What size baltic birch plywood if framing.

As a custom framer, 1/4" plywood is fine. Most rabbits are at least 3/8" deep. I use 1/8" for the backer and no glass. -
When you look at the example in the magazine, Paul used quarter sawn Sycamore. It looks like the grain is vertical. That must have been a wide board!

Thanks all for the nice comments. Dave, this project was dipped. I have an old 9" pie tin and it works great for projects like this one. Kevin, this project was 1/2" Ash, so fairly easy to cut.

Choice of blades as stated is a matter of preference. Try different blades and different manufacturers. You will soon find somethin you are comfortable with. One suggestion, do not by blades from a big box store.

Thanks, Steve, the grain of the Ash really shows. Cliff, BLO stands for Boiled Linseed Oil. I use it with Mineral Spirits at 50%.

This project was finished on Monday, June 27th. The pattern is by Sheila Landry and purchased from her website. I used 1/2" Ash with nice grain. The blade used was FD UR #3. One coat of 50% BLO and one coat of spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

I finished this on the weekend. The pattern is by Paul Boer and found in CWWC August 2011. I used 1/2" Mahogany for the upright and I thought 3/4" Walnut for the base. After applying 50% BLO, the base came out very red. It must be Bloodwood. I used FD UR #3 for most of the cuts and FD UR #5 for the veining and exterior. Finished with one coat of 50% BLO and one coat spray Shellac. Comments welcome.

I don't remember what got me started. I bought a Hitachi from Lowe's and returned it within a week. The bought a DeWalt online. My first project was a Christmas ornament. It is still hanging above the bench. What a difference practice, practice, and practice makes.
