  1. Thank you all for the very nice responses. They are what makes me want to keep trying. Dick, I may not try the Eiffel Tower, but I have been looking at clock patterns with all that fret work. I would like to try one of those one of these days. Danny, I didn't keep track of the time spent on this one because it was all short spirts on breaks from hanging drywall in my basement. I would guess it was aroung 20 hours though,
  2. Steve, I've noticed that as you avatar some time ago and tried to search to see if you had posted it with a bigger picture to look at. That is a beautiful scene and you did a great job on it. Mind if I ask where you got the pattern, I love that scene. Also what type of blades do you use? Very, very nice scrolling. Thank you for sharing it.

This is another Charles Dearing pattern. 1/8" BB stacked 3 pieces. FD 3/0 spiral blades.
  4. I've had the DeWalt and now have the Ex 21. I love my Ex but I'm really not sure it is $400 worth better. I had no problems with the DeWalt while I had it. Although I have already used my Excalibur more in the few months I've had it than I did the DeWalt which I had for many years. I do like the tension lever on the Ex better and the upper arm raises a couple inches higher than the DeWalt did. It is a little quieter and a little less vibration.
  5. Nice work by you and your Granddaughter.
  6. Looks good to me. I haven't even had the nerve to try one!
  7. Both are great! Just about any color would look good behind those.
  8. I do portraits so far and use 1/8" Baltic Birch. The birch plywood you buy at stores like Home Depot and Lowes, is not of the same quality and can contain voids. Most good lumber stores in my area carry Baltic Birch in 5ft. x 5ft sheets. That is how I buy it. But that way you also have to have a way to cut it into smaller pieces. You can get it in 1' x 1' pieces from the online stores mentioned here. I have a nephew and a brother that are always on the look out for wood for me. They bring me old furniture and things that they think I may be able to use. I got some real nice mahogany boards from some pieces my nephew brought me a while back. I've also been known to go "dumpster diving", (I ain't proud, ) and I would go to the garbage dumps if they would let me. Old door skins will work for practice if you can get some. I got some at our local Habitat For Humanity store for $2 each a while back.
  9. Great "re-start". But watch out you daughter will love it and demand more! I did my first scrolling on an old scroll saw my Dad had in the garage when I was a kid. He pretty much let us kids use all his tools except the table saw. I thank him for it, it is wear I got the foundation for my love of wood working.
  10. Dick, had I done that you can bet I would be bragging. I really like it. I epically like the little fish in the upper right corner, swimming through the ripples in the wood caused by the knot. Looks like it is swimming sun rays shinning through ripples in the water. I think your grand son will love that and be very proud of his Grandpa.
  11. I'm a big FD fan, the only blades I use now. I really think the spirals are worth giving a try to also. A FD New Spiral 3/0 is my main blade now. You can email Mike and he will probably send you a couple to try for free. Or give him a call. Tell him about your saw, what type of cutting you want to do and he will recommend what to try. He also has a nice assorted pack you can purchase and try out several types of blades. Do I sound like a Mike fan, well I am, he sell a great produce, gives great service and from the dealings I have had with him and the phone conversations I think he is a great person.
  12. I checked the allen screws and was very surprised how easily they move so yes I went to the store and picked up some blue Permatex to put on the threads. Cleaned the srews up and also the thumb screws and maybe that will fix my problem. So far so good. I also ordered some new screws to have on hand. Thanks again all for your help.
  13. Thanks for the replies everyone. I will do some work on the clamps and see what happens.
  14. Nice, great idea. Well done.
  15. Very inventive and beautiful work!
  16. I use and love the FD New Spiral 3/0 blade. It is my favorite blade, but, lately I have been having a problem with them. When I put a new blade in, at least 50% of the time when I tighten the blade the bottom or top will bend and crimp. That means throw it away because it will break off as soon as I start the saw. I think it has something to do with the twist at the end. When I first started using them I didn't seem to have any problem. I checked the alignment and the blade is 90' to the table. This is the second batch of these blades, no problem with the first dozen or so I purchased. Any suggestions.
  17. Darn, Dick, that made me just go order that pattern. I live in the heart of a big wine area in Washington, I'm sure I can find someone that likes it, if I can do anywhere near as nice a job as you did.
  18. Welcome to the forum from the not so pretty, but the dry side of the WA.
  19. Very nice work, Dick.
  20. Well done!
  21. Mine went for $250 without a stand. The stand I had would have been an extra $35. He had a cabinet to mount it on. Mine did have a riser on it and I gave him all the blades I had that were not Flying Dutchman.
  22. Well mine's gone. First person to look at it took it no questions. I had to ask if he wanted to hear it run. By th way, I said in my other post I was asking $225. Actually it was $250 and that is what he gave me.
  23. Courier would not cost me anything... It would cost whomever it was sent to . I won't take $175, I will keep it as a backup if I don't get what I am asking.
  24. My guess is the gadget is the base for a light hat has a flexible arm. Penless blades are very common, actually the most used now days. I have picked them up at Home Depot. Better ones can be purchased online, like from Mike's Workshop.
  25. I have one for sale on Graigslist right now, I'm asking $225. W/O stand. I have the stand that came with my EX and I'm offering it for an additional $35, The DeWalt can easily be mounted on it. I'll see how I do. Only have one interested person so far. I have to get back to him. I think some of it depends on where you live also. Around here there are not many scrollers. $350 seems pretty high to me for a used DeWalt especially without stand. P.S. Mine looks a lot better than that one:
