What a fantastic piece. That's right up my alley and your cutting is beautiful. I am not an expert on finishing. Usually I dip my pieces in 50/50 BLO and turpentine but sometimes find the wood absorbs more through the end grain and end up with a result I don't like. Whatever you decide, experiment on scrap offcuts first.

Great work as always Dave. It looks so fragile in places and yet the inner circle round the initial is so well cut it is perfectly round. Very well done.

Thanks Ralph,
The sides are 5/16ths so not too bad to stack cut. 50/50 BLO changes the colour dramatically. Here is a picture of it on the saw for comparison. You wouldn't think it was the same piece!

Thanks Jeff,
I'm lucky to be able to find bits of rimu at the dump fairly regularly but there's lots we can't get here, like Baltic Birch ply and our DIY stores only carry pine generally. The choice you guys have is amazing!

Fretwork tray designed by Steve Good cut from some rimu tongue and groove from the back of an old wardrobe and a piece of drawer side for the base. One coat of 50/50 BLO and mineral turpentine. I will give it a coat of beeswax once it is fully dry. This was fun to cut and I was able to stack cut the sides and ends which saved time.
