  1. here are a few birds I've cut over the years
  2. I sell "words" for $15-20 per. I normally can cut & finish 3-4 per hour. Good money by the hour but i normally just sell my intarsia pieces which care a higher price because of the time those take.
  3. I've cut several "words" over the years and they sale quite well. Because they are a really quick cut and fairly easy to apply a finish, I sell them on the lower end price scale. Brian
  4. wonderful article
  5. correct Richard is great to deal with and he know more about wood than I care to know. If you get what I'm saying. He loves to talk
  6. Look up Richard's Craft Woods on the internet. This is where I buy all my thin stock from. His website may not be much to look at but he has high quality thin stock. He ships all over the US. I'm may be lucky since this shop is about a 10 minute drive from the house. Actually unlucky because every time I go out there I spend a ton of money.
  7. I normally demo at the Klingspor Wood Expo as well but with the Carolina Scrollers. We received a club update the other night on the show this year. Klingspor will be doing something this fall but they are not sure what. It will either be at the Hickory Convention center as in years past or it could be at the Hickory NC Store & plant location or they could do something at each of their store locations. They will make a decision in early June from what we were told. Everything will depend on Covid restrictions. I don't think their virtual show went over very well last year. When I get more updates on what they are doing I'll let you know.
  8. Here are some of the big cats I've done over the years
  9. I don't think this will leak or sink. the epoxy will waterproof everything. This thing is so light as well. it will be around 40 pounds when done. Brian
  10. 1 layer of glass on the deck and the entire interior of the kayak. 2 layers on the hull. Currently there is 1 layer and I'll add the second layer once I join the 2 halves together. Interior fiberglass & epoxy work is complete on the underside of the deck as well as end pours at the bow & stern.
  11. coming along slowing here are some more photos- everything stained and started Fiberglass & epoxy work since the last time I posted. On track to finish sometime in late Feb, 2021.
  12. Thought I would let everyone know I'm still around even though I haven't touch the scrollsaw in relation to doing Intarsia since April of this year. I posted awhile back that I had decided to build a wooden Kayak. Thought I would share a few updated photos. the majority of the woodworking is done and now I'm down to working with the epoxy & Fiberglass. I just finished sealing the inlay and accent strips and it is ready to be stained. Once it is stained I will be adding the layers of epoxy & glass to waterproof it.
  13. Inlay is completed and installed in the deck between the cockpit area and the bow
  14. Thought I would share a couple of photos of my current project. I'm doing a compass rose as an inlay. The Compass rose has 145 pieces and when completed it will be about 12" in diameter. It is being made out of 3/8" material. Once done and a final sand is completed it should be right at 3/16" thick. The hardest part with this inlay is that it is not only round but I have to make it so it will curve around to match the shape of the deck of the wooden stripped kayak that I'm building. I started the inlay about a week or so ago and have another day or so on it. Kayak was started 6 weeks ago. I am not only using the scroll saw for the inlay but used it to cut all the forms for the kayak. I'll be using the scroll saw for the paddles & seat lamination as well Woods in Inlay are cherry, walnut, mahogany, sycamore, yellow heart. There are also 3 different maples as well- soft curly, hard & spalted Woods for Kayak are Cypress with maple & mahogany accent strips.
  15. no i had a set of plans by Nick Schade to build the forms from. Any added details like the accent strips are by choice and my design.
  16. I haven't been on the forum for awhile and thought I would check in. I have decided that i was getting burned out doing intarsia. It started feeling too much like a second job and not a hobby. I had made the decision to step back from intarsia earlier in the year and try something way of of the box in my shop. A few weeks ago I was finally able to start on my next big project. I had built a wooden boat almost 35 years ago and had always wanted to do it again so i decided it was time. I'm building a 17 & half foot long double "cedar" stripped Kayak. I could not fine any clear western red cedar for the build that was long enough so I ended up using cypress instead. I'm adding maple & mahogany accent strips in a few locations. I'm considering adding an inlay to the deck as well. I have already added the accent line at the designed waterline. The project will most likely take several months to complete. It has been nice that I have had something big to work on sense the stay at home orders were issued in NC. Been staying in my safe place. Here are a couple of progress photos that were taken yesterday.
  17. Thought i would let everyone now he has arrived. Late last year I had posted a crib, high chair and a rocking elephant that I had made for our future grand son. Well he is no longer a future grand son. My daughter gave birth this past Wednesday during this trying time as the COVID-19 spreads across the county. My daughter thought it would be cute to memorialize his arrival with the attached photo as we are social distancing for the next several weeks. I thought this would bring a smile to everyone. Now I guess I can go back to the shop and start making this sense my work is basically shut down all my work projects
  18. plastic totes with bubble wrap &/or towels between each layer. Works great and have never broken or scratched anything.
  19. yes they should
  20. I bought the wonder wheel when I 1st started and did not care for it. I have better control by using my power carver and a cutoff wheel that way I can see what I'm doing. it is just easier for me
  21. because my intarsia pieces seldom fit into priority boxes, I ship UPS ground and have never had an issue with breakage. I charge a flat rate of $30 to ship in the US. UPS ground runs me $15-$18 plus the box and packing material. Because I cant find boxes for odd sizes that I need I end up customizing existing boxes and wrap the piece with bubble wrap and fill the remaining spaces with peanuts. I break even on the shipping cost. I shipped stuff up & down the east coast and 1/2 across the US. Brian
  22. I also use a Foredum power carver with a small 3/8" drum stand attachment to get the small areas as well as a pear shaped carving bur
  23. thanks for the comments
  24. i want the grain to show through on the poplar. i use general finishes pre-mixed dyes.
  25. 1st piece for 2020 finished this weekend. The King of the Jungle designed by Kathy Wise. Woods are sycamore, spalted sycamore, walnut, Peruvian walnut, Sapele, Birdseye Maple and Peru Amarillo
