  1. Wow! In my neck of the woods, that would sell for about $600 - IF you can find one.
  2. Somebody built a Hawk knock-off? Looks like a single speed and only 14" so I would certainly pass on it.

I am continually amazed that you can do that! I can't think of another word for in but amazing!! Well done!
  4. My family looks forward to camping trips to see what kind of interesting designer firewood I bring. Watching your mistakes go up is smoke is kind of therapeutic.
  5. 15P?? Kevin, its time to move into the basement! I complain when its 62F in my basement and am trying to work.
  6. Thanks all, that is what I was thinking. The Limited Edition has a nice black paint job that is really cool looking, but I try to watch what the blade is doing when I cut. LOL
  7. For the Excalibur experts out there, how much do you think an Excalibur Limited Production Anniversary is worth? Would you go as high as $500 for a pristine, hardly used one?
  8. In one of the Bushton videos, there is an off hand mention that they had connection issues with the controller to motor on the VS and fixed it on the BM series by hard wiring them instead of using connectors. Not sure what that means exactly, but might be something to explore. Back is the day, when more things used variable resistors (pots) we used a product call Tuner Wash, kind of an electronic contact cleaner. If you google tuner cleaner or check Amazon there are a bunch of brands that may fix your speed control. Of course this stuff cost more than the part, but you would not have to remove and un-solder it
  9. Under the heat sink (lower right corner of the first pix) will be one (Probably a voltage regulator) I would suspect. I see an LM2907 chip that is a common one. Can't see what the other chip is. Other than that, all the caps and resistors might be problems but I doubt it. Look for bad solder joints and look at the crimps on the wire connectors. It not a very complex board, but without a circuit drawing we are kind of blind.
  10. After examining the machine, it did indeed have the dreaded Fasco motor. Considering all I have learned in previous discussions here and with Bushton, and even though they reduced the price to $375, I have decided to walk away. Too bad, because the machine was in almost pristine condition. I could not see any signs of wear.
  11. For your sake, I how she things that's as funny as I do!
  12. I was in a grocery store (waiting for my wife) and started looking mags. It was that or sort the apples and oranges but the clerks get mad at me when I do. I picked up a copy of Scroll Saw Woodworking, wondering what it was. Looking through it, I thought some of the items were really cool (some not so much). Bought new Craftsman SS, and it broke in the first 4 months. Found a used Dewalt 788 type ! on CL and here we are......... I have always appreciated woodworking but seem to have no skill for most of it. My kids have actually laughed at my efforts to build things like benches and bookshelves. Now I have found my niche.
  13. That what I was told also.
  14. FYI, If you google, Fasco they are still in business!??!?!?! Not sure what to make of that.
  15. I agree with Kev. Based on what Bushton told me, it is actually the "computer speed control" that goes bad and burns out the motor. As the control goes bad, the motor gets too much current (and runs really fast as a symptom) and the excess current kills the motor. Based on their statements, I think the control COULD be repaired. Since these were made in the 80' and 90's "computer control" is not what most would call a computer today. It is likely NOT a processor chip, but a bunch of discrete components. Motor control circuits are not that complex and should be repairable by a skill electronic technician. In this day and age good like finding one of those.
  16. And of course, after I posted this I did get through on the phone. Good news: great customer server, answered all my questions. Super people to work with! Bad news: It probably has the dreaded Fasco motor. It will say the mfg on the motor label. From what Bushton says, these are failing often and they seem to think most of them will eventually. Replacement kit is estimate to be $400.00. Ouch! They did say someone had one of the bad motors repaired locally at a lower cost. So its off to look at this machine, to check it out.
  17. I have been try to contact Bushton for two day. No reply to several emails and I always get a busy signal when I call. Planting time in Kansas??
  18. I don't know about crossing the lake - I think the ice is melting. And I avoid that city to the south of me.
  19. found this Hawk for $450. Thoughts?
  20. One thing I have learned, if you are having problems with your doctor, it time to move on. I have replaced more than one that was not listening or had their own agenda. We are paying WAY to much for that nonsense. If possible, find the top guy in your area. For example, my cardiologist is also the professor at the medical college in this part of the state. Funny story (now, not then) my wife was having problems with her breathing, not related to her asthma. Her GP looked at her and said her problem was she had wax in her ears! Next day she went to her asthma specialist, and he informed her she had pneumonia. Time to fire the GP and get a new one.
  21. Well, didn't I open a can of worms. What do the guys that do router signs use for wood and finish?
  22. I have an custom order for an outdoor sign. I know enough to finish it with spar varnish. Would Oak stand up to the weather better than pine? I know that cedar is the ultimate, but I am very allergic to the stuff. Any other thought or suggestions are most welcome.
  23. I do all my work in the basement (garage in not insulated and this is February in Wisconsin). In the summer I use rattle cans and spray in the garage, but at 20F right now thats not going to work. So my question is how do I set up a spray booth in the basement (without sending me and/or the wife to the hospital from the fumes). With a natural gas furnace and how water heater, I don't want to burn the place down either. One last hurtle, I live in a condo development, so a separate building is out.
  24. There is someone trying to sell a Hawk 220-VS for $600 on Chicago's CL. It has been listed for a long, long time.
  25. Hmm, the rest of us can cut totally straight lines - NOT! You can get better with practice and follow the advice given above, but if your looking for straight lines like a table saw, you have the wrong tool. What you think is not straight, may look just fine to someone else. Relax and have fun!
