  1. Well done! Jim
  2. I agree, block lettering will keep you humble! Script is easier, abstract lines even easier. My first projects we butterflies last year. Came out pretty good, I though. Then I tried a sign with block letters - ouch! Can you say "designer firewood"? one thing I learned is to cut thicker wood. If you are only cutting 1/4", stack cut or use a backer. It is easier to control.
  3. OK dumb question, but where can I get that pattern? Jim
  4. Great cutting. Great pattern. Jim
  5. Looks great to me. Well done Kevin. Jim
  6. Update 4/11/15 My friend/customer really like it. She showed it to her Bible study friends, so now I have orders for 2 more just like it. This is one where my cutting ability is secondary and the beauty of the wood makes all the difference. I need to come up with a price, so please send me your thoughts Jim
  7. That why I built my own stand from 2x4s and 2x6s. Then I used some scrap wood for a top and made the stand into a stand for my e-cheap drill-press.
  8. I got a type 1 Dewalt of off Craigslist last summer. Did some tweeks to tune it and cleaned it. got to wondering how old is this? It came with a tube steel stand. Anyone know if Dewalt keeps that kind of records? Jim
  9. Thanks everyone. I have a bunch of things to try. Since my saw is a Dewalt that I have cleaned and have a fresh coat of Johnson' paste wax, that leaves out the aluminum table. Jim
  10. Every time I cut oak on my saw I get black smudges next to the cut line. They come off with a fair amount of sanding, but are a pain, Other light colored woods like aspen don't have this problem. The pictures make it look like it is part of the grain, but it is not. Any advice would be most helpful. Jim
  11. I was asked to do a center piece for a friends dining room table. A cross with the words “ Jesus is Lord†on it. The words needed to be readable on the front and the back. So I am at my wood supply store (Kettle Moraine Hardwoods in Hartford Wis.) looking for what kind of wood to use. My plan was some mix of Oak and Walnut. Then I saw the exotic woods section. Found Zebrawood and really liked the look. Now I'm cheapskate and think oak and walnut is priced to high. Zebrawood is even higher. Bought a slab of 1+ inches think and cut the cross and base. Cut the words out of Aspen. Finished with BLO and topped with gloss poly. Jim
  12. Thanks for all your kind words. I really need to learn Inkscape and Gimp to make real patterns. So much to do and learn! Jim
  13. I made one of the patterns in Jeff Paxton's book "words of Faith." A pastor friend saw it and asked me to do something like it with different words. Hmm, never did anything without a ready made pattern before. So, I figured out how to install a scroll friendly font on my computer and played around with it. I don't consider it a "real" pattern design, more of a layout. Anyway, delivered it today and they were happy with it. Jim
  14. Thanks everyone for the help. That's what I love about this place - good info from good people. Helps me not feel like a lone ranger. Since it is only a 14" and would need the upgraded clamps, I am going to wait. Jim
  15. But why would you want a slot in table? That's the opposite of a zero clearance insert. Seems wrong to me.
  16. I have found a Hegner 14" Mulimax on Craigslist for $300. The description say it has a slotted table. Why a slot? Good of bad? Jim
  17. Looks good to my old eyes. LOL
  18. Thanks. but I will have to pass this time. let me know of any future displays you have.
  19. OK, so I "borrowed" it from my wife and took it to work. I now have orders for 3 more. I am asking $40 each - any thoughts if that is too much or not enough? Price is always a tough one for me. thanks, Jim
  20. I just voted. Hope it's not too late. Jim Jackson, Wi.
  21. Thanks everyone for proving to me that I an NOT cheap like my wife says. LOL. Jim
  22. Painters tape top side only. I have tried top and bottom and didn't like it - it folded over and stuck to the saw table. I couldn't figure out what was wrong bad blade or what.
  23. This may be a silly question but - the container for BLO says to mix it with mineral spirits, but mix only enough for each use. I cheap and hate to get rid of it. I am mixing it and dipping small pieces. Why can't I put it in a new sealed container and re-use the leftovers? Thanks, Jim
  24. well done!!! Very impressive! Jim
  25. Hi Kevin, The plans are off of Steve Good's site. Look for mini-clock designs by Larry Hamm. Jim
