  1. Mrs.N ( Katie ) summed it up really good. The only thing different I did was seal the ends of the boards ( planks ) with anchor seal. This decreases the checking ( splitting ) on the ends. Use "stickers" of the same type of wood to prevent discoloration. Example would be if you are drying Maple and stickers are cherry it will stain the Maple. Have fun, learn lots and enjoy the end product.
  2. Thanks for the kind words. And your very welcome.
  3. Thinking about this today. Played with it in inkscape for a bit. It is doable, I would suggest 1/4" hardwood for cut and 1/4" hardwood for a backer. There will lots of weak areas but it can be done. Here is a rough copy of the play time.
  4. Travis I'll look for you next Sunday. This one is dedicated to the family with Easter being here. Have fun and enjoy
  5. Table saws are a great tool to have. Just be very careful as they can bite with a vengeance. Safety is a very high priority on them.
  6. Looks good, congrats on your first one.
  7. Nice clean display. Nice work too. Hope you did well.
  8. Never double tapped my foot pedal. I'll try tomorrow and see if it does the same thing, just out of shear curiosity. I know the Ex's and 788's share a lot in common with features. This should be interesting. I have both pedals, the one that came with my Ex and the one I used before purchasing it.
  9. Looks like some clean up work is in need. Good find for you Kevin.
  10. Kevin My EX-21 does the same thing. If it won't go all the way up, I press the foot pedal and then it goes. Thinking something to do with the linkage and motor.
  11. Alex First congrats on getting into scrolling. Sorry to hear your in a pickle though. Congrats on the upcoming birth, such a blessing. The best I can offer is to practice with you have for now. The learning curve will really aid in your next saved up for purchase. You'll learn the basics and then some going this route and it won't be too expensive. Basically paper and ink and some form of adhesive to attach the pattern. Lots of great threads here on starting out, check them out. Best of everything on you new adventures. First the baby second scrolling
  12. Scrappile Thanks for the link. He has some really great patterns there. Food for thought for sure.
  13. Stack cutting 1/8" ply I go up to 5 layers. Using a 3/0 spiral I would stay 2 or 3 layers.
  14. Gonzo I have had mine for a couple months now. Have not had any real problems with it. Give them a chance to fix it and see what happens. Keep us posted on this please.
  15. I would try to slow down your feed speed quite a bit. Make sure you are at dead on 90 degrees too. When pushing very hard wood past a scroll saw blade they will tend to wander a bit. I take a diamond file and gently clean up the back of the blades to remove any burr left from the manufacturing process. Clear packing tape over the pattern is a must for lubrication also. Not sure how much help this will be, but these are the basic things I always check or do when using a very hard wood.
  16. Congrats on the new saw. I love mine. You should get many long happy years from it.
  17. NC Scroller hit my first thought. Some form of dust collection. Second thoughts were eye and hearing protection. Something I rarely see mentioned is a fire extinguisher also. Just a few things off the top of my head.
  18. I have met a few people from another forum. It was great. I'm sure you guys will have a great time. And remeber, great things come from small places
  19. I have the EX-21 and I love it. I do a lot of fret work as well as other forms of scrolling. If you are going to make larger projects, I would suggest the 21. If you are staying with smaller item the 16 will do fine. Some of my work is 24 inches long, so depth is needed. Choice by the work you plan to do. The 21 will also give you room if you choose larger cuttings. But the choice is yours and according to your true budget. Keep us posted on your choice.
  20. I have used masking tape, but if the outside is going to be part of the cutting I switch to blue painters tape because of the glue issue. I have heard so many times about hot glue, I may have to try it.
  21. Anytime I use purple heart it is used as an accent. Like stated before, hard, dense and burns easily. As for a project, Try a small box of Maple and use the purple heart to accent it. The colors together look really great once finished. I have also used it in a frame the same way, same outstanding results. Take your time cutting it and follow the other tips above.
  22. I have a 3m I use when needed. Tried those cheap paper ones and tossed them quick. The 3m is comfortable and doesn't restrict anything. I wear glasses ( cheaters ) and it don't bother them.
  23. I attach felt to the backer board then glue the art to it. Once in the frame everything stays safe and put.
  24. Welcome to the village Charlie.
  25. Kevin has a good thought. The only problem then is the depth of the throat of your saw. I try to place me entry holes in a fashion so that I can make my cuts using a straight blade. Not a huge fan of spirals but use them when no other choice is available.
