Tony, I agree with your statement here but this is an exception for me because it is a rather confusing piece and it helped to bing our what it looked like when it was selling. Normally, I too would have left it natural but i am writing a booklet for the family history and I want to include a photo of this in my booklet so I thought the colorization was necessary in this case Dick heppnerguy

Tony, you did a great job cutting this and the contrast on it is perfect. Most people try to always find something complimentary to post about others work. No one wants another to feel like what they do is not up to snuff. This being said, I would also like to add that the comments that Len made is to be taken as a constructive insight. I know that Len does make these comments and i always appreciate it when he does so because he looks at the posts carefully and offers advice that I always find to be helpful. My guess is that the main pieces may have had a small warp in it so you added the nails to hold it down. or the backer board was a little warped and hence the same fix. In the future i would recommend that you glue the entire piece and then clamp it instead of using nails. Dick heppnerguy

some of you might recall that I had a request for my wife's great grandfathers tractor pattern. Mehendra was able to come up with one that I could use so I cut it. I then colorized it and this is the results. I also made one with the colorizing being on the backer board, instead, but my wife said she did not like that one so i tried it this way, I just used water colors and with next to my no talent nature, it turned out about as well as I can do. I you need to use a #9 blade to do your cutting, then if it were me, i would just use a different wood and a smaller blade when I was making these signs. I have never had this problem when cutting these projects and I cut quite a few of them. Good luck, Kevin.. Personally, I would not glue a broken board as you do, because I think it takes too much away from all your efforts. Just my oppinion Dick heppnerguy

Puzzles are for people that enjoy sitting and examining the pieces by color and by shape and get a satisfied feeling when they finally get it all together. I believe an easy to build puzzle is a waste of time with no personal rewards when it is put together. if a puzzle is challenging then the true puzzle builder, just 'has to give it a go'. Build it piece by piece as you cut it and when you are through cutting it, you will have the bragging rights to say that 'you built it." Dick heppnerguy

Very interesting design. I think you picked that perfect wood for this. Is this your own design ? If so, you have a great imagination. I could have never though up this beautiful piece. New ideas seem to come very hard for me. Dick heppnerguy

The 'regulars' come here' pretty much daily, because the people here are 'family' and you will understand that IF you make the effort to log on here often too. check everything out here. there are a lot of things to see and learn here. W elcome Chris. you are on the right track. The right blades is a major key to successful scrolling. there is a large variety of blades out there and you jsut need to try a few different ones because it seems everyone has the 'perfect blade' for their own use but almost everyone has a different choice. So give them a try and take your time cutting. One hint from me, don't try to make your blades last forever. A dull blade can easily destroy an hours work. Change your blade when you discover that all of a sudden you seem to be needing to push your blade to make a cut. the blade should cut fairly easily through the wood. Dick heppnerguy

Paul. Pattern making is something I have been interested in from the time I started scrolling but for some unknown reason I just do not have the imagination to see a pattern ' to be made' when it is right in front of me. Everything can be a possible pattern, I believe but yet the same problem haunts me. I guess I just need to get off my duff and make a little effort there. Dick

I just saw you post today and I too wish to chime in with the others and say, a very nice piece here. I wish I would take the time to learn to make the portrait patterns as this is what i really want to do most in scrolling.. you have done a fabulous job on these Dick heppnerguy

As some of you saw, I put in a request for a really difficult pattern, in the 'pattern request' forum. Mahendra, a friend of ours in India, was able to make a very nice pattern for me, so I went out to my shop to cut it. I was very excited about it as the pattern is of the first mass produced, gasoline powered, gasoline farm tractor. My wife's great grandfather was the person who financed a company and started the production of this tractor. I am in the process of writing a booklet for our family members about the man and the tractor. So here is my effort on cutting the pattern. i have to say that I am not very happy with the results but I will cut another in the near future. I can not thank Mahendra enough for making and posting the pattern for me. I still need to make my backer board and do the finish work on it. I decided to do that much even though I am not happy with my cutting of it, as it did take me quite a bit of time to cut. Dick heppnerguy

the problem that i see with Jerry's fix, is the thumb screw has an end that pivots and helps keep the thumb screw aligned with the blade as it travels up and down. I keeps pressure off the blade, or something like that, (not sure how to explain it ). I am not sure how changing the thumbscrew would effect the cutting or the blade. Others understand this way better than I do but I thought i would throw that out and see what other comments come up Dick heppnerguy
