Ray, I suppect this is a hard one to answer. Simply, in my opinion depends on what feels comfortable for you. I have tried several configurations and heights and think I am finally very comfortable with what I have. I did not like the metal stand that came with my saw so I build mine using a part of an old kitchen cabinet someone discarded. I originally made it with a slanted top, as you have but have since made it level, just more comfortable for me. I do not think there is a forumla, it is trial and error. Even more so than when working on a wood lathe.

This is a Charles Dearing pattern, 1/4" BB, 16" x 11". I used 3/0 FD Spiral blade. This one got pretty scary at times. But I enjoyed scrolling it.

What kind of a bit are you using to drill the hole? A brad point or forstner bit would is what I would use for that.

I have, been even afraid to try. When I made pens I was working for a flower shop delivering flowers, a great parttime retirement job, I showed the people I worked with some pens I had made. They wanted me to set up a display at the shop counter and they would sell them for me,,,,, until I would have to get $50 each for a pen to pay for cost and time... They were figuring $10 range,,, People in my area just are not willing to pay what it will cost.

Man, wish I had the time to join you guys in the build. I've been wanting to try something other than the pictures I have been scrolling so far. I have been eyeing this Ferris Wheel: http://www.finescrollsaw.com/ferris-wheel.htm But I bought the plans for the "Five Dragon Box'' instead. Maybe if I can do the box, I will try the Ferris Wheel. Good luck guys, I'm really anxious to see the end products.

You are correct, it "sucks" at times. I have a straight pointed metal tool, I don't know what if supposed to be used for or where I got it, I just found it in my tools one day. I can clear holes and round the edge of them over with it. I keep it on a magnet I have attached to my scroll saw cabinet. There are dental tools that would work good for this. This may be a dental tool. I have a small brush for sweeping the sawdust off the bottom of the picture so I can see the holes better. Marking tough to find holes with a pencil or marker helps. I have a light I can attach to my table top to shine light on the bottom of the picture when needed. I also start drilling holes with a 1/16" drill bit and drill all the holes I can with it. I only use a smaller bit in the areas that a 1/16" bit is too large. II think the drilling 10 - 20 holes at a time might be a good idea, I have not tried that. Standing on your head might also help at times..... But even with all this I still find it easier, for me, than top feeding. This is my setup. .

You have been much busier them me at the scrolling. Some mighty fine cutting, Steve, although you cheated is some on the size pictures of the prospector and the cabin.

Just finished scrolling this one. Charles Dearing pattern, 1/4"B.B. 16"x 10.5". I used 3/0 New Spiral Blades.

I've never seen any spiral blades with pins,,,, so I'm good to go.
