you send things away and never hear anything back. So this was nice.
  7. So I sent the 17 model boat trophies to San Diego. They really liked them. In fact they included my name in the national monthly newsletter. The article is "Nitro in district 19". Nice to see that and it might get me a little more business. Propwash October 2016 Web.pub.pdf
  8. I use dollar store masking tape. It's cheap and sticks just enough so that it doesn't peel off if I wait a day or 2. But then comes off really easy and leaved no residue. Most of my stuff is pretty brittle and small so I would be terrified to use a rag with mineral spirits.
  9. AHA! good question Len. The bases are large enough to place an aluminum engraved plaque in front of the image. It has the class of boat, club and whatever other info they want. The color of the bases could have been done the same as or similar to the cedar but I didn't think I had enough stain to get them all done and I honestly said "good enough" haha! I've done some with mahogany that matched very well but I don't have much of that left. Not enough to do this many.
  10. I gave some trophies to a club earlier this year. There is a husband / wife that both race together. Her boat is actually faster than his so he drove her pink boat that weekend just so he could make sure and get one of my trophies. And he did win the final and got it! It was a cool story to hear.
  11. Thanks everyone! These are always fun to do and it's much nicer than just the plain engraved plaque.
  12. Had a model boat club in San Diego request 17 trophies from me a while back. I finally got them done. (16 shown here) Made from Aeromatic cedar and a pine backer to hold it together mounted on an oak base. The bases are about 11 3/4 in long. Usually I charge $20 each but since he ordered so many I dropped it to $17 each. I did stacks of 3 when cutting so I still have a couple others that are spares for later.
  13. Haven't done much on the scroll saw the past few months but I do have some orders for about 20 trophies for a couple model boat clubs around the country. The reason I've been away from the saw is I built a 1/6 scale RC boat last year. It ran very well so I made molds off it over the winter. I've made 2 boats from the molds so far. One went to the Seattle area, the second one is mine. It is made of all carbon fiber using resin infusion. Here are a couple videos of me laying the material and the infusion process. The whole boat weighs 7 lbs compared to 12 lbs for the wood one, not including motor and everything else. Should get this one on the water this Friday weather permitting. I already have 2 more on order and the first one hasn't hit the water yet. Infusion process starts at 4:30, unless you want to watch me adjust the bag ...
  14. I haven't been on here much since I picked up this 67 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 a couple months ago. It needs some tlc but I got it running pretty good and it doesn't have any rust so I'm pretty happy so far. Did some motor work, distributor, new carb, plugs wires, alternator, starter, brakes front & back. Needs some front axle work or a new front axle whichever is cheaper. Right after I bought this one the transmission went out on the 96 chevy truck so I had to scramble to get this one up and running so I could get back & forth to work. I sold these tires & wheels and got smaller ones that actually FIT! Next is to drop the 6 inch lift down to 2.5 inches. It will eventually get a paint job and get fixed up, nothing fancy, just a nice daily driver.
  15. I use them if I have to. But if I do I make sure and use them on a practice piece first to get used to them again. They do take some getting used to. Make sure and practice first! It's almost like throwing a ball with the wrong hand, I can do it but it takes a LOT of concentration and I have to go slow.
  16. I had never even heard of this before! I googled "Dice tower" and looked at a bunc of pictures. This is really cool. I think I found my next project. I know where I could sell a ton of these!
  17. The nice thing about this forum (from what I have seen) is that even if you asked for and did get some criticism it would always be good info that you could use to improve yourself. " Try such and such a blade, slow down/crank up your speed." Never a "That looks like junk, you suck" type of post. The people here are the best I have seen on any forum anywhere.
  18. It's a $60 go pro knock off I borrowed from a coworker.
  19. GrandpaJim, this is my other hobbythat takes up most of my summers. I am part of a Radio controlled model boat club that specializes in Scale hydroplanes. The class I run is the largest class available which is 1/6 scale. This boat is 54 inches long x 24 inches wide. We use modified weed whacker engines up to 30cc. Most are between 5-7hp @ 17-18,000 rpm. There are also 1/10 scale electrics, 1/7 scale electrics, 1/8 scale electrics, and 1/8 scale Nitro motors. Some are wood boats, some are fiberglass, and a few are carbon fiber. Our bigger boats usually go between 60-65mph durring a heat race. This was an official "6 laps = 1 Mile" course. As you can see from the video these boats take a beating out there.
  20. Last race of the season last weekend. I did ok though had some bad luck here & there. Boat was running really fast. At one point I hit a beer bottle that was floating in the water near the opposite shore. Still finished ok even with a hole the size of my fist in the bottom. 5min epoxy and some tape and we were back up and ready for the next heat. The race starts at about 2:25
  21. I did the same thing once before too. I had the same nightmare of trying to get the glue off. Never again. The tape thing is just too easy to not do for me.
  22. Good job, looks nice. I always liked the look of the P-38.
  23. Most people wouldn't notice. I usually say, "It's something in the grain of the wood"
  24. I think I did too. But I havent been on here for about a week so....
  25. I'll have to put one in for my Dad. He had just sharpened the lawn mower blade and had done a very nice job. Was tightening the bolt on the blade and the wrench slipped. He sliced the tendons in 2 fingers. They had to operate on his hand to go get the tendons and reattach them. Good reason to wear gloves!
